View Full Version : Crookes working men's club
Bolehill 04-08-2008, 19:56 Does anyone know what Crookes working men's club has to offer these days? And do you have to be a member to go? And, if so, how do you become a member? I've heard rumours of dance classes and bands, but don't know how to find out about it.
How about this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkFjMLoZ5n0) for a start?

Hey thanks Pete! Can't approve of him asking for a pint of lager though. Surely they've got some real brews?
al_partridge 04-08-2008, 21:04 And do you have to be a member to go?
The club got shut down a few years back for letting non-members in.
And when it reopened they kept the same doorman in the job, d'oh!
laineyiow 04-08-2008, 21:34 When I lived in Sheffield I used to go twice a week to Crookes WMC to modern jive. I believe they still have it there on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I remember having to pay a fee every year to the club but think it was only about £5 for the year or something like that. The admission fee for dancing is about £7.00 per evening.
prettygood 05-08-2008, 09:29 They also have a function room at the back that you can hire. I hired it for a works social about two years ago. I think they charged us £35 for the night.
:)

pippadoll 05-08-2008, 16:33 A couple of friends and myself were kicked out of the club for talking during the bingo, it was surreal, from another era.
Bolehill 05-08-2008, 20:42 Thanks for your input guys. I guess I'll give them a ring and avoid bingo night!
Do they still do Open the Box and a prize of two bags of shopping for a full house at Bingo?
andrejuan 23-01-2010, 16:37 This thread didn't go far first time round, I'm gonna restart it in the hope there is now more info available.
sheffandy 23-01-2010, 17:09 May be a good idea to PM sheffield forum member called P.Lonsdale , he is a respected Crookes WMC member and has been going in there since before I was born! He should be able to point you in the right direction.
I'm not sure, but I'm sure at the moment it is 'subs' time where you can pay/join up. These times are Sunday lunchtimes and Wednesday evenings. Just ask the guys on the door and they will show you where to sign up.

It's £6. I go every week. It's fantastic. Always packed..on both nights.
Jack's Rake 23-01-2010, 17:23 There are bands on in the main bar room on Thursdays. Membership requirements are relaxed on these evenings. I'm told the second Thursday of the month is the best one....
remyrobson 23-01-2010, 21:24 parking is always a nightmare, you can always tell there's a good night on by the lack of parking spaces within a 1 mile radius.
poppycat 24-01-2010, 02:02 Going to crookes club is probably the only thing we miss about not living at crookes anymore . Today it's exactly 14 years since me and my o/h got back together and we had some great nights courting in the club as we only lived on stannington view . Is the lady that use to run it still there, i've forgotten her name. i sometimes walked home from school with her when she picked her grandkids up
Try 3rd thursday of the month a great irish band Shamrock ,very good night well worth seeing.
Jack's Rake 24-01-2010, 16:59 Rather than get into a slanging match with lindi over which Thursday is best, I'd like to humbly suggest you go EVERY Thursday!
Albert's Skiffle Band, on the first Thursday, are something to behold ... Jack's Rake, on the second Thursday, are "one the liveliest and most loved folk bands around", The mighty Shamrock appear on the third Thursday and I don't know who appears on he fourth but, given the quality of the other acts, I assume they're great too!
Rememember ... membership is not required on Thursdays.
Classic Northern Soul and Motown featuring Wigan Casino's Russ Winstanley 12 November 2010 Crookes Club, Sheffield, S10 1TD £4.00 on the door 0114 2660114 for further details or queries. Ask for Chris.
