I notice the previous tennents cars have now gone, is the place empty now?
The way things are going, it looks like it will be flattened:(

I lived @ Hallam Head 1975 to 1983, used to drink in the Sheff once a week from 1981 to around 1983.....it was quite good then, a tight ship, no pun intended. mainly pensioners in one side sipping halves of mild.....it was the best pub in the area until the Plough turned into a fub pub in September 82....

The last tenants finally left the premises around a month ago. A shame because I know for a fact how much effort and money they put into that place. They were lead a merry dance by Enterprise Inns and if the latter had offered the 'flexible terms' it is purporting to offer new tenants then there's a very good chance they would have stuck it out.

I have heard of one or two 'interested parties' but this is not the place to discuss that matter.

I truly hope that it reopens soon and that the next tenants don't get their fingers burnt. Whilst I love the beer, food and company of the Sportsman at Hallam, it's not as convenient as the Sheff and doesn't quite feel like home. I've been going to the Sheff since 1982 (when my parents were regulars and I was happy to sit in the car with a Bass Shandy and a packet of Walkers).

My fingers are crossed that the place can rise from the ashes.....again.

This is only hear-say, but I gather that the other day there was a group of Chinese-looking people talking to a man in a suit in the carpark, and 20 minutes later when my friend drove past again they were still there in deep discussion.

I know of quite a few former pubs in other areas that have been successfully converted into upmarket Chinese restaurants, and in view of the problems that previous tenants have had in making a 'go' of the Sheff as an ordinary pub, this might be a good option. I think it would be a good amenity for the area. I would certainly patronise it.

Managed to see the literature from Enterprise Inns and basically you need £36,500 before the keys are passed over. On top of this you need working capital, have to buy all products from Enterprise Inns (at their staggeringly inflated prices), pay insurance (arranged through EI, no doubt another high fee) AND decorate the premises inside and out within certain timescales whilst there.

The minimum lease is five years.

Perfect for a blind, stupid millionaire perhaps, but anyone else seriously interested would have to question their sanity.

Still, sitting from this side of the bar, I wouldn't mind either!

how long before the place starts to get vandlised? (perhaps thats what EI want so they can sell off a prime piece of land to the developers).

Absolutely. I noticed they'd started cleaning it up yesterday and they're still busy today. They've pulled down all the "To Let" signs too. It's a shame for the kids who'd just started using the pub signs and some empty crates to make a skateboard park in the car park!!! Depends what kind of a pub the new tenants want the Shiny Sheff to be. From what I've heard it's going to be a traditional pub with a carvery. As long as the beer's fine, that's pretty much all that matters to me.

The last tenants decided to do away with Andy and Mandy (karaoke - Thursday nights) simply because they decided to host the evening themselves. I will mention to the new tenants if they intend to get Andy and Mandy back or get someone else in - providing they want a karaoke at all.

Andy and Mandy are smashing people but their karaoke collection is somewhat limited.

Still, we'll see. I intend to be in there in a week's time and I shall let you know what I learn from that visit.

Well they are clearing the decks for action and weighing the anchor next week I believe.....she should be flapping her sails and entering the high seas, so with a first class Captain and crew, the Shiny Sheff should be sea worthy.......however, the waters are rather stormy at the present so she will have to make sure she stays afloat until calmer waters approach....here endeth the shipping forecast

This is true but also so many pubs open up again and never advertise the fact at all and just rely on word of mouth or tiny little signs in windows......by the time everyone knows it is back open its often too late.....I believe in making a BIG opening statement (as if you didn't know):hihi:

Not suggesting set of Can can Dancers on the bar, or some big extravagance, but you know what i mean.
....the message has to get out into the world so that ALL your potential market knows WHO, WHAT, WHERE and WHY you are!!!!!!

Sheffield Forum is ideal for this...and if you are clever enough you can start a whole thread that will run for ages and ages and as well as inform all of your plans can also do you a great deal of market research and feedback at the same time......believe me, free promotion is easy, and very very effective.

It would be great for all pubs that re-open to come into this forum and do a nice thread about what will be happening, what the guest beers are, and give a vague 'mission statement' or something like that, so everyone can see what is happening......many do already and its a create forum for providing information to the public...

Not guilty.

I am a regular of the Shiny Sheff and my car is very often left in the car-park over night. I'll be calling in three to four times a week like I used to, hopefully.

I am truly looking forward to its re-opening.

My wife makes signs and banners and she offered to make some big banners for the new landlord to promote the fact that it's opening up again. Strangely, the only sign stating the fact that it's opening is a little piece of green cardboard inserted in the window.

you lot need to "walk the plank" with all these gags!

shame the shiny sheff has been so up and down in recent years as I only live down the road and inevitably have ended up either at the Rising Sun (in recent times ) or at the Ranmoor Inn (which is a great pub) as the Sheff never "felt" right.

good luck to the new tenants.

The early signs are promising.

