View Full Version : Sheffield United, best meat pies you can get?
BoppinBruce 26-04-2005, 06:11 Watching Coro last night, sorry never made the funeral Owdlad, it was mentioned that the best meat pies on sale were at Sheffield United. I have never had one, can somebody substantiate the fact and tell me what they are like?
Ousetunes 26-04-2005, 06:24 It's been a long, long time since I had one, but I recall two things:
1 - indeed they were quite tasty; and
2 - 80% always ended up on the Kop floor. They always used to collapse in your fingers.
I wonder who showed the writers of Coronation Street a map of Sheffield? Or maybe they got the script wrong?
I don't - by nature - watch the garbage, incidentally.
Coronation Street, that is!
msbehavin 26-04-2005, 06:34 I've heard that the meat pie beofre the game is the best thing about going to a SUFC match and that it all goes downhill from thereon....:hihi:

I used to save the meat pie till half-time, give me something to look forward to.
Chances are, I would have been back home come 3.15 otherwise.
United pies should be nice.
There's plenty of PORK On the kop to use :heyhey: :heyhey:
*Waits for abuse off unite ites *
My dad would always give us his favourite joke if there was cheering coming from Bramall Lane on matchdays
"Ah, the pies have arrived!"

Hang your head in shame :( you missed a good "doo" although a certain member who should be ashamed of himself viking did rather blot his copy book, as for the meat pies :gag: :gag: :gag:
The official title of the best pie goes to my club Rochdale. Of the 2000 crowd 1800 just go for the pies, the other 200 are away fans.
The pies there are amazing and do provide a welcome break from the football. ;)

Had the pleasure of visiting Spotland some years back (with, ahem, York City).
Your pies might be the best (but I didn't try one) but your ground makes Sandygate (Hallam Football Club) look like the new Wembley.
(Okay, so it did then; it's probably better now!)
Clockedit 28-04-2005, 17:57 As a life long sheffield utd fan I would love to say that they sell the best pies. Unfortunatly, best I've ever had were at Wigan, although the atmosphere was shocking as you can't have a laugh when the you can count the attendance on one hand!
The best pies have to be Norwich City, Delia personally makes them, throws in a bit of pepper and cheerleading at half time.

Look at this United-ite when he found out he had got the last pie. Happy United-ite (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/viking99/forums/unitedite.jpg)

Not so long ago (probably when you went) one of the stands was a small hill. Since then its had 3 new stands and it looks ok now.
patchalan 29-04-2005, 12:25 You can,t play football with a meat pie, or can you?

And I'm sure you hate Delia, as 'best pie' is the only thing Dale have won since arriving in the league .....
I thought the best was Rotherham, and the worst Barnsley (always frozen still)?

oh man, your not an owl are you, heres me thinking respect to this guy:hihi:

you mean you actually managed to get served one?? jesus, and on the kop too?
10,000 fans, 8 pies. Thats what i seem to have noticed!
Plain Talker 25-11-2006, 09:47 My Owls-supporting brother-in-law always looked forward to the pies at Bramall Lane, when he joined us for the Sheffield Derbies, he was adamant that the Lane served the best pies.. (odd, that, as I believe the same company supply the pies for both clubs... )
I don't know about "aunty Delia's" pies at Norwich being the best... when we went there a couple of seasons ago, we had the pies, and they were absolutely DIRE :gag: vile, vile, vile! (then again the trip to the Canaries' ground was a disaster all-round, the disabled seating area was awful, the view was terrible, no space, you were stacked in:- first in, last out, and all that- we were enclosed in a glassed box, which was dreadfully claustrophobic, and to cap it all, one of the home fans "mesed" themselves, and their so-called "attendant" left them all the match like that, we were :gag:ging at the stench.)
sorry, back on track:- Preston North End's ground, Deepdale, IMO had the nicest pies, at an away match. They even had a restaurant, at the ground, where you could get pie and peas. The veggie option was this delicious "butter" pie, with potatoes and onions, with thick gravy. MMMMM!
Judging by Paddy Kenny's ever expanding girth the pies must indeed be as good as those at Hillsborough when Kevin Pressman was pie - eater (I mean goal keeper).
40summat 25-11-2006, 14:55 I can't say i've tried them all (looking at me you'd think i had) but the famous 'Killie pie' from Kilmarnock is tops, a propper steak pie with rich gravy.
They come in their own little blue and white striped box (or did when i was there) and are made by Brownings.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Patrick Kenny had actually lost about 2 stone since his team were promoted to the Premiership?

His eyebrow didn't weigh that much surely.
magic_rat 01-12-2006, 10:00 I think you will find rotherham utd have the best meat pies, the first club in the country to go pukka, and the best..... Sheffu's pale in comparison, dry, far too much pastry and not enough filling..............

Apart from they don't do any good ones like chicken balti. Think the last time I went to Carrow Road, 'Delia's special' was something daft like asparagus and mango. :gag:
BasilRathbon 01-12-2006, 11:30 At my club Hereford United, we had a birthday celebration last week; one of the pies in the refreshments stall was 21!

Yeah, they're great! They even made it onto a foodie programme the other year (I think it was 'Food and Drink').
You could always go to the other side of the country and have a Forfar Bridie, of course .......
