View Full Version : Train drivers to strike over pay viking 25-04-2005, 14:39 24 HR stoppages planned HERE (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/derbyshire/4481931.stm) Strix 25-04-2005, 14:48 Midland Mainline staff are walking from London St Pancras to Sheffield, out for three days via Beds, Northants, and the East Midlands??? The BBC are getting very sloppy  tom_a_west 25-04-2005, 16:12 Originally posted by Strix  The BBC are getting very sloppy  You mean that they werent to start off with? :surprised: On a serious note It doesnt surprise me in the slightest, this is why all the motorways are jammed packed already. The trains are cr@p, so it wont affect that many people anyway. Mind you, the real miracle is when they actually arrive on time to start off with. Wasnt MM voted the worst railway company in britain only last year? If you want to go to london, it wont be that bad because you can just lose 10 mins travelling to doncaster Strix 25-04-2005, 16:16 Train journeys are at their highest since the 1950's (when nobody owned cars) Everybody travels more. How many people live near work these days? And if a couple have careers, it's often the only solution to live within an hours travelling distance of each office in opposite directions Don_Kiddick 25-04-2005, 18:43 But they are already extremely well paid and have very flexible working hours! I looked into this as an option for a change of career 2 years ago when I was ready for leaving the NHS! nightrider 25-04-2005, 18:53 Originally posted by Don_Kiddick But they are already extremely well paid and have very flexible working hours! I looked into this as an option for a change of career 2 years ago when I was ready for leaving the NHS! They have the luxury of being able (and do) to hold the country to ransom, so no doubt their pay will become even more generous. fergal 25-04-2005, 19:07 good on the train drivers. they need to stand up for what they beliefs in. im sure most sheffielders will agree with me. t020 25-04-2005, 19:19 Despite trains being privatised it seems the train drivers still hold the belief that they can hold the country to ransom in the quest to satisfy their own greed. Train drivers already get paid around £32k a year - this is quite a lot for most jobs but especially a relatively unskilled one that doesn't require too much in the way of qualifications. Even when training to become a driver, they still get paid generously. fergal 25-04-2005, 19:22 £32k per year are you serious? if so then im in the wrong job nightrider 25-04-2005, 19:24 Originally posted by fergal good on the train drivers. they need to stand up for what they beliefs in. im sure most sheffielders will agree with me. what exactly do they believe in? greed? wrecking other peoples weekends? They already earn far more than me (as much as 32k according to t020). Why should they get a 4.5% increase? I am not getting one. It simply isnt fair that they can keep increasing their pay through strike action. I cant (and neither can many others) bring the country to a halt by walking off work. I am a student and a month ago I was safely in a job to help me through college. Now I have redundancy charging ever closer and have been denied EMA on a technicality, even some of my friends who get it deserve it less than me. One gets the full amount and lives at both his parents houses, as well as one of his parents villas in spain during the holidays. This really sounds like someone that needs £30 a week for doing less than most. Oh the poor train drivers, they must really deserve our sympathy. the threat of unemployment looms greatly over their shoulders. |