A blackboard states that Thursday nights will see karaoke return, Friday nights are Steak Nights, Saturday will see Live Music and Sunday nights offer the chance of taking part in the quiz.

Other blackboards state there will be 2 for 1 offers on certain menu items although there won't be any food on till this Wednesday - and I hope they sort out credit and debit card facilities.

The pub feels bright and clean. A TV screen linked to a computer hard drive played video and music non-stop (giving an instant atmosphere). Strangely, I noticed no fruit machines and even the machines in the gents have disappeared!

The management are opening throughout the day to begin with but will no doubt review this after a few weeks.

Beerwise, I was informed that Black Sheep will be coming soon; presently there is just Marston's Pedigree on tap. Guinness has made a return over Murphy's.

Finally, another sign declares the pub as being family friendly and like a dog leaving its scent at the foot of a favourite tree, yes, that was my car left in the car park overnight.

Well I was somewhat annoyed when yesterday afternoon I planned to meet my mum at the Shiny Sheff. Rushing through a nice burger up at the Sportsman, we got to the Sheff to find it...closed. Again, no signs informing us at to why it was closed although I'd guess they were installing additional speakers and flat screen TVs for tonight's karaoke (which I would have imagined they could have done even if the place was open).

People need to know what's going off. My wife actually makes and designs banners - she did most of them for the previous tenants - and has told the new tenants that she could run some banners up for them, but as yet, they've not shown any interest.

I seriously want this place to work but lack of communication which leads to people like myself finding an alternative (in yesterday's instance, The Plough) is not going to bring customers and their much-needed revenue in!

The Plough is doing pretty well I'd say, as a regular (it's my 'very' local). Like most pubs, it could do with a few more customers, but Suday is usually good for the quiz, and they do very well on their food trade.

Their foods great, but it always seems quiet. Has their food trade picked up?

From what the staff say, it's normally busy for food at late tea-time, but I'm not normally in at that time. They have quiet days of course, but from what they say it goes well. The only time I have been in at early evening it was pretty busy, and Sunday lunch always seems to have a good crowd in eating when I've been in - but I could just be lucky :)

Well I was right about their closing for installing speakers and so on. There was cable everywhere so I guess it made sense to close (although, like I say, a bit of info to the outside world would not have gone amiss).

Popped in last night and things are looking good. Two For One food (on certain dishes), a newly prepared menu, the fruit machine is back in its rightful place and there was Old Speckled Hen on tap as well as Black Sheep.

There were one or two in and the place had a nice laid-back feel. Plasma screens are going to go up in the Tap Room and another one in the lounge.

£2.50 for a pint of bitter. Can't complain.

Went for Sunday carvery today and it was was pretty good. Perfectly cooked and presented well, friendly staff and attentive service. Good Chef. Will be going back, I even prefer it to the 3 Merry Lads up the road and its certainly cheaper.

Not too busy, plenty of space, no screaming kids chucking peas at you, it has my vote, and for those who know me, I very RARELY give praise to pubs as so many have not one clue what they are doing!!!

My only critique was the staff did not know the ropes too well, as its only just re-opened, but were friendly and chatty and approachable... I give full credit for the definite lack of the 'can't be arsed' attitude you find in so many pubs these days. The credit card machine was not up and running yet, and my pot of tea was a tad on the cool side, but these are minor niggles, compensated for by the excellent main course.

Superb desert, white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake with cream.....YUMMY!!!!

All in all, pretty good value and I can see the Sheff develop into a first class destination food pub in this area if the standards are maintained and the niggles removed. Watch out THE PLOUGH and the MERRY LADS.......the Shiny Sheff is back!!

Glad to hear the positive vibes.

I will hopefully try the food on Wednesday. My mum phoned to see if I wanted to join her for the Shiny Sheff's Friday Steak Night.

Sadly, I was too poorly to say yes (typical!) and haven't been in since last Thursday because of this awful, nasty, cough.

I genuinely feel that Neil and Sally can have a very positive effect on this place. Infact, it almost feels 'loved' again.

Its described as a carvery and they appeared to have all the serving hardware which is external to the kitchen, but it was not in use on Sunday. The carvery 'hardware' was in a corner in the front bar area, perhaps they had not time to set it all up for the first Sunday.

well all seems ship shape so far, pleasant and friendly managers(Sally and Neil ) and James the barman , pleasant atmosphere the food seems to be going well the beers are good and kept well, the pub itself is bright and clean (cleaner than used to be).
Both Sally and Neil are freindly and like to chat to the users of The Sheff, so things are are looking good so far , lets hope more people get in there and sample the place.

Sally and Neil are hosting a Halloween Fancy Dress Party on Friday 31st October. Kids are welcome and can stay till 9pm which means they can take part in the games and win a prize for best dressed Halloween outfit!

