sounds like somethings blown. You going to need to tell us what lights are flashing and the sequence.
well its just the little light on the front thats on when its charging, it just flashes about 3times and thats it, was fine this morning
What is the make and model of it? How old is it? It could be your power adapter.
compaq presario v5000,little over 2 years old
the original charger went, got a new charger about 8 months ago worked perfectly,

Is it the same symptoms as the last time the charger went? (sorry I'm not familiar with compaqs). But I think for that light to be flashing it suggests the charger unit. Have you tried it with the charger out and the battery in and vice versa?
no, the last charger got quite worn and stuttered a bit towards the end of its lifespan,no worries, your help is much appreciated,
yeah, both way rouind it still wont come on
fred_notdead 04-08-2008, 17:52 Can you run your laptop from the mains after taking the battery out?
Some laptops won't work at all when the battery is old and depleted, but after removing the battery they're fine to run from the mains.
Might be worth a try?
.
ive tried to run it just from the mains but wont work at all
sneaking suspision your motherboard may have gone in that case
ah,
would there be any warning signs for this or is it sudden?

Sudden. Usually (could b worng) caused by dust. But there can be lots of other factors if that's the case your best bet is putting it on ebay for parts and buying a new lappy. Boards (+ fitting) are expensive. What ever you decide I can help you out at a reasonable cost. I'm just not too good at diagnosing compaq issues as to be honest I mainly deal with toshibas, fujitsu siemens and hp and rarely see have to diag much else.
pixellated 04-08-2008, 21:25 sounds like the charger or charging socket to me, flashing lights with the battery in usually means the battery is dead and nothing with the ac in and no battery means no power , i'd say it's most likely the adapter as if it was the dc socket it would more than likely have been a gradual failure
i'd take it to a shop and see if the have a charger that would fit it to check it
