Well done to Steve on getting his Purple belt from Lagarto today and also Mark on his blue.
That makes 3 purple belts at GB Sheffield

Well done to Steve - after four years of beating me up- purple very well deserved. Really pleased for Mark as well; a blue belt to add to his judo black belt. You're next Gregg  Noel

What's the difference between ?Gi and No Gi classes please?

as simple as it sounds, gi you wear a gi and there are more submissions and control, no gi you wear shorts and a tee, no gi is a little harder in my opinion as you dont have as much control.

your welcome to come down and try both, or just watch.

thanks gregg

I find gi is better for old people like myself; little bit slower, more anchors. Plus it gives you the benefit of gi chokes which are my favourite thing. :hihi: Noel

How long have you been going Noel? I'm quite interested, having read a book about the sport, but rather apprehensive about being a total beginner..............

Been training BJJ for almost four years; with a background of many years judo. I had to pack the judo in due to injury but there's not the same impact in BJJ and I get to keep the competitive element which I enjoy. Give it a go! Noel

Noel- quick question for you.

How fit do you need to be to do BJJ and also is it complicated to learn as sometimes when I've seen the techniques explained on the net it looks pretty complicated and detailed. So what I'm asking is how hard is it to pick up?

Any thoughts you have would be great to hear.

Hi Jebb, you can be fit and still struggle in BJJ as you use slightly different muscles to fight and move on the ground from stand up and being put in unfamiliar positions means you tend to 'gas' fairly quickly. Like any physical activity once you do it for a little while it gets easy and when you learn to relax in BJJ it gets a thousand percent easier.

In terms of flashy moves there are different styles of BJJ; if you look at someone like Roger Gracie he uses very basic and simple jiu jitsu that makes him the best in the world, others are great at the acrobatics. It's all about learning and tweaking the basics and principles of BJJ (which anyone can learn) then adding things on, depending on age, body type etc. But, you'll drill things thousands of times, then find what works in sparring for you and most of the time it's not the holywood stuff. As I say, give it a go! Cheers, Noel
