deano_dq 08-08-2008, 12:56 AM Thought you guys may like to know whats going on with The Bowery.....
The Bowery, situated on Devonshire St (opposite the West One complex) is a brand-new, custom built bar owned and managed by ex-Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson, James O'Hara of successful Sheffield club night, 'Threads.' and Michael Dean, manager of DQ and co-promoter of Threads.
The Bowery will be a hang-out for people who want to avoid the meat-market nonsense of many City centre bars, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with great music, food and drinks.
It'll be like going to your favourite local boozer, but in the centre of town.
Inspiration for the bar's name came from the legendary Bowery area of New York which became notorious for its saloons and gambling dens.
The Bowery bar will be situated on the ground floor of the building whilst the first floor will be occupied by the flagship store for UK fashion label, Supreme Being.
The shop will be managed by Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys and will stock exclusive clothing and accessories from a range of hand picked labels.
The Bowery opens to the public on Saturday 20th September 2008 with Toddla T, Matt Helders, Deano, O'Hara and Andy Nicholson. It will then open daily from 10am with a deli-style daytime menu offering sandwiches and snacks sourced from Yorkshire outlets.
In the evening the 200 capacity bar will host live acoustic sessions, quiz nights and DJ sets from a handpicked selection of the Steel City's finest DJs with occasional special national and international guests dropping in for unannounced performances.

"It'll be like going to your favourite local boozer, but in the centre of town." That`s a lovely idea but very tricky to pull off.

Strix 18-08-2008, 12:41 AM Pft - like you'd even notice Brude was in a pub (besides the stream of people fussing him and the odd 'woof' which translates as 'a dash of your finest honey coloured beer please landlord' :hihi: )

Were you at the Woodseats Festival? If so, your cakes are visually exquisite and delish totally ... but far too expensive for everyday eating, sadly! :P

missymarsbar 21-09-2008, 06:48 PM Did the Bowery open this weekend? I'd heard it didn't. Anyone know what's happening?
scargill 21-09-2008, 06:53 PM Had to be changed to a private party, still no license, no idea why though.
jazzamatazz 21-09-2008, 07:08 PM got a message on FB,it's opening on 23rd sept to joe public
here ya go
James O'Hara sent a message to the members of The Bowery, Sheffield.
--------------------
Subject: bad news.
I Have to be the bearer of bad news i'm affraid,
For reasons completely out of our control the Bowery will not be opening to the general public until Tuesday 23rd September,
i can't digress the reasons for this but i'm sure you'll all find out in due coarse.
We can open tonight only as a private party for family and friends, with a limited capacity and without the licence to serve alchohol.
Deano, Andy & James would like to apologise for the inconveniance caused and state once again that this was out of their control,
Don't let this ruin your weekend, Ed Maker is on at Threads!
once we've put the mum and dads to bed we'll be down there with a few surprise guests.
keep the faith.

Nice to know that Joe Public is not allowed to go in it until 23rd - I suppose even tho he is funding it that he is not worthing to mix with immortal Gods at the pre-opening such as Alex Turner ....
discodown 21-09-2008, 08:16 PM Nice to know that Joe Public is not allowed to go in it until 23rd - I suppose even tho he is funding it that he is not worthing to mix with immortal Gods at the pre-opening such as Alex Turner ....More likely its probably a trivial problem that can't be resolved till tuesday and not due to anyones ego. Chances are this is likely to be a highly successfull venue and god knows sheffield needs all the decent venues it can get
chris101 21-09-2008, 09:22 PM Not susprised it didn't opem went pass friday lunch and looked like the builders where behind schedule the building was just a shell.Look forward to it opening next week.
chris101 21-09-2008, 10:04 PM You dont expect Sheffield Newspapers to get thinghs right
Andy C 21-09-2008, 11:33 PM But the Sheffield Telegraph comes out once a week on Fridays......
Chris BIO 22-09-2008, 01:32 PM More to the point - have you seen the list of people who were invited and do you know the sexual orientation of everyone on that list? Or what difference are you suggesting a 'certain' celeb's sexuality makes to whether or not they were invited? Or are you just fishing for trouble? :suspect:
dunney 22-09-2008, 02:12 PM My daughter went on sat night. No licence explains why it was a free bar then. That must have been why she was p***ed then
pinkace 22-09-2008, 03:20 PM Think it was something to do with the council.
SimonS 22-09-2008, 03:40 PM I was going to pop in yesterday for a look but it was the private party.
There was a strange notice posted on the door that said something along the lines of.....you can't come in because it is a private party but someone from Reverand and the makers is dj'ing in here....... :loopy::hihi:
That made me laugh. I can't wait to go in and see it....

