has anyone ever noticed that if you brush your teeth before you go to sleep you always wake up with a foul tasting mouth and really smelly breath?

and if you dont brush your teeth you wake up with a reasonable mouth!

Always easier to do it that way round, rather than brushing your teeth after you go to sleep!:D

Smelly breath often has nothing to do with the mouth... it's all about the stomach.

If you're hungry the smell on your breath is from the acids in your stomach trying to eat your stomach!

The same if you eat garlic... the smell's from your stomach.

My breath does sometimes smell bad if I don't brush my teeth. It is normally because I've had a kebab the night before, after a night on the town. It's all to do with the rotting "meat" between the teeth and chilli sause and cabbage on your chin! You can't buy class you know!

Not according to most medical information:

For the majority of people (85 to 90% of those who have bad breath [halitosis]), the single most frequent cause of their breath odor problem is related to conditions in their mouth. More specifically, bad breath is usually caused by the bacteria that live in a person's mouth. Bacteria, just like people, go through their lives consuming foods and excreting wastes. The wastes of some oral bacteria are sulfur compounds and it is primarily these odoriferous wastes which usually lie at the root of a person's bad breath.

Have you ever smelled a rotten egg? The stink associated with rotten eggs is produced by the sulfur compound hydrogen sulfide. The smell emanating from feed lots and barnyards is one produced by the sulfur compound methyl mercaptan. Both of these compounds are excreted as wastes by the bacteria that live in our mouths.

Together these compounds are commonly referred to as "volatile sulfur compounds" (VSC's). The term "volatile" describes the fact that these compounds evaporate readily, even at normal temperatures. The extreme volatility of VSC's explains how these compounds have the ability to offend those around us, instantly.

Smoking helps make it worse, and alcoholic mouthwashes may exacerbate the problem as they also kill the 'good' bacteria in your mouth.

Your mouth is an ecological environment all of its own, with an abundance of flora and fauna.

The stomach does not affect your breath unless you are belching a lot.

Let's not get confused between "morning breath" (which is what was being talked about) and halitosis, which is where you have bad breath all the time.

Anyway, the stomach does effect breath...

"Countless people suffer from acid reflux disease. Acid reflux is a condition in which stomach acids are pushed from the stomach into the esophagus, creating a burning sensation or heartburn. Because the acid that is pushed up from the stomach had been used to digest food, the result is gassy, foul-smelling acid reflux bad breath."

Have to agree with phan on this one. There are millions of micro-organisms in the mouth all reproducing and all respiring, giving off smell.

The smell of food in the stomach will very rarely be reflected in the mouth as the oesophagus is closed and so will not let anything back up. Certain strong foods such as garlic will contain oils that pass into the blood stream and through the lungs so will be breathed out which is the only real link between what you eat and the smell that comes out of your mouth unless you have bits left in your mouth.

If you think of all those hours youre asleep with your mouth closed and all those bacteria working away in there your breath is bound to smell cos of all the stuff theyve given off all building up on around the gums and teeth.

Acid reflux is a disgestive disorder which can be very serious and is extremely unlikely to be the presumed reason behind a persons bad morning breath unless they spend all night with very bad heart burn in which case they should see their doctor.

In reply to the orginal question - maybe your toothbrush harbours too many micro-organisms so when you brush your teeth you add to them??

I agree Kittykat. It's bacteria in the mouth that smells.
Change your toothbrush often.
Dental floss twice a day to get the food out from inbetween the teeth. Decaying teeth also smell.
Brush or scrape your tongue.
Anyone that thinks they don't get morning breath is living in denial.

Gastro-oesophagal reflux is unmistakeable- it's that almots puking sensation when the vomit goes as far as the back of the throat, but no further. You get that nasty burning sensation and yes, bad breath.

But unless you actually suffer from GOR a lot, it is most likely your (my) bad breath is caused by microorganisms in the mouth.

i too suffer from smelly breath, but believe the problem originates from my stomach, i suffer from i.b.s, and think that my bad breath is a result of this. Does anyone know a cure? i've tried mouthwashes, and also a number of probiotic supplements, this sometimes helps, but does anyone know of a better cure, please help, it's making my life a misery.
