View Full Version : Digital photography evening class
I have never done any photography in my life expect taking photos of me and my friends.
I would love to find a part time/eveing class in sheffield to learn how to take nice photos. I think i would enjoy taking wildlife and scenic photos.
Does anyone know of a course i could join that is for real beginers??
Thank you
The trouble with a lot of courses is that they are held in classrooms which gives little space & time to do any practical work.
If you just want knowledge to pass tests and are willing to put the work in your own time they are fine but you only realise mistakes when you next attend a class.
Check out the itinery of the course before you sign up just to make sure it is what you really want.
Good luck
thanks for the advice, i just want to be shown how to take a good photo and how to edit to make it even better, lol.
hi, there are quite a lot of info for free on the internet - this has quite a few tips etc for instance http://digital-photography-school.com/Digital%20Photography%20School.html
I've useda company called Going Digital - who rune classes on weekdns and the occasional weekday session.

electrolyte 12-08-2008, 21:58 I have just completed an A-Level in Photography at Hillsborough College which was excellent. The A Level is not aimed at the beginner but the GCSE that is run by the same teacher is. John Kerr, the photography tutor, is really good and he will teach you enough of the basics to get you out taking photographs in the week between lessons. You then show him your photos and he will offer advice on how to improve your techniques etc. Well worth doing.
Thanks electrolyte, that sounds just what im looking for.

You will need to go to an enrolment session at the college. See here for details (http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/index.cfm?pid=f2876617-d288-4667-8f9d-50b2d711ef14). If you can go on the Monday 18th session as John will probably be there. Bear in mind that it takes approx 2 hours to enrol so allow lots of time.
You can see more details about the GCSE here (http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/index.cfm?PID=eac44f4f-3f4d-44f7-919c-f135ed15ed7f&cmd=Course&Course=HEGPG1A). Don't worry about the reference to film, half the people on the course take film the other half are digital. But this course won't teach you anything about photoshop though. What it will do is teach you how to take good photos.
neeeeeeeeeek 13-08-2008, 12:22 What did you need to already know to do the A level?
Cheers

You need to already know how to take photos and understand f-stops, shutter speed etc. This won't be covered on the A-Level. You need to start with the A/S Level first and then progress to the A2 to get your A Level.
neeeeeeeeeek 14-08-2008, 07:25 So my basic grasp of F stops and shutter speeds which is only hindered by my poor memory will mean the A/S course will leave me bored? I am looking at doing it
:)
Trotterette 14-08-2008, 11:26 What about the GCSE? What prior knowledge do you need to have for that?
Am thinking of doing it but am a complete and utter beginner (dont know what an f-stop is??!!) (please dont mock me!!)
Is it necesary / worth reading up on the basics before starting or will the tutor teach me all I need to know for this level?

You should be fine with the GCSE but as I didn't do the course I can't be 100% certain.
Do you own an SLR or DSLR camera? If you don't you really should get one as although you can borrow a camera from the college they don't have a huge number and you are limited to how long you can borrow one for.
I would recommend that you read this book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Camera/dp/0817463003/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218831172&sr=8-1). It will teach you the basics about how exposure works.
Trotterette 17-08-2008, 17:36 Thanks very much,
Yes I own a Canon 450D DSLR - was told its a good 'un?!
I also bought myself the 'Starting Photography' book by Michael Langford which has the basics in about exposure etc...
Just dont want to be the dunce in the class! :(

Don't worry, you won't be the dunce of the class. A 450D is an excellent camera; I have a 350D which is older version of yours so yours will be perfect. I don't know the Michael Langford book but I would recommend you read the Bryan Petersen book as well. You can borrow it from the college library like I did if you want.
I'm a novice and have just signed up to a twelve week course at Sheff Uni on Thursday evenings. Hope its good, I'm really looking forward to it. Anyone know anything about it???? Its called introduction to digital photography.

I thought I'd do this this year then maybe the GCSE at Hillsborough next year!!!
If you're looking for a bargin though - I found a 10 week course run by Workers Education Association (think its a charity) at Firth Park college for £58, looks good its just a bit far for me to travel!

Is it an evening course?
Is it an evening course?
Both evening courses - the uni one is on Thursday's 19.30pm to 21.30pm. Can't remember what night the one at Firth Park is though (try searching on WEA website).
