Hello. Is it ok if I join your film group? I help out at the Abbeydale Picture House, doing promotions and fundraising.

I thought you might be interested in a couple of things... One is we're putting on a day of film on 6th September to help raise funds for the restoration of the building. It's a bit shabby inside, plastic seats and can be a bit drafty, but you can buy drinks at the bar and take them through with you to watch the film. The afternoon showing is Hoodwinked, and we're encouraging kids to dress up as their favourite fairy tale character for that. The evening show is an old classic (in fact 50 years old this year) - it's South Pacific - and we'd love everyone to come along in hawaii shirts, grass skirts, whatever takes your fancy. We'll have cocktails in the bar too!

The second thing, if you like old cinemas, is we're having an open weekend on 13th and 14th September. It's free to come in and have a tour of the building, hear about the history, have a look at our restoration plans, maybe throw a penny or two in the collection bucket too!

Once we've restored the roof, we can apply for funding to work on the rest of the building, so hopefully that will allow us to show more films (I'd like some old black and white films like Brief Encounter, The Whisperers, Friday Night/Saturday Morning, etc).

Thank you.

Oh, lovely, thanks for saying you'll come along. We'll have about 300 seats for the performance and you are best calling the box office (07775 966106) but I think it is on answerphone until Monday as the people who do ticket sales are away til then.

Thanks for the support!

Its on abbeydale road as it suggests :P close to the epmty car showrooms...if you get to the broadfield pub you've gone too far :P vise versa if you go past pizza hut youve gone too far.

tickets are £5, and the website is http://www.abbeydalepicturehouse.com

joancrawford - what type of promotion are you doing? if theres anything i can do to help, let me know, it will be really nice to get the picture house up and running again, just the building itself is a landmark :)

Thanks for the offer, I have to agree with you, I'm passionate about getting it up and running again and preserving the building. We need all the help we can get so let me know what you can do! We're launching a RAISING THE RAFTERS promotion at the beginning of September to fundraise for the new roof. There will be three ways of contributing - buy a roof slate postcard for a pound (these will be available at our events and downstairs in the Snooker Club and Bar Abbey), or buy a stack of slates at £5 per stack, or sign up to donate a certain amount per month to the fund. We'll have leaflets available at the film event and the open weekend, and I'll put downloadable pdfs on the website which will be updated shortly.

Thanks again :)

Yes, both papers are usually very kind to us! Perhaps you can bring some friends along to the film night or to the English Heritage Open Weekend - and encourage them to become a Friend of the Abbeydale Picture House, or sign up for roof slates? We're always looking for people with skills, not just money. We've got a volunteer graphic designer, 2 volunteer photographers, an accountant, people who help with youth theatre, costumes, lighting, publicity etc, so any skills are welcome - thanks again for the support.

I think this is a great venue and should definitly be saved and restored to its former glory. It would also be a great venue for professional theatre but I heard that in recent years it has been thought about as an amatuer theatre venue which I think would be a great shame for the venue.

Thanks to anyone who came along to the South Pacific themed film evening and to the open days last weekend. It was loads of fun and great to get so many new people through the doors.

We've launched our new website:
www.abbeydalepicturehouse.co.uk

and our Raising the Rafters campaign to help us replace the roof. You can sponsor a roof tile or two, only a pound each, and the forms are downloadable PDFs on the website. There's also a form on there to become a 'Friend' and a 'contact us' form if you think you'd like to help out in some other way.

I'd planned to try and make it along to the open weekend, but I had a horrible cold type thing over the weekend and only just managed to go out to buy cat food and a few bits from the shop! Hopefully there will be another open day sometime or a film I can come along and see :)
