View Full Version : Anyone Running The Great Yorkshire Run - Sheffield?
Agent Orange 05-08-2008, 16:01 I am thinking about entering the Great Yorkshire Run, which takes part in the city of Sheffield. I was wondering if anyone ran it last year, if so what route does it take and how was the experience? Also, looking to hear from people who are entering this year's run?

Cheers,

Kthebean 05-08-2008, 16:05 I'm in..
Shameless sponsorship plug (www.justgiving.com/kathyatkinson)
I'm running for the Anthony Nolan Trust.
You should enter we could do it together!
Agent Orange 05-08-2008, 18:52 I am deffo gonna enter... not sure of my timing as I havent trained for a long while and need to get myself sorted pronto. What time you looking into getting around?
arachnophobe 05-08-2008, 19:34 I should also be running, other commitments permitting... :suspect:
I'd probably be happy with anything under an hour! Although it might be less, if I can squeeze some proper training in.
Kthebean 05-08-2008, 20:09 Last one I ran in one hour eleven. So this one I'd like to do in one hour five or less.
Agent Orange 05-08-2008, 21:16 Oh wicked. Last 10k I did was many moons ago and I was suffering a nasty cold, but got through it in 1 hour. I was aiming for 55 mins, but we will have to see how the training goes. I am happy to run with you guys if you want. Mobile forum meet haha.

I haven't done an organised run in about 5 years... perhaps we can do a practise 10k at the camping meet! :hihi:
I should know by next week whether I'll be running it or not for definite. It's lucky that we're all aiming for similar times tho.
russcutts 05-08-2008, 22:19 I'll be there running the Great Yorkshire Run. Am hoping to go sub 45mins last 10k on the road I did was 47min.
Best advice for training is just get out on the road and run, every other day if you can.
All the best
Agent Orange 06-08-2008, 07:18 I haven't done an organised run in about 5 years... perhaps we can do a practise 10k at the camping meet! :hihi:

Erm, it's a bit hilly up those parts and I think the others might object to a organised run :D
Yup, would be good to run as a group to keep each other motivated on the day. I shall be doing rugby tonight, but then will be starting my running once more either Thursday or Friday
I ran it last year, just inside the hour mark.
I entered for this years a couple of months back to get myself back into the plodding, but various injuries have kept me from running recently... not looking too hopeful right now :(
Agent Orange 06-08-2008, 08:46 I ran it last year, just inside the hour mark.

WHat was the course like?
I think the correct term is 'undulating' ;)
Last year (course may have changed) it was all road, out and back. Some small down hills, some short up hill bits.
Agent Orange 06-08-2008, 09:54 Great stuff... not like I am new to running in Sheffield as I have done 2 of the half marathons. Best get the trainers on and hit the streets.

come on agent....my dad did a 10k this year in 42:50 and he's 63....pull your finger out hahaha.
alright..he has been running a fair few years...but that's besides the point :p
good luck to all! i dont run due to dodgy knees, dodgy legs, dodgy skins....basically just dodgy
Kthebean 06-08-2008, 11:46 God I feel a bit slow now! Truth be told I am a bit slow. Mebbes should do some training this time?
Agent Orange 06-08-2008, 13:54 Ok, that does it... sub 50 minute run it is :P
arachnophobe 06-08-2008, 20:55 Ok, that does it... sub 50 minute run it is :P
Sod running with you then! :hihi:
But if anyone want's to do a lap of the course before the day (and knows the course!) let me know cos I'll be up for it.
Agent Orange 07-08-2008, 07:23 So, we gonna have Team SF, consisting of myself, Arachnophobe and Kthebean?
But if anyone want's to do a lap of the course before the day (and knows the course!) let me know cos I'll be up for it.
If I do that I'd be in no state to run in on the day!
Agent Orange 07-08-2008, 09:06 But if anyone want's to do a lap of the course before the day (and knows the course!) let me know cos I'll be up for it.
Aye... as mentioned previously. Running a day before might not be a good idea unless you want to struggle on the actual day :D
metaphoria 07-08-2008, 09:43 Just out of interest, what time does it start?
Can't find it in the link.

Not sure, would imagine around 9, but all posters just say 'am' on them
The numbers etc will be sent out before long, it'll all be in there with your number.

