View Full Version : Upperthorpe shops - someone please rent one! (and not sell fast food)

It upsets me walking through upperthorpe every day - I can't understand the need for FIVE, yes five! fast food shops on a stretch of road no more than 200 metres long.

Where is the logic here? A large amount of the local population are elderly, and I cannot imagine Gertrude and Betty strolling down to Saudis for a quick kebab. Also, there must be some subtle irony at work, seeing that 2 have opened since the opening of the Healthy Living Centre.

And the worst thing here is that the only one that sells decent food (Pizza home - best pizza in sheffield, if not the world) is shutting down, due to the owner, chef, and agony uncle to just about everyone - Eiat(I can't spell his name) - is selling up, due to heart problems.

These fast food shops not only smell bad, but attract all manner of weirdos between the hours of 11pm and 3am every night. This doesn't give upperthorpe a very positive image, which is not helped at all by the new 24Hr tesco.

All I want is someone to open a nice honest store. A bakery, maybe. Those willing to pay a few extra quid are lucky to have Beanies just up the hill, but where do we go for bread?

Tesco, who hold a monopoly on supermarkets, and sell bad food at good prices. Does the money help to improve anything local? Just sits in Mr Tescoes pocket, and makes lots of shareholders very happy.

Not only this, but the shop fronts look terrible, all broken down and useless. It seemed a while ago there might be a nice change of face down here; workmen moved in and....dug up the road, put a 20 metre square brick pattern and left again (another success from local councilling!)

Not sure where I was going with this, but there seems to be much talk of centre of town and london road, just wanted to represent the forward-thinking side of upperthorpe/netherthorpe, not just the thugs that hang around near tescoes.

There's also a very bad parking/driving problem - people going up through the bus gate, parking on the zig-zags/double yellows leading up to the zebra crosing, which can make crossing a total nightmare (especially when there's a bus trying to get through.

'Twas done for the "royal" visit a couple of years ago. Another total waste of our cash:loopy:

yes, its a shame that there is NO sensible parking for the healthy living centre. And as much as I love upperthorpe I wouldnt recommend to anyone to leave their bike unattened in the middle of that paved area.

The healthy living centre is just another example of a nice idea planned badly.

There is a free car park across from the medical centre, and it always seems to have some spaces available. I agree about the run-down shops though... would be good if there was a bit more variety than loads of junk food places.

Could do with some variety just up the road near the Boomerang too... a few closed down shops and a butchers which seems to be open, but never has any customers in it.

The problem with Upperthorpe is that since TESCO took old Safeway site, all the people that used to park in Safeway carpark all day now have to park elsewhere. This includes those that work locally, the old infirmary building, and those that parked there to catch tram into town.

Perhaps if this was sorted and the area designated a shopping area with adequate parking things may improve.

Hence, I assume, fast food outlets enable people to park there out of working hours.

I purchase my daily paper on the parade of shops. I also have a connection with the E-Zone so I can appreciate your posting

You want to drive to a healthy living centre? Doesn't that seem strange to you?
