Hi all,
after doing a bit of family backround,I discovered my maternal grandmother was born on 12 oclock street,in attercliffe.I work in attercliffe, and I know theres a 12 oclock court, further up towards the wicker arches, which I assume was built on the old site of the street.I just wondered if anyone can shed any light on the whereabouts of 12 oclock street?

thanks
Gary

If you go into the local studies library at Surrey Srett and look through back issues of Family Tree Magazine, in one issue from the 1990's there is a reader's photo of a building on 12 o' clock street ( possibly a shop, i seem to remember).
Sorry if this is a bit vague.

You are right - I know because I'm the person who sent in the photo to Family Tree magazine. The photo was of the shop on the corner of Attercliffe Road and Twelve o'Clock Street - it was no. 33 Attercliffe Road and belonged to my great grandmother, who is the woman in the photo in front of the shop. She kept the shop from around 1905 until she died in 1940. One of her daughters and son-in-law lived at number 1, Twelve o'Clock Street, next door to the shop. Another daughter, I think, kept a fried fish shop further along Attercliffe Road. There were 8 or 9 children in the family altogether. Twelve o'Clock Street was roughly where Twelve o'Clock Court building is now, across the road from T W Ward. Would be very interested to know of any more information about the street or anyone who lived there.

Hi, just joined the forum and found your messages from April.
TWA756 request for info re: people living around Gt Grandmothers house at 33 Attercliffe Road.
My Gt Grandparents lived at The Old King John Hotel 35-37 Attercliffe Road until at least July 1914, a photo and description can be found in the book ''A wander up the 'cliffe''.
Some time after 1914 they moved to 47 Attercliffe Road.
If you want any more info, just let me know.

Hi woolley - was very interested in your message - had not heard of the Old King John but I am assuming that from the road number it must have been just across Twelve o'Clock Street from my gt grandmother's shop, on the opposite corner. I think there was a pub called the Twelve o'Clock but it was a bit nearer the Wicker, at the junction between Attercliffe Road and Savile Street - apparently that used to be known as the Twelve o'Clock junction on the bus and tram routes. The name is supposed to come from the type of water wheel which was on the River Don near there - I think it was called an overshot wheel (rather than undershot, which was the other type) - to do with the way the water goes round the wheel. Not sure what other info you might have but I would be very interested in anything more you can tell me. Think I've heard of the book you mentioned but not seen it - would I still be able to buy it - but if not I suppose the library has it.

Hi TWA756, the book was still available at Waterstones up to last xmas, and a copy is available at the Local Studies section of Central Library.
From the photo in the book, it appears that 33 and 35 are ajoining houses, The Old King John being 2 houses(35+37) with a central entrance. Apparently, 6 houses shared a rear courtyard containing toilet blocks etc and access to Saville St and yet another pub (can't remember the name) which at one time was managed by my Gt Grandfathers brother. Many of the pubs were closed down during the 1914-18 war including The Old King John, and my Gt Grandfather reverted back to Blacksmith and Wheelwright in a part of the T W Ward building opposit, this business continued through Grandfather and uncles until the 1960's.

as you approach the wicker arches from darnell on your right hand side is long row of buildings with a clock tower that is 12oclock street i had to go the prudential office there it is in the middle of the road quite awkward to get to