I said before the day, not the day before! I meant a week or two before the actual race. Although time is already ticking away... :suspect:
*resolves to acually do some training in the next few weeks* :help:

Ooops... I need to learn to read. If I knew the exact route of the course then I would be happy to give it a go a week or so before the event. I shall be starting my training tonight, with any luck.
arachnophobe 07-08-2008, 19:47 I'm printerless at the moment- if someone who wants to do a practise run could print out the course map (it's on the link in the OP), we can give it a whirl. And Mr Orange, we must go for a jog on the camp meet.
Agent Orange 07-08-2008, 19:53 Yeah, ok we can do the course before the event and also run at the camp meet too. Best avoid drinking too much though lol.
arachnophobe 07-08-2008, 20:12 Yeah, ok we can do the course before the event and also run at the camp meet too. Best avoid drinking too much though lol.
We can drink afterwards! :D To rehydrate, of course. :suspect:
Just did a plodding 5-miler, that's further than I thought I'd manage (however slowly). So am on course, phew!

Oh, you have done a few more than me. I have this stupid cough to contend with so I am holding back on the training until that goes. Right, we just need to get Kthebean on the act too.. as she aint coming to the camp meet we will have to get a training run sorted soon separate from the camp meet one.
As for rehydrating, it is essential

Yes, the more the merrier! Team SF! :D
Agent Orange 07-08-2008, 20:54 Yes, the more the merrier! Team SF! :D
Is that like Team America? :suspect:
arachnophobe 07-08-2008, 20:58 Is that like Team America? :suspect:
Well it'll certainly be comical! :hihi:
For the spectators, not for us... :(
Agent Orange 07-08-2008, 21:03 Well it'll certainly be comical! :hihi:

Yeah, too right lol. I have now seen the route and think that aint so bad. Most of it is on Penistone Road which is flat  Deffo up for a few dummy runs. I mean that in the literal sense :hihi:

Righto, let me know when that cough has disappeared and we'll sort out a time... I'm sure we can get Kthebean & a few others in on the act as well.
metaphoria 07-08-2008, 23:51 Unfortunately I'm working that weekend, and wouldn't be able to time schedule-which is a shame, as I would have liked to have taken part in this. :(
So all I can say is best wishes for your training guys, and have fun on the day. Will be interested in reading your training progress though. :)
....Most of it is on Penistone Road which is flat  ...
Changed from last year by sounds of it, can you point me at an online course map?
Agent Orange 08-08-2008, 09:30 Changed from last year by sounds of it, can you point me at an online course map?
The course map is available in the link in the OP. The route seems to come out of town and follows Penistone Road from West Bar out to Hillsborough Football ground and then comes back on itself.
Metaphoria.... sorry to hear that. You would have been a much welcomed member of Team SF. Maybe next time?
The course map is available in the link in the OP.
Ooops!
The route seems to come out of town and follows Penistone Road from West Bar out to Hillsborough Football ground and then comes back on itself.
I guess that means there's no excuse for me not to try (at least part of) the route as I live on it!
GrannyGranny 08-08-2008, 11:11 I ran it last year, it was in June and quite hot. Not ideal conditions. It went up Abbeydale Road to Millhouses park and back so quite a tough course. It was a great atmosphere, hopefully there will be plarger numbers this year.
This years is in september so hopefully cooler and looks a flatter course until the last bit after Park Square.
Can't make it this year, going camping with the family, can't let the kids down.
Good luck to everyone
Agent Orange 08-08-2008, 14:56 Ta. My only reservation is about the course as it lacks interest. I mean, it's a long stretch of dual carriageway with very little keep your mind off the pain etc :hihi: Oh well, the training must start asap otherwise I will be feeling the pain haha.
arachnophobe 08-08-2008, 18:34 Thanks GrannyGranny. It's a shame it's not the same route this year, as that's exactly where I've been running! And Penistone road does sound a little dull...:(
Agent Orange 08-08-2008, 19:04 Oh it will be ok... if we are running as a team then the conversation should make up for the lack of exciting scenery :D
arachnophobe 08-08-2008, 19:09 Oh it will be ok... if we are running as a team then the conversation should make up for the lack of exciting scenery :D
Well you can entertain me then, seeing as you think you will have enough breath left for conversation! ;)
Agent Orange 08-08-2008, 19:24 Erm, no idea how I will manage that, but I'm sure I can muster up enough breath :D
metaphoria 09-08-2008, 00:03 Metaphoria.... sorry to hear that. You would have been a much welcomed member of Team SF. Maybe next time?
Thankyou, and yeah maybe.
Agent Orange 09-08-2008, 00:13 Thankyou, and yeah maybe.
Deffo... Team SF is always looking for runners :)
Agent Orange 09-08-2008, 17:22 Right, that is me officially entered for the race. Is anyone else sorted yet?
Kthebean 09-08-2008, 17:56 Can you let me know when your runners pack comes through please doc?
Agent Orange 09-08-2008, 18:20 Can you let me know when your runners pack comes through please doc?
Ok, will do. Not sure how long it will take, but I would imagine it wont be any longer than a week. Refresh my memory, have you already entered?
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 09:48 A guy at my gym has managed to wangle some free entries so he has entered on my behalf. Will check with him on monday... :suspect:
Agent Orange 10-08-2008, 14:37 Running for free... cant be bad. I had to pay for mine :(
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 14:44 Yeah it was a bit of luck really. Especially as I am broke at the mo! Is anyone any the wiser about what time it starts?
Agent Orange 10-08-2008, 14:48 Still not sure, but I guess it will be confirmed in the pack when that gets posted out.
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 14:59 Ah yes. The pack. As it happens I'm training right now (watching the olympics for important psychological boost) :D. The mental is just as important as the physical!

