I remember when I was first allowed to go into town on my own - cannot rememebr how old - mum gave me money to get some dinner and said to go to woolies on the moor.

Did I feel grown up getting my plate of chips and glass of orange squash in the self service ? - saved some cash to get a soft ice cream cornet from there as well - that always tasted wonderful.

Became a bit of a regular habit - as more friends joined me we all headed for the same place - the self service caff at Woolies - about teh only place we could get served

I'll never forget the time I saw a wedding party in Woolworths cafeteria.

Apart from it not really being the best place in Sheffield to hold a wedding reception there was a big argument when they reached the till about who was going to pay!!

I don't know whether this was in the late sixties or early seventies as i was born in 62 but i remember going to woolies with my bigger sister. We would spend our little bit of pocket money on bottles of nail varnish thinking we were so grown up and we would watch the woolies staff cooking doughnuts in the entrance as they had a fresh doughnut stand. I have some really happy memories of there.

I remember buying some unusual hair curlers in woolworths about 30 years ago, they looked like ordinary rollers but you dropped them in hot water, set your hair with them, they dried real fast, worked just like the modern -day electric rollers do now....never did find them again.

I thought woolies was wonderful when I was a kid. Full of toys, many affordable . But when I got older, I spent ages in there examining the make up. I remember buying white lipstick from woolies and black eye liner (both fashionable at the time). I remember the wooden floors, and the pick and mix sweets too. For a while I thought if one had fallen on the floor you could have it ... but someone burst that bubble.

There was a woman who used to live next door but one to us who worked on the cheese counter and she had the most miserable face you can imagine. Perhaps it was all that cheese!

I remember seeing a wedding party in the cafeteria of the old Woolworths store in Haymarket (oppposite the bottom of King Street). The best man stood next to the cashier and when everybody had picked up their food, then he paid the bill.

May be it was the second time around for the bride or groom you saw, and therefore, much better organized.

I remember the old Woolworths Cafeteria at the Haymarket. Late 50s early 60s on the top floor. It was massive, took up all the top floor, always busy. Good basic food, as I remember, especially their Shepherd's Pie. It was a real treat going there as a kid. Only thing was they were that effiecient you daren't put your cutlery down or they removed your plate. Still now we say 'it's like eating at Woollys' if waiters/waitresses are too keen to clear the table. Also, shopping in Woolworths, you had to have your purchase put in a bag or you could get stopped leaving the shop. I still ask for a bag in shops today because of that.

My memories of woolworths in the 60s are mainly of the hillsborogh branch as my grandparents lived in burrowlee road (opisite what was newbolds on penistone rd).

Looking back now it was incredible as you were served by assistants each counter had one complete with till.

I remember buying both batteries and light bulbs which were tested before they were wrapped.

I also remember them selling electric organs an oap used to go in and play them as a demonsration.

Around 1955 I worked at the Haymarket branch of Woolworths for a short while. At the back of each counter there was a wooden fold up seat. What it was there for I don"t know, because we were told off if we were caught sitting on it!

I remember buying some hair rollers from Woolworths in the late 60s, they were pink plastic, you dropped them in hot water and set your hair, amazing, they worked just like the modern electric ones do now, i went back the following year to get more, they were all gone off the shelves and never saw them again.

Woolworths in Sheffield Haymarket changed its name to Woolco.

Remember their donut machine? I used to go in town on my own in the very early 70s when I was about 10-12- hang around woolworths, wander through the markets -especially the rag n tag and always ended up at the pet store- I think it was Maces in the rag n tag before it moved to outside /nest to Castle Market.
The number of time I had to walk home to Gleadless Valley from town because I'd bought something from the pet shop - tadpoles, white mice, gerbils...I think my mum dreaded me going out.

Speaking of pet shops- ther was that exotic one on the Wicker that used to sell monkeys and pedigree dogs n cats...

Is it me or has Woolworths always had a very distinctive smell (the one on the moor) when you walk in. I can remember going there early on a Saturday morning in the 70's with my mum on her way to work (she used to clean at a nightclub around the corner - Scamps) and the smell I remember from back then is still the same now!!

I bought my first ever 7inch single from that Woolies on the Moor- Kate Bush 'Wuthering Heights' (and Richard Myhill 'It takes two to Tango' but we won't dwell on that...)
