honeyb35 06-08-2008, 14:46 came across this:
http://uk.messages.news.yahoo.com/Showbiz/threadview?m=tm&bn=UKN-ENT-News&tid=2788&mid=2788&tof=1&frt=2
and it got me thinking! Whats the forums favourite British film?
dead mans shoes.
pure genius.
It has to be 'Brief Encounter', though I have a soft spot for 'The Full Monty' too.
Beakerzoid 06-08-2008, 15:40 Too many to list entirely, but slate the majority of the Ealing output (ladykillers etc), a few Carry Ons, Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, This Is England, anything Python, 28 Days Later, Dog Soldiers, etc etc
EdnaKrabappe 06-08-2008, 17:46 Possibly Brassed off. Although can we class Four Weddings? As it would be that then.
Completely changed my mind... forgot about About a Boy. It's that one.
It's the Will one liners... esp the one about him being a Godfather.
honeyb35 06-08-2008, 19:53 I've not seen some of these! My OH would agree with the carry on films lol, he watches them a lot! I like 'little voice', 'full monty', 'kinky boots', 'love actually', a few of the harry potter films, I like a lot of the period dramas too, but I never know if they are properly 'british' or just American directors coming over and filming here :hihi:

It's a commonly debated issue as to what actually makes a film British. Some franchise, such as Bond and Potter, are classed as British by mnay, despite the American money invested in them, due to the origins being British (books), the filming being mainly British, and the lead cast & roles being British.
Wikipedia has a great section on British films at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_films and you can click on the years to the side to see what films were out that year which had British production (including Basic Instinct 2 bizarrely enough)
NEKRO138 07-08-2008, 08:19 Dead Man's Shoes for me too.
loobylou-lou 07-08-2008, 19:04 For me it has to be Rebecca closely followed by Mrs Miniver
Oooh hard one. I'll have to think about it and come back to it. Of recent years probably a Shane Meadows film and I'm torn between Dead Man's Shoes, Room for Romeo Brass and This is England. I think This is England is the better film but my personal favourite is Room for Romeo Brass. I've also not seen too many Mike Leigh films except Vera Drake and Happy go Lucky. I know they are considered to be excellent, I'll have to check them out. And then I've not even considered old films.
Dead mans shoes is my favourite all time film.
Hard hitting, funny, sad, it has everything!
Funky_Gibbon 23-08-2008, 23:44 Get Carter. Fantastic film.
No actually I take that back. The best British film is A Matter Of Life And Death.
Dead Man's Shoes .. closely followed by Small Time. I adore Shane Meadows.
SO many to choose from, some of my personal faves include.
Kes
Four Weddings and a Funeral
The Full Monty
All 5 Harry Potters
All the Monty Pythons
thecrookes 24-08-2008, 12:44 dead mans shoes.

Yes, I saw this the other night and was very impressed. Real gritty, dark and heart felt, with two major realisations at the end. He did the right thing!

The best British film ever made is without question "Withnail & I".

I first saw If... at the ABC on Snig Hill and didn't really understand it. I recently saw it again at the Showroom and...er...didn't really understand it. Great film though, with lots of food for thought.
These are the kind of films I like. I can't stand the drivel that relies on special effects.
Has to be The Third Man for me.
One of the best entrances for any character ever (Orson Welles) in that film. I love it.
I will also agree with pretty much anything directed by Shane Meadows, as well as 28 Days Later.

1) Zardoz, 2) Bedazzled (with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore) and 3) Laugther in Paradise (the black and white one).
mywufwuf 23-05-2009, 21:08 Hobsons Choice followed by To Sir With Love. How about Lawrence of Arabia and for comedy Life Of Brian. Then there's the 60's with The Lonliness of The long Distance Runner, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, This Sporting Life & A Taste of Honey. There are so many!
It's good to see British cinema still strong at the cinema. Went to see Looking for Eric last night at The Showroom, good film. In perhaps 20-30 years we can look back and say 'them where the days' like we can do now with other Ken Loach films like Kes and Poor Cow. Although where they the good days? We have never had it so good!
Little_Extra 25-06-2009, 10:21 I'm surprised at the lack of love for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz! But I have to agree with Withnail and I being probably the best film ever made, not just the best British film!
I'll third Withnail, at one point my flatmate and I could recite the first fifteen minutes off the cuff. I do think the Pink Panther films need to be mentioned at some point though.
