United are among more than half the clubs in the top two divisions of English football reporting buoyant season ticket sales despite gloomy economic forecasts and spiralling costs. And they are ahead of their South Yorkshire rivals with sales at Barnsley currently standing at 8,500 and 8,000 at newly promoted Doncaster Rovers.
Sales for Sheffield Wednesday were not reported.

Yeah, because the blades have had 18k seasonticket holders EVERY year, haven't they?

It's only 8 years since your season's average gate, including away fans, was 13,700 - wow, such a loyal fanbase.

Fickle football fans, we've all got em, we had em 8yrs ago, you've got em now.

We have all gone through the same thing with dodgy chairmen.

Keep things in perspective fellas !
Wednesday fans fickle ?
Really, how many would be turning up at Bramall Lane if they had endured the same crap (on and off the pitch) that we have had at Hillsborough for the last 8 years ?
It is only two years since Wednesday finished with a better average attendance than United in their 'Premiership' promotion season !
I know which set of fans are the most fickle in this city and it's not Wednesday !!

Earwiggo - i thought we'd spoken about your lies, now come on, admit to the board and yourself you've slipped back into your old ways haven't you.....now repeat after me;

"making stats up and repeating them to myself doesn't make them true"

and once more;

"making stats up and repeating them to myself doesn't make them true"

theres a good lad, now go and put your bib on, you're getting spagetti hoops all over your new Wednesday top :hihi:

What about the other 700 weve sold?

Even if the split is 50/50 (which it almost certainly isn't) between sold and given away tickets it's still a good initiative and has only positives as opposed to not introducing the initiative. It isn't sneaky or underhand, it's just good management of the football club. We will generate extra revenue from programme and food/drink sales in the ground (plus the cash from the kids joining the junior blades) and it will introduce more kids to Sheff U. If we had a shockingly bad season the kids might not want to come back but I don't think this will happen.

Whether we are promotion contenders or not has nothing to with whether we give away free season tickets!? I personally think Birmingham will win the league but there is no way you cannot consider us as candidates for promotion.

I have to say that over 18,700 season tickets sold is an excellent figure for the Blades, which should result in you averaging over 26,000 per game, over the full season.

Your club and especially your chairman, Kevin McCabe has to be applauded for the professional way in which they approach their task. Very impressive!!

I just wish that my club had such a tremendous businessman in charge, who has the same passion, enthusiasm and ambition for the team to do well, both on and off the pitch.

I can see the Blades going up this season, but the Owls will struggle again, due to the muppets in charge down in S6.

I agree with you Dimitri.
As I've said on another thread, it's sound business sense what the Blades have done (if the rumours are true).
What we (and you, probably) would like to know is, how many of the published 18,000+ season tickets were 'sold', and how many given away as part of a deal? Is it 18,000 plus ????? freebies, or are the freebies included?
Either way, it's a lot more than we've sold:hihi:

If the rumours are true, it's another case of the United board showing the Wednesday board how to improve the club..
Of course United are candidates for promotion. (90% of Blades think it's already a done deal)
So do the fans of Birmingham, Reading, Wolves, Plymouth, blah, blah, blah.:thumbsup:

winda_wesher, What Parson X Owl wrote is a reasonable comment but what has that got to do with the fickle statement ?
No one is disagreeing with the fact you have sold more season tickets, or are a better run club :confused: !!!

Ok, I haven't seen the other thread.

I reckon it's got to be that we have 18,000+ season ticket holders (bought and freebies). It makes more sense for us to give the total as the figure as it again raises the profile of the club (not by much I admit but still a bit) even though it is bending the truth slightly). It wouldn't be hard to spin either - 'we never said we had 'sold' 18,700 season tickets, we said we had that number of season ticket holders'. Or something like that anyway.

As it's only under 12's that qualify and you have to pay £10 and register the kid as Junior Blade there will be a lot of people who didn't take up the offer. If it was free and a case of 'here's a kids ticket just say yes and it's yours' then loads more people would have taken it up. As the season ticket holders stood at 18,700 I reckon we'll have 19,000 by the first home game. Like everyone else I have absolutely no idea what the figure of paid for tickets is/will be but I would guess at 11,000 without a kids ticket and then 4,000 bought with a kids ticket. That's a bit over a third that will have took up the offer which I think is reasonable.

I don't think we will ever disclose the actual bought/freebie amounts as we don't really need to - noboby who we would have to answer to is going to ask.

Nobody is certain for promotion this season but I think B'ham are the favourites. Division is tougher this year though.

it would be interesting to see the figures for sold and freebies but if any wednesday fan is wanting it to have a pop at utd fans then its pointless as they will of sold more than us, will be interesting next season when hopefully we have had a decent board. i really dont see why wednesday havent done the same, surely a few given away tickets and a much fuller ground is better than over priced tickets and a half empty ground

So now we've sold 18,700k and half of those are freebies we've given away....hahaha, reighto!!!

Funny thing is even if half of em were freebies we've still sold more than you lot :)

The figure for the freebies is around the 6000 figure, yep good numbers for pigs, can't knock it.

Now where do you get these numbers from?

I'm surprised you know how many are freebies as the numbers haven't actually been announced but i'm sure you must have one of those books of stats i mentioned earlier.

All this is irrelavent, im not saying id sit in an empty crowd and watch my team win, but im sure Wigan, Blackburn, Bolton, and Fulham are happy enough having a few spare seats around em as long as there in the Premiership.
The crowd debate is boring old and has been done several times over.

It's only the blunts pre-season raffle that has given them a high take up of season tickets.

1st prize = 1 season ticket
2nd prize = 2 season tickets
3rd prize = 3 season tickets
etc
etc
etc
etc

:hihi::hihi::hihi:

Seriously though, I'm not too displeased with our supposed low take up. This must surely mean that the new board will dispense with the dubious services of one Kevan Walker and do something to a) recompense overcharged fans and b) to attract further season ticket holders by lowering prices. :thumbsup:

I'm not that interested in Utd giving free kids seats away, why have empty seats when you can have young bums (no offence intended) on them that will grow up to be old bums (offence intended) who pay their dues? :hihi:

So until someone actually tells us how many season tickets have been sold and Utd declare how many freebies have been handed out the argument is futile. :confused:
