I passed my test on the 3rd go too, and im a petrolhead! :D pdrnsf 27-04-2005, 13:31 Well done! Best checking out pass plus to see how much is would lower your insurance, my instructor said it hardly ever makes a differance, that was three years ago though. look on tesco website, they have got an offer on of 10% off online at the moment. it couldnt find our address on their system though, so i rang up and they said that they would still honour the 10% online deal over the phone. ive been driving for almost 3 years and ive just bought my first car, shared with my partner-keeps costs down!! and im well excited! shame insurance was £935 for a clio! and not to mention my excess-£600! so please everyone, leave me alone when im out on the roads of sheff! Whoever had that meeting with dawny 1-please dont come and find me!! Hope things going ok by the way dawny1. sparklesista 27-04-2005, 13:36  Congratulations! I passed first time a week after my 17 birthday and have been driving for 3 years now. It only really makes a difference to the insurance companies who charge you loads anyway. I done loads of quotes for myself and it wasnt worth it whatsoever. Saxon 04-05-2005, 19:48 But the main idea behind Pass Plus is NOT to get you cheaper insurance (although that is obviously an incentive) but to try and give a very inexperienced driver a bit more confidence and experience of different roads and traffic conditions than they perhaps experienced when learning. Its so surprising for new drivers, and a real eye-opener, when you take them out without the L plates on and let them see just how it is in the real world, rather than 'hiding' behind the L plates. At the end of the day, all you prove by passing the driving test is that you can drive to a reasonably competent level for about 35-40 minutes. Pass plus gives valuable extra experience. (Or are you an expert as soon as you pass?) sparklesista 04-05-2005, 19:51 I did my Pass Plus and my Diamond Advanced Motorist Test. It does help even if it doesn't get you much money off your insurance. I've been driving since I was 12 - mainly ragging old cars around fields (I grew up near a lot of farms) and got experience from that. It's not your driving you have to watch out, it's other people's! spyro2000 04-05-2005, 19:52 Originally posted by Saxon But the main idea behind Pass Plus is NOT to get you cheaper insurance (although that is obviously an incentive) but to try and give a very inexperienced driver a bit more confidence and experience of different roads and traffic conditions than they perhaps experienced when learning. (Or are you an expert as soon as you pass?) Yes but thats coming from someone who teaches pass plus and who benefits from students paying for pass plus. passing pass plus just means you have the ability to do 6 different types of driving for an instructor so that he can tick you off on his sheet to say its been done As a real life person I find that the best way to learn is to get on the road for yourself and make your own mistakes, while obviously taking it careful and not being over confident. If this cant be done then it would be better to be in the car with an experienced driver (someone who isnt an instructor), so you get use to being on the road as your own person. sparklesista 04-05-2005, 19:52 I may do this too http://www.driverskills.com/ :) spyro2000 04-05-2005, 19:55 Originally posted by sparklesista I may do this too http://www.driverskills.com/ :) Now that would be a lot better than doing pass plus. You will learn things like how to handle skids, the car going out of control etc. sparklesista 04-05-2005, 19:57 Originally posted by spyro2000 Now that would be a lot better than doing pass plus. You will learn things like how to handle skids, the car going out of control etc. Yeah, I used to practise in empty car parks at nights using traffic cones. It's a great way to get used to having to slam your breaks on or dodging out of the way etc. Personally, I think the hardest thing to learn when you're driving is to drive slowly. That's a skill! It's sooo important though if you're driving on snow or ice in the winter! I lived out in the country side and the roads I used to drive down were barely wide enough for one vehicle but were meant for two! Passengers that lived in the city were terrified! Lol. |
