I usually spend the day on the allotment and usually take a picnic down for me and the kids but I am thinking of building a bbq/cooking station. I usually have a meths stove in the car but havent used it down there yet as I have had a picnic with me instead. I want to spend more time down there though but usually have to go home to make tea. So if i make a mini kitchen, we can have tea down there. Does anyone else do this and what do they cook on?
We often make bacon sandwiches on a little camping stove but we have bought a dutch oven which you can cook quite a lot in on a small fire but I think it takes a while - I think you can even bake bread in them - I bought a cook book too but I guess it may be better suited to colder weather when you can get stews and soups bubbling away !!
I am only just looking into getting an allotment - but what a good idea to cook down there - my kids would love that!!

Well my plan is, if i get it set up properly i can cook down there most days when the weather is reasonable. Then i wont mess up my kitchen. :D Our allotment is near rivelin park so the kids usually want to stay down there for ages but we all get hungry. Whilst we make varied picnics some hot food would be nicer around tea time.
Where are you trying to get an allotment?
Well ideally we wanted one rivelin way as i work in a school and that is between work and home but the only sites availble are at high wincobank or moss way. High wincobank is the on side of town where we live so we are going to view them this weekend to see what they are like. I have had stuff through shoeing empty plots so keeping fingers crossed that the site as a whole seems ok. Did appeal for any info on here about high wincobank but had no response as yet.
Have you had your plot long? We have outgrown our garden veg patch and with three kids and a fourth on the way our potato barrel just cant cope any longer so it is time to take on a bigger space! :hihi:

No we only just got ours this year but it was completley overgrown. We are a family with 4 kids too so know exactly where your coming from. I think everyone has been told they have to wait till next year for the plots at rivelin again as they have all been allocated. I would keep pestering though as there are a lot that seem to be vacant. Have a look round a make a note of them then phone the allotment office. My OH mum has been doing the same as they want a plot near ours.
good luck x

Thanks for that - if the ones at high wincobank dont look good when we go tomorrow I will do that. May be asking you for tips in the future too ;)
As for the cooking there are loads of things you can do on a bbq - and i dont mean the usuall sausages etc. Meths cookers are good but can take ages to cook the most basic things. What about one of those camping stoves that are portable that take the small gas bottles?

Yeah the meths cookers are slow but i just keep it in the car as its a little compact one. we do have one of those gas stoves but i dont want to leave anything down their as we have had a few things trashed. I am going to try and build a brick barbeque but with added extras so i should be able to cook almost anything on it. We are going to experiment with it so the kids should find it fun. :hihi:

how much does it cost to get an allotment and do u have to pay a weekly rent on it?
I used to have an allotment when i lived in wakefield, we used to use our camp cooker to have an evening meal, it was great as we could do all day there in the summer.

I have a friend with an allotment. I have had tea and biscuits there. She has a cast iron stove...but next year I would really like to build her a permanent BBQ that is wood burning so she can have friends around in summer. She lives in a flat and the allotment is her garden so to speak. I have also said I will make her a pit loo but she's not said yes to that yet.