I was wondering about the name. Is it a reference to the street in Manhattan noted for cheap hotels frequented by homeless derelicts or is it in tribute to Leigh Bowery, flamboyant fashion guru who did notorious shows where he did public enamas?
Darkoak 29-09-2008, 06:20 PM Went in on Friday night at 9-ish and it wasn't that busy considering, A) It's a brand new bar and, B) They'd just emptied Revolution across the road because of a 'gas leak':suspect:.
I must say that bearing in mind the budget the owners probably had to spend on it and that they had a 'blank canvas' to work on, it was nothing out of the ordinary at all.
mrsmills 30-09-2008, 10:45 AM I was wondering about the name. Is it a reference to the street in Manhattan noted for cheap hotels frequented by homeless derelicts or is it in tribute to Leigh Bowery, flamboyant fashion guru who did notorious shows where he did public enamas?
But don't forget the Bowery is also a dangerously cool, upcoming gentrified area of NYC populated by cool, hip young people, the pseudo-cognoscenti and pseudo-glitterati - the perfect/typical model for a bar in Sheffield
I didn't appreciate, until the boarding came down from the site, a little while ago that that is where The Bowery was. From what I had read it sounded really promising, I just don't see how it can really live up to all that when it's located where it is - surely it will end up full of the kind of noisy drunkenness that it didn't seem to want to attract? Genuinely not wishing to have a go at it here but...
nick2 30-09-2008, 11:49 AM surely it will end up full of the kind of noisy drunkenness that it didn't seem to want to attract? Genuinely not wishing to have a go at it here but...
Every bar that has tried to be "selective" and "upmarket" has failed because, frankly, there arn't that many of the kind of customer they think they want in Sheffield, especially in town.
Perhaps they might pull it off on Ecclesall Road, but I doubt it in town.
boutiquechoc 30-09-2008, 11:55 AM It's a funny place to be located if you want to avoid the meat-market nonsense of all the other West Street/Division Street bars.
well I walked past on sat eve, and all I could see what the typical west street looking crowd in there: we were going to go in, but got put off when we saw girls with short white skirts and fake tans going in....

No surprises there then. Why oh why would you put it there? Why, why, why?
Oh well...best get on with another batch of home made advocaat then. ;)
Claret 01-10-2008, 08:03 AM I went in last night... not overly impressed. Looks nice inside, but nothing too special. It was DEAD too. Ok I don't expect places to be heaving on a Tuesday night, but I expected more than me and my friend and a middle age couple! There was a bouncer on the door - why oh why?? There were 3 lads and 1 girl on the bar who were obviously bored and trying to keep themselves entertained. We had one drink and went to the Frog and Parrot - which looks fab after the refit.
Carborundum 01-10-2008, 11:54 AM I have just been and I must concur - the place has absolutely no atmosphere at all which is surprising for a new bar - and seems to be full of posing Sheffield wanna be trendies hoping to get "noticed" ....

You have a problem with anywhere that doesnt host drag acts. They're always too posh for you- maybe take an inward look?
jamesogt 01-10-2008, 12:14 PM There was a bouncer on the door - why oh why?? .
It is on almost all city centre licensed venues, that they must employ door staff. Im sure they too would rather save the £15 an hr they cost!

