View Full Version : Has anyone been to Creswell Crags?
LoopyLou 26-04-2005, 05:57 This is a place not far from me, yet in the 30 odd years I've lived in sheffield, I've never been.
It was on the news (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/4476303.stm) at the weekend because they have used scientific methods to date the cave art for the first time.
Is it worth a visit ?
What is there ?
How long to get round and see everything?
Loopy.
Its great.. if you have an intrest in that kind of thing.. prehistoric landscape just as it allways has been , theres a small visitor centre and they do guided tours of some of the caves I think sunday is the best day for the tours . infact a few of the regular hangers around in town would look very at home bashing a few lumps of flint together outside a cave !
Is it worth a visit? - not really
What is there? - not much, a visitors centre, a cave with bars across it, a pond and a sewage works.
How long to get round? - not very long, it depends how far you stroll past the cave entrance, but when I was there ( a few years ago) the smell from the sewage works was quite overpowering.
LoopyLou 26-04-2005, 07:35 Slight difference in opinion so far
Any other comments ?
karenjane39 26-04-2005, 07:55 Went with my daughter's school a few years ago, both parents and kids were bored rigid!
give it a couple of years - they've just been given a massive grant to do the place up - it will supposedly be loads better.
having said that, I havent been there myself, so it might already be quite good now.
Interesting place but wouldn't take more than an hour and half to visit (unless you go in summer when you can take a picnic and enjoy it in the grounds).
The site is extremely important historically and is about to apply for World Hertitage Status....and there ain't many places got that.
Go at weekends and they do cave tours but you need to book to get a place.
More info here (http://www.creswell-crags.org.uk/)
spiffymonkey 26-04-2005, 09:50 If you take the tour, it's worth it for the kids. My kids loved it. However, if you don't take the tour you may as well not bother.
Charlie01 26-04-2005, 11:33 Hi this is a good site to get a feel for the place

have fun!
I've never been but my mum and dad took my 5 year old son a few weeks ago and he - and they - thought it was fantastic. He's been doing ice age cave paintings ever since. (On paper, rather than in ice age caves I hasten to add.)
super_pie 26-04-2005, 16:21 I used to go often as a kid and nothing was better than trying to climb up the crags and into the caves. Infact thinking back I used to climb almost stright up the rock faces. Most of the caves are off-limits now, but man I used to have some fun........
bigflesh 26-04-2005, 19:39 I once went, getting on for about 10 years ago now and actually went in the caves - very very tiny caves involving being on all 4's. At some points squeezing through tiny crevices. It was an organised tour. Not sure if they still do them.
Depends what you like as to how interesting you'll find it.
It's a couple of years since i last went and while it isn't the most exciting place in the world, it's ok to pass an hour or so on a weekend.
Went a few years ago, me, the missus and three kids. Not too impressed!
Took the tour first, one cave with a few artifacts, and the guide had the most boring 'lecture' voice I've ever heard. Droned on for what seemed like hours, and never really said anything. Too many people on tour and squashed into small area to be able to see what he was pointing out.
Walked around area afterwards and saw no more than 'barred off' holes.
Usually very interested in paleantology, archeology and history, but on this occasion I (and the family) were bored rigid.
Wouldn't go again, but some may enjoy it.
bigflesh 27-04-2005, 20:20 The Devils Arse in Castleton is a good one to get down.

BORRRRRRRIIIIIINNNNG.
Only go there if you want something to help you drop off.
LoopyLou 28-04-2005, 05:08 Thanks for all the replies.
Such a mixed response.
I think I may pop along for a bit of a look around, as it's on the doorstop (nearly).
Cheers
