View Full Version : Tired of the Gym?
49er_Jerry 08-08-2008, 09:58 British Military Fitness (http://www.britmilfit.com) (BMF) has finally made it to Sheffield.
I have been emailing them for the last few years, to request that they run classes in Sheffield. The classes are held at Graves Park, with parking at the Animal Farm car park.
If you are bored of going to the gym, want some really positive motivation, fun or are just intriqued, I can fully recommend you give it a go.
The first class is FREE, so you really don't have anything to loose. The classes are run at 7pm Tuesday and Thursday, and 10am on Saturday mornings.
Hey Jerry, do you do private classes?
Feline34 09-08-2008, 18:32 I can totally recommend these classes! I have been going 3 times a week for just 2 weeks now and I love it! Its hard, but you get so much encouragement and everyone is so friendly, that its fun! I would recommend it to anyone!
This looks Great!!!! Thanx for this jerry x

Are they all male instructors?
I think you can pay as you go but i thoght it was a bit pricey although i can`t remember how much
http://www.britmilfit.com/classes/pricing.aspx
cant see where it says pay as u go, appart from the first lesson is free ?
49er_Jerry 11-08-2008, 16:47 There is a bit section lower down the page. You can buy blocks of sessions. You buy sessions in advance, rather than pay at the session.
Hope that helps.
Crayfish 11-08-2008, 19:41 That looks good but seems quite expensive... how long is each class?
49er_Jerry 12-08-2008, 17:11 the classes last about an hour. A little bit longer, with the warm up and cool down. You do work hard during the hour though :|
BMF fanatic 15-08-2008, 13:33 I'm not convinced that the price is that expensive! You get just over an hour of challenging but fun physical activity. You also get an instructor which motivates YOU for the whole of the session. You can recieve this up to 12 classes per month at the moment which will probably double to 24 classes next year with NO EXTRA CHARGE if you have the unlimited classes membership at £32 per month. However it will only cost £28 if you qualify for a corporate rate discount. Council workers, NHS workers, any education institution and 100 other companies qualify for this discount. I think you get 'QUITE A LOT FOR YOUR MONEY'. Did I also mention you can get various discounts and the opportunity to take advantage of BMF's National and International challenges.
Cheaper than the GYM, Better than the GYM, More enjoyable than the GYM and you WILL get results!
themadrev 15-08-2008, 13:42 Looks like an expensive outside circuit class with someone shouting at you!
BMF fanatic 15-08-2008, 14:02 Looks like an expensive outside circuit class with someone shouting at you!
Which is why you think it is expensive! :-)
BMF provide so much more than a circuit... Circuits are ok... but usually repetitive. Same exercises, similar change overs with the same instructor etc.
BMF do individual exercises, partner exercises, team exercises, they MIGHT do a liitle bit of a circuit, but then again they might not! They do relays and novel military training exercises. For the more advanced groups they do quite a bit of running.
How many gym circuit training classes do you know of that can potentially cover the area of graves park. I do not know any!
How many Gym circuit training classes do you of that cover ALL of the activities mentioned above. I do not know of any!
Does a gym membership to circuits allow you to freeze your membership if you a) get injured, or b) if you are going away for more than a month with NO FINANCIAL CONCEQUENCES? I suspect not!
Does an average circuit training class give you discounts or special offers on selected products?
I'll stop there, but I could give a thousand more examples.
I'm boring myself now;I think you probably get my drift!
BMF is the way forward!

Looks very expensive to me when I can go to 4 different gyms use all their classes and the gym any time I fancy for £23 per month!? Better than the gym is rather a wild claim to make and as for more enjoyable than the gym thats rather a matter of personal choice.
Of course it wouldn't be that you have anything to do with running BMF and have just signed up to hype it would it :suspect:
iamthemoon 15-08-2008, 14:14 i think you could do just as much on your own. if yor the kind of person that needs someone shouting at you to motivate you to exercise, are you the right kind of person to go pay monthly gym sessions??
i do a lot of wht these guys do on my own. you just need a little bit of knowledge as regards to exercises and you are away.
as themadrev says....an expensive citcuit class with people shouting at you.
save money and go to the park