I've noticed one or two new faces since the Shiny Sheff re-opened and as my local I'm happy to promote the place. Here's a sample of what's on offer:

Mondays - Currioke - £5.95 - Curry buffet followed by karaoke. Again, kids are welcome till 9pm;

Thursdays - Karaoke from 9pm usually featuring Mike Turner (X Factor, Britain's Got Talent etc). This guy has to be seen to be believed;

Fridays - Steak Night followed by themed music or race night with games;

Saturdays - Live entertainment. Chris Johnson plays 22nd November, Danni performs on 25th October. On 6th December Reservoir Rocks perform, a classic rock and pop band. There are other acts lined up too.

Sundays - Carvery 12 - 3 £5.95 and a quiz night where the winner can claim up to 8 pints.

Local pubs like the Shiny Sheff rely totally on the support of the community which surrounds them. Don't compare the price of a pint (Black Sheep and Old Speckled Hen both retail at £2.50) with the price of a 12 pack from the supermarket. You're paying for a night out, in decent surroundings, something a bit different. The chance to meet new friends or catch up with old ones.

It's your local boozer, use it or lose it!

PS. I wonder if the three girls found their way to Alton Towers. Travelling from Birmingham they arrived just before noon at the Shiny Sheff. Maybe they put garbage into their sat-nav. Alton Towers' post code is ST10 4DB. Lodge Moor will have a post-code of S10 4DB. Durr!!!

You're kidding! Really? I can't believe they drove all the way to the Shiny Sheff from Birmingham when they wanted somewhere in Staffordshire. They *must* have realised they were going the wrong way and if they didn't, I really don't think they should be on the road!

Tis true - ask Sally in the Sheff!

You'd imagine that by the time there were signs for South Yorkshire they'd have guessed that they might be slightly off target!

But the cynic in me says they were probably graduates with a cupboard full on A levels and yet still had to rely on a Sat-Nav system to get to Staffordshire.

I can picture them with a map book held upside down: "Well, if we continue in this direction, Aberdeen's a few minutes away. Er, I think we might need to turn around.":hihi:

"We will be on page 47 next, but page 48 and 49 are missing so we may get lost and not get to page 50. Sat Nav says turn around where possible but I think that is wrong so best drive straight on and sooner or later we should get to page 50. That last road we drove along does not exist as its a white square on this map so there may be another page missing that is numbered wrongly. The road signs bear no relation at all to page 46 so they are obviously wrong, we are definitely on page 46 as 2 hours ago we were passing out of page 41 and across the central stapes..the roads must be out of date."

Not in the slightest bit surprised.

To have great ideas for a pub is one thing but not to have the nous [practical intelligence] how to treat long-standing regulars (who are prepared to put between £100 and £150 behind the bar each week) is another matter entirely.

I stopped going in three weeks back for reasons I'll keep to myself but sometimes a bit of professionalism and experience - particularly in these most difficult of times - wouldn't go amiss.

The Shiny Sheff's loss (for now at least) is The Sportsman's gain, the latter of which is a place to go should inexperienced managers wish to see how it's done.

That must be the shortest tenancy on record ... its a shame as the young couple in there seemed to have the enthusiasm and the experience from running the Hallowes in Dronfield.
I hear from a reliable source that the George & Dragon in Beighton closes at the end of the month.

Wasn't 3 weeks before this their Halloween event?

And I'm genuinely curious to know how in God's name one individual can put £100-£150 behind a bar counter in a week without spending a huge amount of time in there and/or having a serious drink problem.

£100 is £ 15 per day, if you lived next door and had 2 meals a week there with a partner it is quite conceivable, 2 or 3 pints after work and a burger. People can spend their money how they see fit, a lot of people enjoy the social side of pubs without having a drink problem.

Why, thank you.

Indeed, I will spend my money as I wish and £150 a week on beer isn't that much when it usually includes my wife and sometimes my two girls. Throw in some food and that can easily amount to £200 a week 'put behind a bar'.

I live a five minute walk from the Shiny Sheff. Sometimes I'd call in on the way home from work; I might spend three or four hours in there on a Sunday; might meet up with the family for a Saturday early bar.

(But as I said, I'm no longer parting with my cash in that particular pub. The Sportsman and Fulwood Inn is where that money is going.)

Finally, 'drink problem'? Well yes, I like a drink but as long as my drinking doesn't affect the likes of Our Irene, I don't quite know what business it is to anybody else.

Woh there - we're a bit defensive arent we? I assumed you meant just yourself and not your family - and if that's including food too then yes it becomes a lot more obvious. And no, it doesn't affect me directly, but I'd be concerned about anyone who I thought was spending £150 a week on drink for themselves with kids at home!

The Shiny sheff is open, the blinds are closed to make it cosy and warm inside, food is available Tues-Sun 12 - 2pm but you need to book for evening meals.
There is live music every Saturday night which has been fantastic up to now.
And a variety of stuff to do on most nights, including quiz's, karaoke, race nights, theme nights, film nights, curry nights, carvery! there is a whats on guide inside with all gig listings etc
There has been a lot of time and effort put into trying to make this pub work but what it needs is more customers or it will not survive and close like hundreds of others.
you have a great venue on your doorstep people, use it!:help:us make it work
