Should I go and have a trip of a lifetime or find go another time at a cheaper price?

Still not a bad price! I'd still go!

You could probably get it cheaper... but only slightly!

i think £400 is expensive (for 6 nights?) esp as flights there are quite cheap due to general fear of repeat attacks.

on the flip side when will you ever get to go with such a big group of like minded people - it could be a real laugh.

when i was on your course i went to dublin one year (stayed in a complete dump hostle) and then to paris (beautiful b&b) when there was some spare places another year.

you end up talking to people in your year that you would perhaps never get round to meeting otherwise.

then again esp if you have particular places you want to visit, your social group could end up being very small for convience (i mean 20 of you can't very well hang out all day and night, its not workable).

cheapest flight's at the moment going for £180 + airport tax (RTN). Hostel for 6 nights... about $15-20 per night. So yes it is pretty expensive, but again you are going with people who are like minded. Staying in a decent hotel in NYC for 6 nights could easily cost you £600 or more! So it aint all bad!

I suppose it depends if you can afford it.

Sounds decent value not to mention opportunity. Go for it.

I stayed in the YMCA (yes, the one from the song) and it was £70 per night - very expensive. So £400 for a week including accom is dead cheap. Can I come?

Seems like a good opportunity to me also, but if I had the choice I would go in summer. New York in January could be very chilly / Wet or Snowy. But then that could add to the fun.