I agree and think it;s hard to try something different when that area caters for that type. Places up the road are better, like the Ivory etc....perhaps they should've put it there. I hope it does well and will be going at some point but my initial view was 'oh dear, same as the rest'..
nick2 01-10-2008, 12:19 PM It is on almost all city centre licensed venues, that they must employ door staff. Im sure they too would rather save the £15 an hr they cost!
But the doormen don't seem to stop the idiots getting in, they just make sure they're well dressed idiots.
Claret 01-10-2008, 02:08 PM It is on almost all city centre licensed venues, that they must employ door staff. Im sure they too would rather save the £15 an hr they cost!
On a Tuesday night? I didn't see any outside any other bars.
mrsmills 01-10-2008, 02:16 PM I have to say, having door staff can almost give the wrong impression. The Old House, which I'm currently quite enjoying and has tempted me deeper into town than I've been for sometime, albeit only during the week has them and it seems incongruous with the atmosphere and almost a slight to the really nice crowd that's been there when I have. Of course if it's a condition of their licence that's another matter.
pinkace 01-10-2008, 08:59 PM I like this new bar the sofas are dead comfy, perhaps some table service on the quieter nights would be good and some drink offers, but on the Doorman note i would rather go in a bar thats prepared to pay for some decent security, after some of the dodgy scroatie characters that hang around the corners of west street and there abouts they seem to double in number when the new students arrive.
Carborundum 01-10-2008, 09:08 PM You have a problem with anywhere that doesnt host drag acts. They're always too posh for you- maybe take an inward look?
I dont know why you think I will only go to places with drag acts - it was just an honest critical review of the bar sen for the first time.
... But as it happens, Affinity was very good last night for the Tia Tuesday and her miming act was very good !
themole 02-10-2008, 12:22 AM Are drinks expensive?
skyblue1987 02-10-2008, 01:56 PM The door staff on tuesday might have been because of the football. Wednesday were at home to Nottingham Forrest and Blades were away but only at doncaster.
imagematters 04-10-2008, 06:53 PM Still waiting for me invite , dont want to tread on anyones toes
fabulous_girl 04-10-2008, 07:38 PM I went during the day today, was perfectly pleasant until they started playing music really loud - it was only 3;30 - we were tryingto have a conversation!
Porridge 05-10-2008, 03:48 AM Not a bad bar the security staff are very polite
pinkace 05-10-2008, 03:37 PM Must say had a really good night in here last night, very fine cocktails indeedy, and great music...
oxymoron 09-10-2008, 02:42 PM So I gathered that they do good cocktails, but do they have good selection of beers too? And any drink offers?
Johnny_B 10-10-2008, 05:18 AM Havin been in a couple of time to see what all the fus was a bout ive gotta say what a let down. the decor is rubbish, and as for the drink selection.. only red stripe on draft? whats that all about?
QUOTE=jamesogt;4126656]It is on almost all city centre licensed venues, that they must employ door staff. [/QUOTE]
How come the green room 100 yards away doesnt need them then? its more to do with the audience you aim at than anything. The Bowery is aimed at wanabes, that attracts idiots, hence they need doof staff so will not achieve the selective crowd they claim to be aimed at in anyway.
It's going to be if not already is just another bar on the west st / dev street crawl to be avoided by those not wanting th meat market atmosphere.
WYEXILE 10-10-2008, 08:37 AM Poor decor, devoid of atmosphere, trying too hard.

Much as I love draught red stripe I'm not dressing-up and kissing the arses of bonehead doormen (with the requisit "no trainers", "no t-shirts", "no whatever" reasons for not letting you in) to get to it, I can't be bothered.
the white rose 11-10-2008, 05:21 PM I was wondering about the name. Is it a reference to the street in Manhattan noted for cheap hotels frequented by homeless derelicts or is it in tribute to Leigh Bowery, flamboyant fashion guru who did notorious shows where he did public enamas?
According to a post earlier on in this thread, it's named after the area in Manhattan.
I only heard about the place for the first time yesterday as I've had my head up my backside with work for weeks and weeks, and I was really stunned at the coincidence that a bar has just opened in Sheffield with the name "The Bowery".
I have recently formed a publishing company in order to publish my novels, and the first is already listed on amazon and will be available to buy in a couple of weeks - it's called Mother-in-Law, Son-in-Law. Although the novel is set in Hertfordshire and London, it is, nevertheless, a novel coming out of Sheffield from a Sheffield publishing company.
And the fetish club that three of the characters in the novel frequent is called...tarumtara....The Bowery! I wrote this novel back in March and knew absolutely nothing about plans for the Sheffield bar. I always planned to name the club in my novel The Bowery as a tribute to Leigh Bowery whom you've mentioned, Alastair. And the shop where The Bowery punters buy their fetish gear is called Leighsh as another tribute to Leigh.
I didn't know Leigh Bowery but of course I remember seeing him around clubs during the pre-acid London music/club scene of the early eighties and he was...well...a legend. An artist. Brilliant.
Anyway, what a blooming coincidence, eh? Great minds think alike. :partyhat:
A bit off topic, but I was crossing Division Street yesterday afternoon to poke my nose through the door of The Bowery and I nearly got run over by a ned at the wheel of a white hatchback which came hurtling round the corner of Fitzwilliam Street and had to swerve to avoid hitting me. That is the third closest I've ever come to death in my life and I was really shaken up.
All coz The Bowery was named the same as The Bowery in my book. Life is stranger than fiction. :|
As to people's opinions on this thread. Look, any Yorkshire drinking establishment that wants to be taken seriously needs to serve well kept real ale. Real ale is the new black and some of us have been wearing black for decades. I had to practically beat Justin Rowntree (Silversmiths proprietor) over the head before he finally started stocking real ale. Actually Gordon Ramsey probably finally convinced him as Justin never listens to a word I say. :hihi:
If real ale isn't possible, then certainly a good selection of draught lagers and beers is a must. Bottle-only bars attract the fake tan, false nail brigade. Fact. Nowt wrong with fake tan and false nails btw if that's what floats your boat but I get the impression the proprietors of The Bowery are aiming for summat a little more classy.

