Don't know if anyone's suggested anything along these lines, yet ... just seemed to me to be a good idea.

A new trophy, named after Dooley, to be awarded as "bragging rights" between the Owls and Blades.

If the teams are playing each other in the same division, then it goes to the aggregate winner over two legs (or three/four legs, if cup ties turn up).

If they aren't, but get drawn against each other in cups, then it goes to the winner of the cup tie(s).

If they don't play each other all season, then a "friendly" pre-season game the following July/August decides the holder.

Any thoughts? (On the idea, not on who'd win the trophy! :hihi:)

Alternatively, the trophy could just be up for grabs every time they play a competitive match, so that it might change hands during a season if both teams win at home.

Sounds like a good idea but might it be better if it was always held pre-season and the gate goes to charity?

It would have its advantages in that respect, but a pre-season game would never count for bragging rights if we're playing each other in the league.

I was thinking of something akin to the Calcutta Cup .. England play Scotland as part of a league competition, but the winners of the game get a trophy for it.

Isn't the game between England and Germany Legends for the Derek Dooley Cup? Sure someone has mentioned that before.

The game's got his name attached to it in some context - that's what sparked this idea in me, though I'm sure I won't have been the first person ever to have it.

I agree with Heyesey again. It'd be Sheffield football's equivalent of the 'Ashes'.
Top idea!

daft idea. dooley loved wendy and look what they did to him. he did'nt want to go back to the sty but harry bassett persuaded him. so only went back when the blades played there. be much better to organise some tournament for schools who appreciated the work he did.