:hihi: I'm with you on that one. Olympics is really having a positive impact on my training :P
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 15:33 Team SF! Team SF!
:banana::banana::banana:
Agent Orange 10-08-2008, 15:36 Next will come the Team SF t-shirts :D :D
Next will come the Team SF t-shirts :D :D
Could be fun :)
But have you seen how hard it's been for the guys trying to organise forum badges?!!
Agent Orange 10-08-2008, 15:44 Could be fun :)
But have you seen how hard it's been for the guys trying to organise forum badges?!!
Yeah, I have. Simple solution... will nick Team GB's shirts and just get a marker and amend to show Team SF :D
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 15:46 Next will come the Team SF t-shirts :D :D
But then everyone would know my secret identity... :suspect:
I will be a covert member of the squad.

Only my secret life as a crack assassin for the Russian government.
Oh no, I've said too much..
Damn. :(
Do you know whether you're running yet, DaFoot?

He wont be now you have admitted that :hihi:
So, when is first training run?
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 16:09 I don't know, you're the one who's sickly. :P
I am pretty busy for the next coupla weeks- I think we should run the actual course 1-2 weeks before though.
Agent Orange 10-08-2008, 16:12 I'm not so bad now. I am starting my training tomorrow, but a group run a few weeks before the race sounds ideal. Not long left before the actual race now.

:o

Bloodyhell, need to get the training started otherwise we will be looking at 1 hour 55 not 55 mins :help:
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 16:45 I'm beginning to wonder if I rushed into this!
Oh well, I can always walk part of it if I don't have much time to prepare...
Agent Orange 10-08-2008, 16:51 No such thing as walking lol.
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 16:55 Well you'd best get running then hadn't you?! :P
Agent Orange 10-08-2008, 17:02 Im not sure I will be running too fast so I might as well be walking lol.
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 17:13 Apparently run/ walk programmes can sometimes yield better results than running the whole thing- e.g running at a decent pace for 5mins, then walking for 1 min, repeat til finish. I think it's supposed to be a quicker alternative to plodding the entire distance, because of the exertion/ rest balance! Not one for the elite athletes tho, obviously. :)

Oooo get you with your technical speak. Dont think there is any danger of me being classed as a elite athlete lol.

I once read a copy of Runner's World. So obviously I am now an expert! I have heard anecdotal evidence that it works though... :suspect:

It is true and would certainly be more productive to do that than try and run the whole thing especially with the limited time we have for training.
arachnophobe 10-08-2008, 17:54 It is true and would certainly be more productive to do that than try and run the whole thing especially with the limited time we have for training.
I'm fairly confident :suspect: I could jog the whole thing, as I was pleasantly suprised by my 5miler the other day. However it would be slow, so I may do the run/ walk thing just to get a vaguely decent time (for me). Plus the course does look unbelievably boring, which will make it seem harder!

Yes it does, but as I said we will be running as a group so that might make things a lot more pleasant.

Strange passing thought- what happens if you are last to finish a race? Do you get a booby prize? Has everyone gone home?
Not that I think any of us will be last, of course! There will be far too many people walking it for charity for that to happen, phew. ;)

Would have to be very slow to finish after everyone has gone home :hihi: Although, I quite like the idea of a wooden spoon :) Yeah, I reckon if we aim for the hour then we wont be getting no wooden spoon :D

Crawl around the course and I'm sure you will get to know ; :D

Feeling hopeful atm.
Plan to try a couple of Damflask laps this week, see how I feel. If it doesn't hurt too much then I will be doing the GYR.

Hey, i ran the Great yorkshire run last year, it was all along london road and abbeydale road then back into the city centre, not sure if it will be the same route this year.
Pretty straight forward although im not very active so took me a while last year, just over an hour!!
Feel free to sponsor me this year at www.runningsponsorme.org/jennifermanger
Thanks and might see ya there

Nope - city centre out along Penistone road to Wednesday ground and back.