Why is it that its always the doormans fault when people cant get in anywhere, Im sure they have to go on what the management say, most of the bars in sheffield have a no trainers etc...policy.

Erm no they don't at all, i can't remember the last time i wore shoes for a night out in Sheff.
I went in last Sunday, can't say I'll be in a hurry to go back.
chris101 12-10-2008, 12:42 PM well bet half the staff wear trainers. If the artic monkeys turn up wearing trainers bet they get in.

The days of "dressing-up" to go out at the weekend, in a "nice" shirt, "nice" trousers and "nice" formal shoes are long dead and gone, thank god. Anywhere that still has a dress code (unless it's a rubber fetish club) is, IMO, behind the times and doomed to dissapear up it's own pretentious arse.
If people still want to dress-up that's fine, but you can't force people, and there is absolutely no proof that people in nice top-man shirts and trousers are less likey to be gits than those who turn up in a t shirt and jeans,
Granted it's not the doormens fault and I wouldn't blame them if they applied the rules consistently, but as Chri101 said, they don't.
Went in this weekend it was ok, I'm getting too old for all the bars I think, I like a little space and being able to chat! Prefer old house/ parrot/ dev cat as they are a bit more relaxed.
I like places when they are quiet enough not to be barged into, it seemed to have a lot of the crystal type; young girls in very short outfits! (I'm only jealous:lol: ) it was a good mix and the music was pretty good. No real beer on tap but bottles of pale rider and stuff.

For once, I completely agree with nick2. It is utter rubbish that places think they can judge their customers based on what they wear. It's very out-dated - try a night out in the upmarket bars and clubs in London. Reckon you'll ever get refused entry because you're wearing trainers? Not bloody likely.
On principle, I refuse to go anywhere in Sheffield which has a dress-code. This place will be avoided by me.
nick2 13-10-2008, 03:22 PM Especially funny when one of the owners is quoted as saying "Everyone's welcome here. We don't want to be one of these places that doesn't let people in because they have a Henri Lloyd shirt on. We want people to come in and enjoy it."
On principle, I refuse to go anywhere in Sheffield which has a dress-code. This place will be avoided by me.
I did not think it had a dress code; I'm sure the blokes I was with were wearing trainers and most had just t-shirts on under thier coats, though I may be wrong. The door staff were very polite and dressed smart, that actually stuck in my memory for some reason

Anyone been in the clothes shop above it yet? The jackets are real nice...
heeleyrachel 13-10-2008, 11:27 PM Its like a small cave in there! Limited seating
nick2 14-10-2008, 10:12 AM So the people that are moaning couldnt get in for another reason, and are using the t'shirt + trainers as an excuse.
I haven't been turned away, I've never tried to get in., it sounds far too hip for plain old me.
brianthedog 14-10-2008, 10:15 AM I haven't been turned away, I've never tried to get in., it sounds far too hip for plain old me.
Ha ha! Likewise. I'm moaning because it sounds pretentious - and likely to be bust within 24 months.
nick2 14-10-2008, 12:00 PM It might go like Crystal, unbearable at the weekend but rather nice in the week.
Rossian 14-10-2008, 02:52 PM Going back through this thread I can't find anyone who was actually refused entry for wearing trainers. This thread has basically a series of badly misinformed presumptions:
1. They employ doormen (true)
2. The doormen must be there to stop people coming in wearing trainers (false)
3. They must have a strict dress code and be operating an elitist entry policy (false)
4. Based on all the above plus a quote from the owner saying they won't judge people on what they wear, we're gonna slag the place off (true)
Broody 15-10-2008, 03:34 AM i went, got ID'd, went to bar, got 3 bottles of becks for a fiver, i was happy!
Matt S 15-10-2008, 05:35 PM Had a good night last night, quite chilled out, good tunes not packed but busy enough for an atmosphere, no knobheads and some nice looking ladies around, all in all pretty good...
Carborundum 18-10-2008, 01:26 PM I tried to get in there last night but the doorman looked me up and down and turned up his nose - he said I wasnt dressed well enough and anyway did I not feel that it would not be an appropriate place for anyone over 35 - the so and so - and that I had to be "with it" which I clearly was not ... so I mooched away with my head down and went to the Green room - damn it I really really want to get into this place now to see what its like - I will have to smarten up my image, purchase Hello and see what the beautiful people wear - and then bone up on my Wittgenstein since I need to hold my own in conversation once I DO get in there :-(

