myriadmike 04-08-2008, 08:46 PM Hi there everyone, I'm looking for a small function room, preferably city centre for my friend Craig, who plays really amazing folk/country stuff under the name Oldseed.
i put on gigs regularly but not acoustic as much, so using the usual venues like the Casbah, Grapes etc wouldn't really suit his style (and my pocket at the moment).
I put him on before at the Red House on Solly Street and it was fantastic, but they have an Open Mic night there every Wednesday so thats taken up. I had a good amount of people down last time and was able to pay him quite a bit so an Open Mic isn't really suitable, he tends to play full sets and may well be brining his accordion playing partner with him this time.
I tried the Red Deer, as this would have been perfect but that too is booked, the date is unmoveable really as its part of his tour.
If people have any suggestions, please let me know, smaller and more intimate the better.
His myspace address is http://www.myspace.com/oldseed if you want to have a listen.
myriadmike 04-08-2008, 08:47 PM Oh and he doesn't need a PA system either.
geek_andy 04-08-2008, 08:50 PM Have you tried Bar Abbey?

myriadmike 04-08-2008, 08:52 PM I would love to use it, but its £100 to hire.
EdnaKrabappe 04-08-2008, 10:14 PM What about Green room? not sure what they are doing these days but still putting gigs on.
Ghostrider 05-08-2008, 04:38 AM So I assume by your first post that you would want to charge an entry fee....
myriadmike 05-08-2008, 11:53 AM Yeah, either that or the pub would have to stump up enough cash for him, I'd get people down either way!
Bluwaterbob 06-08-2008, 12:05 AM when do you want him to play?

Ruskins....................
Why not try the Dronfield Music Festival this weekend. Loads of pub landlords go along. You might catch someone's eye.
Alternatively try the Cross Scythes at Totley. They have a regular music slot as does the Castle on Twentywell Ave.
myriadmike 06-08-2008, 11:41 AM Using the Red House on the 16th now, thanks everyone for suggestions but turned out he had a free slot on his tour the next night.
Tyranna 06-08-2008, 07:55 PM A very good suggestion is the SHAKESPEARE, on Gibraltar St. near Shalesmoor/West Bar; it is very acoustic-friendly, has some real ales, and I held a couple of Acoustic/World Music nights in June as part of the GALA Gay Arts festival. Downstairs is perfect for a small crowd, but they also have a huge room upstairs which can be hired for extremely affordable rates, and can hold, I think, as many as 100. There is also a small car-park right next to the pub, although I am not sure if it is public pay and display or what.
Just ask Jeff the manager about organising an acoustic gig, and say Tyranna recommended the venue!

I didn't know about this open mic night, is it good?
Good luck to your mate!
myriadmike 09-08-2008, 06:11 PM Thanks to everyone who suggested places, but he is now booked at the Red house on the 16th.
No thanks to West Street Live who chose to contact him about doing a show for them on the 15th, I thought that was low.