I take your point, it is a matter of personal choice. However, I have been in the fitness industry a long time and I genuinely believe it is an outstanding product. You only have to see how addictive it becomes, the friends that are sometimes forged and the diversity of people that attend to determine its value. There really is no discrimination on physical ability or pretencious attitudes. Everybody is really friendly which promotes a socially inclusive atmosphere which enables everybody to work towards their own personal goals with the help of the instructors and the support of their peers.
Joined so promote BMF? I'm a true Yorkshireman and proud of it! I came across this forum through another BMF member and these are the first threads I have posted. In time you will probably see me post on other topics oo. I like to debate and discuss things, so why not join a forum.
I can assure you that if I was just here to promote BMF, I would have done it a lot better, in a lot less time and with fewer words. I just genuinely believe in BMF and think it offers a unique opportunity to people on many levels.
bmf fantastic,

Good luck with it though pal.

I see where you are going with this and you are obviously entitled to your opinions!
One thing I would like to challenge is a potentially ignorant assumption that BMF instructors just SHOUT at people. Clearly their commands have to be loud in order for people to hear them, but I suspect you mean shouting in a traditional Army type fashion. If that is the case, you whole argument is weakened by your obvious lack of knowledge on what BMF does.
On the other hand I do have experience, and lots of it, in the physical training and gym environments. Automatically regardless of any thread content that makes my argument more credible than yours.
In terms of your comment, all you need is a little bit of knowledge.... well there is another potential flaw in your argument. What about the people who do not have a little bit of knowledge, what are they supposed to do? What about the people with a little bit of knowledge, why can't they benefit from somebody with MORE knowledge.
Guys, you arguments are valid in your opinion and mine are valid in mine. I take your points on board. Its not for everybody, but with the youngest member aged 16 and the oldest aged 63, and with couples, parents and children combinations and people from a wide range of demographics, this might suggest that it does appeal to a wide range of people
themadrev 15-08-2008, 15:23 As a 44 year old clergyman I recommend Craig's class - great variety of exercises; every week different and I'm sure he'd shout and curse at you as well...if that worked for you!
Noel
can you on the bible say you have ever heard me use foul language in a training session ?? Well can you huh :gag:
Craig.
themadrev 15-08-2008, 16:28 No, I was always too tired to hear anything! :D
Great class tonight, only 1 guy had to go outside to be sick
To be honest I don't know if BMF is expensive or not, but what price can you put on your fitness, it might be great I don't know, go try it out.
Craig.
This BMF things is expensive.
They are using Graves Park - are they paying Graves Park rent, are they fully insured? If they are not paying Graves Park any rent then they have very low overheads to cover.
Why a joining fee? It's a class, not a club. I hate joining fees anyway and in my experience it is just another way to extract money from you.
Lets not forget the weather - you may pay upfront but if it is chucking it down are you seriously going to turn up? Will they give you a refund if the weather is bad (probably not!)
These guys are in it for the money. It is a business, yes, and good luck to them. But personally I would go for a run and find a decent circuit class to go to once a week - somewhere where there is a toilet.
The oldest person who does it is 63? Your beastings can't be up to much.
Are these 'instructors' actually reg/TA PTIs in disguise? Because I've done that course and I could set up a fitness session for a hell of a lot less than that.

Firstly, I would like to respond by stating that if you think BMF is expensive, then that is you opinion. The only thing I would like to challenge is your negative attitude towards BMF when clearly you know nothing about it! You seem intent on trying to discredit it by asking , what I would consider, moronic questions such as 'are they insured' and do they pay Graves Park rent'. Would you go to David Lloyd and ask them is they have insurance to cover their members? Would you ask them if they are up to date with their mortgage payments or if they own their property? I suspect not. The only reason I can think of you asking these questions is to try and discredit BMFif they haven't. Well for your information they do not pay 'rent' to Graves Park, they PAY A LICENCE FEE TO THE COUNCIL. Clearly you just displayed your ignorance on this matter. BMF also have insurance cover for up to £5m. What kind of organisation do you think BMF is? Do you realise BMF has been running for 9 years and has nearly 60 venues nationwide?
Secondly, BMF is not just about classes and I would consider it to be a club. How many classes do you know that organise local social events, national and international challenges? How many classes do you know that organise skiing trips? How many classes do you know that do extra curricular activities such as climbing and camping. see facebook pages for BMF Liverpool if you think I'm making it up. As far as the joining fee is concerned, most people do not pay it as it can be waivered in most cases. If you are going to make moronic comments, I suggest you do you homework first!
Finally, what about the weather? Why would BMF give a refund due to bad weather? These are military themed fitness classes. The military don't just stop training when it is raining. Rugby players train in the rain, so do football players. The instructor are always there rain or shine and with their enthusiasm and skill and with the member's team spirit, the weather does not effect the challenging but fun classes.

