How about this for breaking news! About 5 minutes ago a tram smashed in to the back of a bus on West Street. It appears 2 other cars were also involved and possibly a van. The front of the tram is completely smashed and the back engine door of the bus virtually ripped away.

Not sure of any injuries, but police and ambulances are now there. Also a fire engine was arriving - I think they are being careful with the removal of a person from one of the cars.

Well done Geoff, exellent pics and very good reporting, this is what this forum is all about, quick responsive activity happening on our door steps.
Nice to see Rockingham house opposite.
Does anyone remember the tax office being there in the 70s.

I was on a tram that crashed on Ridgeway Road (nr Gleadless Townend) a fair few months ago. The whole front corner got trashed then. They dont seem to be built very sturdy.

There were one or two injuries which I dont think were fatal!

From those pictures that looks like impact speed of about 5-10 mph.

I was on a tram in Melbourne (Oz) which crashed into a VW beetle doing a u-turn in front of it. Fortunately for the driver his car had a racing-type rollcage fitted otherwise he'd have been toast or minus a limb at least. Side completely stoved in. Tram suffered absolutely no damage at all - much smaller glass frontal area than the newer Sheffield ones.

Personally I think trams are fantastic and the only regret is that they don't go as far as Ecclesfield where we live, and we have to suffer the No75/76 bus into town. Meadowhall tram is handy though....

In the printed newspaper, they've used one of Geoff's photos, and mentioned the forum in the caption.
