View Full Version : Help - style advice - is my 70s carpet retro yet?
silverfish 26-04-2005, 11:37 My kitchen/dining room has a 70s carpet, it’s got geometric patterns in shades of brown and gold (not at all swirly), all my friends say it's really vile but we're all over 35! - they say I should get some plastic laminate flooring. But I’m hoping my carpet will soon be the ultimate in designer chic, how much longer must I wait?
Well, I just checked the weather channel, and hell still hasn't frozen over, so keep waiting!
One word, ew!
Dude, do the tasteful thing & lose it. You could always get it cleaned, roll it up & put it in storage for the (potentially) happy day when it becomes trendy enough to ebay to some numpty for ££££
**edit Or let Snook fire it from his catapult?

You're having a laugh aint ya! come on own up you really haven't got a carpet like that have you? HONEST :D :D :D
StarSparkle 26-04-2005, 12:01 I wouldn't hold your breath .....
Then again though, you never know what might come back into fashion - I was in town trying to do some clothes shopping yesterday, and seriously thought I'd fallen through a time-warp! There was nothing to buy but horrible browny 70s styles that we were so relieved to get rid of the first time around when the 80s came along.
Honestly, I was so disoriented I was looking round, half-expecting to see my best friend of my school years, rifling her way through the stacks of peasant smock tops. Funny how I associate her totally with that style of clothing.
Mind, she was 5 foot 8, and so had a reasonable chance of carrying off that look. The dumpy peasant look was never my best..... :suspect:

Hehe, somebody got it! (You can believe I have one, because it's against reason)
I'd be happy to do the honours. :)
ring changing rooms- im sure the smarmy git lewyellin bowen(sp) could do something with it!!!
(wrap himself up in it and push himself off a large hill springs to mind)
silverfish 26-04-2005, 12:10 You had me laughing out loud, - stuck at home with the lurgy, isn't the Forum great for getting cheered up. Owdlad - I just don't think you're young enough to comment on this carpet, I need opinions from under 25-year-olds. Have also got a pale blue 1980s spotty/flower sprigs carpet on the stairs which just hasn't got as much oomph as the kitchen one. ‘spose I've got to ditch them both, (or give out dark glasses at the door)
Sorry I didn't get Snook's catapult thing . . .
BoppinBruce 26-04-2005, 12:13 Aint much on ya carpet, but whats ya lino like round the outside and can we tot on it?
silverfish 26-04-2005, 12:40 BoppinBruce - even I know lino is back in fashion! and sadly I haven't got any, just some manky vinyl tiles. Anyone know a good laminate floor fitter?
BoppinBruce 26-04-2005, 13:19 Aint there no one being bump off in a soap opera that needs a carpet to wrap the body up in?
You could be up for a few quid profit
carpets in kitchens are just wrong full stop!
maybe somewhere else in the house but it would have to go in a room with neutral walls and furniture and anything else. i imagine it might work better as a rug m'dear.
silverfish 26-04-2005, 13:35 Thanks Melanie - practical advice. Actually it's already in one of the bedrooms with white walls and Goldie curtains but doesn't look much better. I agree with you about carpets and kitchens but it really does hide the crumbs remarkably well!
Sorry Strix, no pix at the momen - if you could imagine the bottoms of Hexagonal bottles in about four shades of Brown/yellow
Draggletail 26-04-2005, 13:45 Everytime you throw something old out, about a year later it comes back into fashion. It's sods law.
Look around you, in the shops, 'home' style type mags - BROWN IS BACK and textures are 'in' wether you like it or not.
I should know after recently decorating the house - loads of wrangles with mrs Draggle about the use of browns:(
Don't throw it out:D
Sheffette 26-04-2005, 14:44 Check out 20th Century Style and Pad on London Road and Bullet on Sharrowvale Road. Amazing! Tons of cool 70s stuff, G Plan sofas and those 70s coffee sets which are now very fashionable. 70s is back in - honestly.
Authentic 70s stuff is becoming very collectable and prices are going up. We've got a couple of antiques guides in the shop where I work devoted to 20th century furnishings and all I can say is if you have any 70s stuff hang onto it - it'll be worth a hefty amount fairly soon.
BTW , I think your carpet sounds fantastic!
My mum use to have the painting of the exoctic spanish looking lady - there was also a green lady. Apparently they are worth a bit now so you never know that carpet might end up being swooned over by Dave Dickinson one day!
