Estikutum at Attercliffe is an all you can eat Indian. It also has some chinese/thai food but when I went it seemed to be mainly Indian. It's pretty nice and a lot better than the only other 'all you can eat' Indian ive been to in Sheffield (Cha Chi's) but this has shut down now anyway.

There was no alcohol licence when I went about six months ago so that's a drawback.

Estikutum now has an alcohol licence. The food is pretty good, especially if you stick to the 'indian' side of things.

They handed out a questionnaire when I went and one of the questions was about whether you thought they should serve booze. More likely to go back now then.

I didn't try much of the chinese/thai stuff but it seemed to be about 80%- 90% Indian food anyway. Poppadoms were free when I went and they made the naan breads in front you as well.

I usually like a beer or two with spicy food but, strangely, I quite liked the atmosphere in the old, alcohol-free, Estikutum. This was mainly due to the mix of people using it (many families, from all kinds of different backgrounds, on my early evening visits) and a pleasant hum of conversation and laughter. I wonder if the presence of alcohol will put some people off using the place and might also raise the noise levels and lower the standards of behaviour? Not that I would probably notice after a couple of beers.......

Ive gone onto their site and the opening hours are 5pm - 10pm so I don't think there will be any problems with the serving of booze in regards to there being bad behaviour etc. I think any problems would be people coming in drunk rather than getting drink in there and even then I reckon it would be 12-1 ish if it was going to happen. I think even Friday/Saturday nights there would be no bad behaviour - maybe more couples than people with kids.

I like a few pints when going out for food especially if ive been boozing before as well. The majority of people don't cause any problems in curry houses and I think the 10pm closing should pretty much stop it anyway - the other all you can eat Indian I went to, Cha-Chis, had a licence 'til about 11 and I never saw trouble or rowdiness in there.

I hadn't stayed away from estikutum 'cos it didn't serve booze but if I was going to choose between an alcohol free and an alcohol serving place I would choose the latter as long as the food was still good. I looked at the booze list on their site and they've gone from one extreme to the other now - I was expecting a couple of different lagers, bitter and a few different bottles of wine but they sell different spirits, different varieties of spirits and cocktails as well as the lager etc.

Don't bother with the Amraj, if your idea of an Indian Restaurant is plasma tv's on the walls, microwaved overpriced rubbish and big question mark over the cleanliness of the place you'll be ok, but otherwise I'd stay away. The only place I've been where they add a 15% service charge to a buffet?:gag:

are you on commisson ?

Ha Ha no Panda79...im trying to promote my business..i only set up 4 weeks ago and am situated on a bit of a back alley (Dorking st) off carlisle st next to Church on the Rock.
Therefore i am trying to do some promo work as cost effectivly and best i can think of.
As you can see i have never tried to make out it to be anything other than promotion and gaining publicity for what i think is a new conceopt in lunch time eating ,never seen before in Sheffield.
As i allways make clear i am inviting you my place to try...never do i come across as making a reccomendation and attempt to ramp up the CURRY CANTEEN.
I ofcourse also invite you to come and visit us and try for yourself.
After some initial experimentation we have revised our opening hours to Mon to Fri 12 - 6pm.
I know someone else did start a thread entitled CURRY CANTEEN ,i promise you it was totally independent of CURRY CANTEEN staff.

Not only no alcohol, but they won't even let you bring your own bottle as it's teetotal.

The other poster says you can get booze in their now though. I looked on their site and their is loads of choice, different cocktails, wine, spirits, lager and beer.

It was a major drawback when I went there. I disagree with the other poster saying booze might bring the place down. Pints are mint with curry or any food especially if you've been drinking beforehand. Most people don't cause trouble in Indians and this place shuts pretty early.

If you own a business you want to make as much cash as possible. An Indian selling booze is going to make more than one not I reckon. Even if you could only take your own in it would still make more money than if you couldn't.

Sheffield's Indian and Sri Lankan populations are very small so I am not surprised at this. The vast majority of south Asians in Sheffield are Pakistani -the Indian population in England is mainly in the middle and south of England. Most curry houses in Sheffield are Pakistani run but Pakistani food is similar to Indian as Pakistan was part of India until 1948 and there are differences between east Indian, west Indian etc. food as well.

While I think it is good to have variety I think most people will only be attracted to this place if the food is actually good. I won't ask your opinion as all of your previous posts are in relation to South Indian food so I would guess you work there/have a connection with the place. What is this place called and does it have a site?

It was hardly putting people off, we've been regularly on a Saturday night (before they started selling alcohol) and it's been packed, it's never been a problem for us.

Some people wouldn't go to an Indian if it didn't sell booze (or allow your own) but I doubt anyone wouldn't go because it did sell booze. Indian's aren't really hotbeds for drink-fuelled trouble and I prefer a drink with a curry as do many people.

I agree with your other post that Estikutum is good but I have only been once.

I know another poster said it sold booze earlier in the thread. I looked on the site and they sell all sorts of booze. I like a pint with my curry but am not sure about cocktails or double brandys - each to their own though.

just to clarify a bit. southindian food is totally different to the traditional indian food available in UK. Its food is mainly Dosa, Idly, Vada, Kottu Roti, pittu etc.. secondly i dont have any connection with this place, however i love this food which previously was only available either in london or leicester.
