I got there at about 7:30 and there where scores of people walking in the same direction.

Twas a little confusing at first, nothing too taxing though.

A few signs would have been useful perhaps.

Was a good show all said and done.

My daughter also had free tickets she said they had to move if from the park because it was waterlogged. She also said it was an excellent show.

Does anyone know how long the circus is staying and how much the tickets cost?

We also went looking for the circus.
Found it though. we've booked for saturday- ring side .
I know ring side is expensive but we have to sit somewhere where my mum can stick her leg out as she cant bend her knee
and has a stick.
What a to do lol.
Anyway, last years circus was ok but the one the year before ,(Cottle and Austin) was the best one ive ever seen.
It was even better than the Blackpool tower one.

Prices for chinese state circus -Rear circle, Adults £10 concessions £7.00
Side circle, Adults £15 concessions £10.00
Grand stand ,£20 concessions £14.00
Ringside, £25 concessions £17.00.

But im sure most of you will have got the half price tickets available in most shops.
So obviously every ticket including concession ones are half price.

Why?

I don't agree with circuses with animals in, but this ones all people isn't it?

Oh thanks Tara for the price details :)

Rupertpupkin.
In case you havent heard. circus'es do not use animals anymore.
so why should they be banned.

It is very rare for a circus to use animals these days .
You might argue that there are one or two left that do, but I would never go to see them.
And ive never heard of a circus with animals come to sheffield for years.
This sort of thing is old hat now.

Any forum readers ever worked in a circus, or fairground?

Yes I have.
I worked as a clown for several years, first for Circus King, then Circus Fantasia and back to Circus King.
CK had animals, horses, dogs, elephants, llamas, lions and tigers. They were all well cared for from what I could see, but there is a constant stream of people who follow circus's around and accuse them of cruelty even when it isn't the case.
If I had had seen anything I disagreed with, I would have left immediately.
I felt the people were treated worse than the animals ever were. Basically if you weren't carny stock you were regarded as being nothing.
Although CF was a different story, very friendly, no animals, one big family pulling together. I met some amazing people out there and spent many nights under the influence of vodka with the Russian contortionist.
Happy days!

Bartman, the circus is on one side of Penistone Road, opposite the Football Ground - which is where you need to go to see some clowns.

Hi,
Firstly, sorry I know I've started a new thread - but I had doubts that it would be read on the end of the first one!

I'm going to the circus tomorrow with some friends for my birthday, can someone tell me exactly where the 'wasteland opposite the footie ground' is because I don't know Hillsborough very well - I'll also be driving so can anyone tell me where I can park when I get there please?

I take it they've not moved it back to the park?

Thanks sorry for my ignorance!

Went yesterday. I parked in a side street and at the bottom of Walkley and walked about a mile crossing the park, asking people where the circus is.

OK, you might not want to do that... the car park is on Langsett Rd (inside Hillsborough park on the South side of the footy ground) and the attendant will tell you the Big Top is on the other (North) side of the Wednesday ground, on the huge dual carriageway, 5 minutes walk.

You'll enjoy the show if you suspend our sad English upbringing for a bit (ignore the £3 hot dogs for heavens sake!) And why do people think they have to clap every time someone puts their hands in the air? ...Freaks!

The Shaolin wushu team are amazing. Watch the 'Chi raising' exercise up and down the abdomen and onto the head before each demo. You can almost feel it. If thats above you, the bendy girl was 'cool' and a better view from the cheap seats... hehe!

I especially liked the guys jumping through the hoops. It was annoying how everyone had to clap every 2 minutes though.

I clapped , its called appreciating good talent. I cant imagine the performers not wanting applause.
show was very good.

Not sure that a lot of the clapping (especially when it goes off every 5/6 seconds) isn't an automated reponse based on social conditioning to do with self gratification (in reverse) rather than genuine appreciation. Perhaps there's an element of insecurity there as well. Excessive TV, individualist education and general civic materialism are typically to blame for this behavioural symptom.

I found there was a certain subtle and even sublime quality to these particular performances, which deserves a more sophisticated appreciation of the skills at work.

Unfortunately the excessive clapping seemed to disperse the energy being created in the ring (and consequently the whole arena). But then again, many of the clientele are typical of 'English circus goers' (overweight, buying overpriced junk food, kids banging chairs up and down, etc.).

I expect a lot of the performers find this type of employment somewhat intimidating, coming from a "2000 year old tradition once reserved only for the Emporer and even today rarely seen outside China".

Interesting theory of yours , albeit rather stereotypical.

Yes we clapped to appreciate the talent , although not every 5-6 seconds. so does that make me and my family over weight junk eating chair banging typical circus clientele.
I think not.
This was a family show and i can only assume that without these families there wouldnt be any money made.

I must say though , considering there were three little kids sat directly behind me not one of them kicked my chair,
(As this usually happens at the movies and is nearly always an 18+ old that does this.)

All the kids seem to be well behaved and enthralled by the show.
Although i cant stand those coloured stick things that most kids seem to wave about and i wont let my lad have one.

But it must be said that at least these families actually take their kids out and dont leave them hanging around stret corners
like some, so i would think that was a plus, wouldn't you.?

I don't do theories Missis, with all due respect. I worked it out with my noggin at the time. Neither are my commments personal, they are an observation of social behaviour.

Given the circumstances of mixing the two cultural extremes I find the whole resulting scenario quite interesting...

cheers

Me, my boyfriend and Duffman went to see the show yesterday and must say that it was really good!

I think my favourite act was the contortionist, the tight rope walker and the hoop jumpers! :)

(I can't believe I split half my popcorn on the floor! :o)

I saw the show last Tuesday and have to say I was very impressed at the acrobatic ability.. I was a bit dissappointed at the admittedly understandable not being able to take any photos though..

Well, there were loads or people taking photo's when I was there. It's a bit silly not to permit it really as the increasing number of camera phone's means people can take photo's anyway.

Duffman actually brought his camera along and then forgot he had it on him until after the show!

I would of like to have taken my camera but it's rather large and there is no where to conceal it on my frame especially as it was hot and I wasn't wearing a coat!

Did anyone else go and get some snap shots of the show? :)