speenie 19-10-2008, 10:09 PM nice place, went on tuesday pretty quiet - but over £8 for a bottle of some kind of beer and a glass of wine!!! only then did we notice the cocktail special offer - oh well. think the white fridge looks like an after-thought - in terms of aesthetic/styling. will go again though. oh, and i had trainers on!
jamesogt 22-10-2008, 01:40 PM ASST MOD Note-
If you would like to discuss the clothes shop above, then please start a new thread. It does not relate directly to The Bowery.
You have been asked to open a new thread relating directly to the clothes shop, this thread is clearly about the bar. Because it shares a building doesn't mean it needs to share a thread on the forum, it will just add confusion.
Matt S 26-10-2008, 04:48 AM went in again tonight, honestly much nicer than most of the meat market bars in town
thebowery 28-10-2008, 05:58 PM Hey Guys,
James O'Hara here, i'm one of the co-owners of The Bowery,
thanks for all the comments good and bad,
One thing i think needs clarifying however is the presumption that because we have doorstaff we must in turn have a strict door policy, it appears that people have been misinformed or are speaking in generalitys about other dress-code policied venues and everyone has got a little carried away and aimed their disgruntlement at The Bowery.
we do not have a dress code.
We have never turned anyone away for wearing trainers.
If you read back there is actually not one person who has been turned away for wearing trainers so that particular gripe seems to have snowballed from nowhere!
as Brianthedog said:
"On principle, i refuse to go anywhere in sheffield which has a dress code"
i have to say i completely agree.
Nice to see the comments about the Food, Its all sourced from local companys and we plan on changing the menu seasonally to keep it all fresh.
Nice to see people enjoying the Music too, we're trying to keep it varied so there's quite a variety from day to day.

Jonny5 28-10-2008, 07:38 PM I applaud the guys behind this venture for having a go, but the place could not be situated in a worse location.
Every bar that has tried to be "selective" and "upmarket" has failed because, frankly, there arn't that many of the kind of customer they think they want in Sheffield, especially in town.
Yep. You can lead a thirsty horse to water but you can't make it drink. Any decent bar is wasted on the West Street crowd.

Quick, lets move to Leeds... :loopy:
I hate this forum...

jamesogt 28-10-2008, 09:40 PM Hey Guys,
James O'Hara here, i'm one of the co-owners of The Bowery,
we do not have a dress code.
We have never turned anyone away for wearing trainers.
James, I will keep a copy of this in my pocket for when i show up in my trainers and hoody!
green 28-10-2008, 09:44 PM Every time ive gone in, ive been wearing trainers & hoody and had no probs.
The guys themselves at Bowery would never be seen dead in shiny shoes...:o
Matt S 29-10-2008, 12:57 AM Should a moderator who's also a landlord be posting things about a venue's doormen/entry policy? Seems a bit unnecessarily inflammatory to me..
Anyway, I can't understand why one minute people are saying 'ooh where it is it must be full of chavs' followed by 'ooh you can't wear trainers it must be snotty'... Make your minds up...
It's a nice bar, good service, good music, the owners are nice guys, the clothes shop above it is good...
Actually go, you might like it..
skipskap 26-11-2008, 03:03 PM Anyone know if the bar is open this Sunday (6pmish). Plan on going prior to The Fretellis gig, take a pike at the new Pete McKee pics. Can't access the facebook pages from this PC.
thebowery 26-11-2008, 03:07 PM yes sir,
the bar is open from 10am saturday serving food until 7pm.
feel free to come and wander around and have a gander at Mr Mckees new pictures, they're amazing.
Jim
skipskap 26-11-2008, 03:36 PM Thanks, trust that's the same opening on Sunday?
thebowery 26-11-2008, 03:42 PM slightly different,
open at 12 on sunday but open all day until 12 midnight.
Jim
emmie 27-11-2008, 02:08 AM I went in a couple of weeks ago - pretty packed but the music was good and so was the atmosphere. There were plenty of people in hoodies and trainers and plenty of people who fancied dressing up. Seems like they're sticking to the whatever goes policy to me x
CaptainChaos 27-11-2008, 09:10 PM I went in before the last shadow puppets gig, its reasonably priced (if you ignore the £4.50 pork pie!) and a jukebox you wouldnt believe.
James, good luck in this venture, you deserve it.
thebowery 28-11-2008, 04:12 PM thanks for the nice comments guys,
glad people are enjoying the place, we're certainly enjoying running it.
pop in over christmas and say hi.