Well, if you want.... you are more than welcome to join Team SF. Would be nice to have a small group to run with. Looks like we are aiming for similar times so the pace would be ok for this to work.
The group run thing is a nice idea, so far all my 10k runs have been a minute or two under the hour but I think I'll need the extra encouragement if I'm to manage that this time as training has been on hold for some time now :(
Really hoping these pains/injuries I'm carrying clear up soon.

I still have a chest infection to deal with so my training is a none starter. I hope it clears soon cos I want to be able to get a few weeks training under my belt, at least.
Agent Orange 15-08-2008, 15:11 We gonna get a date for our test run?
arachnophobe 20-08-2008, 11:25 Bumping up...
Myself and Agent Orange will be doing a trial run of the actual course sometime in the next couple of weeks. Anyone else is welcome to join us, just post here or send a PM and we will arrange a time to suit all. :)

Not looking good for the run.

Oh no... hope you make a speedy recovery. Looks like the 3 of us at the moment. Should be a decent run.
Kthebean 20-08-2008, 15:18 I'm here doc :)
Did 6k the other night on the treadmill and ended up a sweaty puffing mess. It doesn't bode well for my sub one hour goal. Plus I'm off for a weekend of debauchery at Shambala. Never mind I am just going to try my best and do it anyway. I have also entered the Leeds Abbey Dash which I did last year, that’s in November in anyone fancies it.

Oh mega... you will be ok with a little gentle persuasion on the day. I did my first run the other night and I looked far from healthy when I finished. Although, my timings were ok and if I keep that up then I should be aiming for 52 mins. Probably be a different story on the day though.
Oh, tell me more about the Abbey Dash?
... I have also entered the Leeds Abbey Dash which I did last year, that’s in November in anyone fancies it.
I did that one last year too... maybe I'll be in better shape for that!

Cheers for the link. I shall have a gander and consider it. I believe 10k is my better distance, not too long and not too short :D I certainly will try and be there cos I would like to get a few 10k's under my belt.
Agent Orange 22-08-2008, 09:43 Would Tuesday suit for the first trial run?
Update on injury status....
Did a short treadmill run last night (3km), while only mild pain in foot my chest really felt it! All this non-running over last couple of months has taken its toll :(
oasismark 22-08-2008, 10:24 Hi all.
I'm entered in the run, but picked up an injury and dont think i can make it now.
Can the entry be returned and refunded or can it be passed on?

As it's run as a commercial thing by BUPA I doubt very much they will refund it. As for passing it on, I can be sure the official answer will be no. For medical reasons you understand and nothing to do with wanting more entry fees ;) :hihi:

I believe for the Flora London Marathon you can defer your entry til the next year if you have an injury, not sure whether this applies to any other races though...
DaFoot, I think all of team SF will end up walking the way things are going! :)
arachnophobe 26-08-2008, 15:00 Is anyone up for a trial run in the next week or so then?
Agent Orange 26-08-2008, 15:35 Yes, I will be free to run this week (except for Friday) and will be free most days next week. Kthebean is around somewhere so I expect her to show her face at some point and confirm her attendance.

Ok I am fairly free as well, although Saturday might be out, so hopefully KtheBean and anyone else will be in touch and we can sort out a time.
Kthebean 26-08-2008, 15:45 Saturday is a no, any other day is fine, after work obviously.
Sunday?

That was quick! Sunday suits me.
Agent Orange 26-08-2008, 16:01 Sunday would suit me, but all that depends whether I get drunk on Sat night or not. Obviously, if I am heavily under the influence then I wont be in no fit state to run, but if I have quiet one then I will be good to go. This all depends whether I have can crash at a mates place so I should be able to inform you as soon as I know.
arachnophobe 26-08-2008, 17:41 Perhaps one night after work then?
Ousetunes 28-08-2008, 11:51 Can't be bothered to read through the entire thread but I was going to do the Bupa run a week on Sunday - a 10k run, I wouldn't even need to train - so I logged on to the website to find that entry cost £25.
Well, I'm not prepared to pay that so I might as well take myself off on a six miler around Redmires.
Agent Orange 28-08-2008, 18:22 Yes, it is a tad expensive I agree. Shame you wont be joining us on the day.
I got my gubbins (race number and chip) through the post today so I'm official now. Just need to work on the damn training :suspect: Speaking of which, I'm outta here for a 6 miler.
25 quid entry fee?
No thanks. I can run for free anywhere else
Its a shame though, that price...
arachnophobe 28-08-2008, 20:45 Crikey people like to whinge...
Although I did get a free entry so I'm lucky on that score. I'm sure the majority of entrants are running for charity, so the money they raise will far outweigh their entry fees. It does seem expensive compared to events I've entered in the past though.
Just went for a practise run. Tripped over a rock in Ecclesall Woods, went arse over tit and had to run all the way back home along the main road with muddy, scraped knees :(. No injuries fortunately, apart from my pride! :hihi:

