Thanks Oh God, I misread the thread title as "crotch bonnet" and my mind was truly boggling :hihi: Must have spent too much time on the thread about Queen Victoria's knickers. happyhippy 01-08-2008, 02:00 AM There was a Caribbean stall in Castle Market that always had them. Oldtrout 01-08-2008, 02:19 AM I bought some from Tesco. Quite a while ago now though - and my mouth's still burning!!! :) Oldtrout 01-08-2008, 02:26 AM 59p for 30g at Tesco. Just checked on the online shopping website. happyhippy 01-08-2008, 02:39 AM I bought some from Tesco. Quite a while ago now though - and my mouth's still burning!!! :) They certainly are good stuff! cloudforest 01-08-2008, 08:45 AM Have a look here: www.dorsetnaga.com You have to order by snail mail but it could be worth it if you like extra hot chillis. It's a company run by a bloke who used to appear regularly on Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage series. Ralphus 01-08-2008, 09:22 AM I've bought them from the market and Beanies sometimes have them. They're bloody lethal though so be careful! I once made a bottle of chilli sauce with 24 of the things and it gave me heart palpitations and I couldn't breathe properly. I'm pretty hardcore with chillis too. Plain Talker 01-08-2008, 09:25 AM bit too strong for my tastes! :gag: DippyDore 01-08-2008, 10:00 AM You obviously have never been to a Tesco, Sainsbury or Waitrose supermarket Sir, as all these places sell bonnet peppers. Conversely, Morrison's, Asda, Netto, Aldi, Spar probably don't sell them because they cater for more "downmarket" tastes. Other than that you could buy them from some (but not all) continental grocers delicatessen. The bonnet pepper is a Carribean spice so you want to try a Carribean grocer/delicatessen rather than an Indian/Pakistani one. There's an excellent Carribean grocer/deli on Abbeydale Road - damn I forgot the name but I'll come back to you on this. DippyDore 01-08-2008, 10:02 AM Found it. here you are... http://www.caribbean-food.co.uk/ By the way, you sure you are going to like bonnet peppers? They are insanely hot! jenz245 01-08-2008, 10:13 AM I bought some from next door to faith on Infirmary Rd only last week. Faith is number 162. Surprised you're still alive!!! :hihi: haddockman 01-08-2008, 11:59 AM There's still a stall in Castle Markets that sells them, it was there a couple of weekends ago anyway! m3_y 01-08-2008, 12:18 PM Cheers folks.. ill pop into tescos on abbeydale road and see if they have some... jenz245 01-08-2008, 12:23 PM May ask what ur making xx Nicoracle 01-08-2008, 12:55 PM Yabba on abbeydale road normally stocks them. louisbourg 01-08-2008, 06:03 PM hi there we have them for sale you can buy a big bag for a £1 , or as many or as few as you need thank you feel free to check the site for details  slimsid2000 01-08-2008, 06:11 PM Does anyone know where i could buy scotch bonnet chillies from in sheffield or online? Thanks Scotch Corner perhaps. spudgun 01-08-2008, 06:28 PM I get my chillis from www.hot-headz.co.uk They sell some really hot stuff coconuts 01-08-2008, 08:41 PM hi i have grown loads of chilli in my greenhouse, have done for couple for years now. its easy you can grow then from seed and have them on your window sil but. has to be inside. see thompsonandmorgan web site. sow them early about may they dont take much care just sun and warm and they are hotter mush hotter if you grow them yourself and you can freeze them. SSS6 01-08-2008, 09:35 PM Tesco sometimes have them. Otherwise the fruit and veg shop on South Road Walkley is a possibility Squiggs 02-08-2008, 12:37 AM You obviously have never been to a Tesco, Sainsbury or Waitrose supermarket Sir, as all these places sell bonnet peppers. TESCO is hardly "upmarket", certainly no "classier" than Morrisons Deerobe 02-08-2008, 12:50 AM TESCO is hardly "upmarket", certainly no "classier" than Morrisons Yes that's as maybe but Morrisons do not sell Scotch Bonnets. I buy mine from the shops at Page hall, they are considerably cheaper than Tesco. DippyDore 02-08-2008, 08:33 AM TESCO is hardly "upmarket", certainly no "classier" than Morrisons I didn't say Tesco's was "upmarket" did I? I said that Morrison's and the others in that list cater for more "downmarket" tastes. It depends what you mean by "classier". I shop occasionally at Morrison's which I think is good and possibly cheaper for many of the basics than Tesco's. But if I wanted something a bit more outside of mainstream basics I'd definitely say Tesco have a better choice. So, for example, the other day I was wanting to make some mexican dish which required cascabel chillies amongst other things. Morrison's do not have such specialised stuff (they have chillies I grant you, usually the short fat ones) but not these. And the same is true of a lot more specialised stuff. Tesco isn't the best either, but they do have some interesting stuff in their "Finest" range which is really very good quality and better than what Morrison's offer. Waitrose is "classier" than either Tesco or Morrisons and has even more of the specialised stuff. GQsm 07-08-2008, 04:45 PM Not been for a month or so but the stall in castle market has Scotch Bonnet among many other chillies (always in stock). It is very cheap and you can choose as many or as little as you like. They also do plantains, yams, cassava, chayote and other stuff you aren't going to find in a normal supermarket. Not noticed "martinsgoodtogo" on the wicker before, maybe it's new since the wicker became buses only (or I missed it). I'll make the effort to scope it out at some point but I think people should be supporting these local specialist shops rather than the supermarkets when buying specialist ingredients. |