Are these 'instructors' actually reg/TA PTIs in disguise? Because I've done that course and I could set up a fitness session for a hell of a lot less than that.
Oh dear!
Who even mentioned 'beastings'. That is exactly what BMFdon't do!
BMF do not beast ANYBODY! Why do you automatically associate military PT with a beasting? I would argue that this is a VERY NARROW MINDED VIEW.
BMFclasses are CHALLENGING for everybody, regardless of age and gender.
BMF also try to make their classes FUN and SOCIALLY INCLUSIVE.
A rubbish instructor can 'beast' anybody, but the talented instructor can modify his classes to ensure everybody is challenged and nobody feels like they are excluded because it is too easy or too hard.
PTI's in disguise? Ok, if you are running military PT classes, wouldn't it make more sense to have military PT instructors to do it? Actually, all BMF instructors have military experience and a recognised fitness qualification, but not all were/are PTIs. You mentioned Reg/TA, but you failed to recognise that BMF stands for British Military Fitness. If you did, then you ignorantly recognised the word Military as synnonymous with Army, which quite frankly is stupid. BMF instructors do come from the reg Army and TA, but also the RN, RAF, RNR, RMR, and auxillary!
By the way, I'd love to hear which quaification you have ATPC, RN RM PTI, RAF PTI? I think you could be useful to BMF. If you know how to Market, BMF, recruit and train their instructors and cut their overheads significantly and reduce the cost of the classes, I'm sure they would love to hear from you. Or could it be that you are under the impression that you just need to be a PTI and people will just turn up and pay you money?
Went along this morning to Graves Park and had a great time - I will definitely be back for more. Like BMF fanatic says, the best part is that it scales so well to ability, so everyone is pushed. For me, exercising with other people is key - when you work out by yourself its massively difficult not to fall into a comfort zone - if that doesn't apply to you then congratulations, but each to their own and in my (limited) experience, BMF and the type of activity they promote is not only valuable from a fitness perspective, but hugely enjoyable too. Two thumbs up

What a rude response. Is this how you would treat a potential customer if they asked you about insurance?
I would not ask David Lloyd if they had insurance because they have a physical building. They have a duty manager and policies and procedures in place. There is a big green first aid box at reception. You are using a park. People often drink in parks, leave litter. Dogs poo in parks, there are a number of risks.
How many instructors are there? If one person injured themselves, then would that affect the rest of the class if one instructor had to deal with it?
I did say good luck to you, you seem to have missed that.
mr_busdriver 26-08-2008, 20:53 I have to say BMF fanatic is getting a lot of unfair stick for his classes.
As stated, these are military type classes and so (at a guess) the odd person slipping over on a pile of dog s:gag:it while chasing accross a park is not such a big deal.
I do think this silly issue of insurance is killing sport off, people have to accept that if you do sport there is an element of risk, after all if you can't accept that then don't take part.
Again to be fair, if someone got injured in a gym, that too is likely to affect the running of the class, so the comparisions are a little unfair.
The public all in all will decide if it is good value or not. To me sport is all about getting people to take part, doing something positive etc.... and if someone falls on their a:loopy:se while sprinting accross a field, then so what? have a laugh, pick your self back up and then get on with the rest of the class.
This class sounds different from the norm, time will tell if the public like it.
joeldriver 27-08-2008, 11:02 I signed up last week - it's good motivation .. much bnetter than the gym .. I'll see how it goes when it get's darker sooner.. :)
bradley1983 04-10-2008, 15:24 Just to let everyone know who may have been put off by the location that the current Tuesday and Thursday evening classes will be moving to Hillborough Park before Xmas.
Check the British Military Fitness (www.britmilfit.com) website for details as to when this will be.
Saturdays will still be at Graves Park, with the intention in the Spring to build both venues up to 3 sessions a week.