agreed and how amny people spend over £25 on one night out where as this is the chance to raise money for charity while doing something you will probably remember for a long time.
Having done sheffield half marathon 4 times and rother valley and London triathlon these events are usually a great experience.

Indeed- it's a much greater sense of personal achievement than going for a run on your own, plus you are helping a good cause. Will you be running on the 7th Fudbeer?
Agent Orange 28-08-2008, 22:27 Did my 6 miler tonight, but I didnt perform any stunts though :D It's gonna be a interesting run on the day going on today's performance lol.

Your performance or mine?! :hihi:
It was a spectacular leap actually, quite similar to that of the flying squirrel, except they don't fall with a "splat" at the end :(.
The name "Team SF" certainly seems more appropriate now... :suspect:

I probably would but am currently in training for the Windsor Triathlon on the 14 th and its a little close:)

Yes that does seem a little close for comfort! Best of luck for Windsor though.

Thanks best of luck to you and indeed all the "team sf" runners.

If we combine your stunt antics with my slow motion running then it should make for a interesting time.
Is that like the A Team?
AO - how long did your 6 miler take?
Agent Orange 29-08-2008, 10:24 AO - how long did your 6 miler take?
About 54 minutes. It was a tad painful though and think on the day it will be around the same time, not longer cos of all the traffic.
arachnophobe 07-09-2008, 15:12 Race results are now on website: http://www.greatrun.org/index.asp
I got 52 mins 52 seconds, yay!
Well done to Agent Orange and Kthebean, and to anyone else who took part.
My dad did it :D
I'm so proud of him, 44 this month, needs hip replacements soon due to breaking both hips in the army 27 years ago and he's been working really hard because this is something he said he'd do 20 years ago!
He did it in 49 minutes, 8 seconds! Big Cheers for Lotti's Daddy!
My hubby did it 1hr 05 mins. All in all it was well organised, perhaps a bit tight at the start, but it may be more the Councils fault rather than the race organiser but why tell people to arrive early - the first group setting off at 9.30 - then NOT opening the car parks at 8.30 for people to get parked up !? His race didnt start until 10.00 but we arrived in town at 8.30 thinking the car parks will get full, only to find none of them open! We had to then drive back out from the way he had come and park outside Sheff Utd football ground. Good job that we decided to set off early. Then whilst walking back into town we decided to call at the public toilets at the bottom of the Moor, but along with quite a few others, found them closed, gated and padlocked. Good job the organisers had provided port a loos cos the ones at the Town Hall were also gated and padlocked. Come on Sheffield, get it right next time or this is something else we will be losing to the likes of Leeds !
I ran it and thought it was organised well. The warm up guy annoyed me as he did not seem to understand that there was a crowd of people shoulder to shoulder, and some of the exercises he was doing would have meant me smacking some guy in the chops.
The water station was badly organised though. What is the point of handing out full bottles of water. People took two sips and chucked the bottle, a waste of water and plastic. All it needed was a paper cup of water. It was a 10km race, not a marathon! Credit to the people on the station helping, but the Great Run organisers need to consider this waste.
Expensive (London Marathon cost me less) but there was a decent goody bag at the end!

I have a friend who did the run so he told me of the results page I saw your name on it and well done on your time of 01:01:06 :banana:.
I ran it in 57:54 and was really happy as it's my first race and I've never run more than 4 miles before! Well done to everyone! I agree about the wastage of water bottles, it was unnecessary.

My dad said exactly the same thing about the water.
There are a few snaps of the day here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ian-anderson/sets/72157607183345340/) if anyone is interested.
Agent Orange 22-09-2008, 16:29 Well done to all those who made it over the line on the day. And a very special well done to Arachnophobe and Kthebean!!
I really enjoyed this one, although I was a bit gutted that I didnt get around in the time I planned. The course itself, apart from the congestion in the first few Km's, and the last 800m climb, was great... lots of support and a few bands to keep us runners entertained. Hope to do it again next year, but I hope they move the starting position to somewhere more suitable. I mean, narrow streets arent particularly suited to house 6000 eager runners.
