View Full Version : Japan to sheffield advice, what's in sheffield for a japanese girl?
I know someone who is japanese and is coming over to stay in sheffield she has been here before (about 7 years ago) but i was just wondering what kind of things there are that are japanese based (clubs, bars, food, shopping, work etc)
someone mentioned there was saki / karaoke bar thingy near west street?
or if any1 knows any japanese people and how they adjusted to living in sheffiled? i would just like to give her as much information as possible so the whole thing doesn't seem as daunting.
ta!
It seems from the people I have spoken to that the food is a problem here (like we didn't know).
My friends were used to getting up early and walking past a noodle bar and having fish soup for breakfast. It took them some time to be able to eat. They also thought we were too laid back.
Although it hurts to say it, Leeds probably has more to offer someone from Japan.
I'd suggest contacting the Universities - they'll have some sort of information about facilities for Japanese students coming here.
Culturally they'll find it more relaxed / laid back and that can be frustrating. Body language can be an issue for people who've not been here before - people who're 'effusive' can freak out some Japanese people because they regard big gestures as intrusive. Some people I know who've visited here on business have commented taht the public transport system leaves things to be desired, but that the lower level of regimentation is nice.
In terms of money - Japan is a more plastic / card / e-cash culture, but we're catching up. Her mobile may or may not work here, and certainly all facilities she has in Japan will not be available on UK networks. Better she buys a PAYG here to stay in touch with her hosts.
But, horses for courses - she may find it just her cup of tea if she's been here before.
And of course, hook her up to the Sheffield Forum!
To your friend - dozo yoroshiku!

There is a wasabi sabi on london road which is pretty good and the chinese supermarket just of the more has some Japanese titbits. Bia Hoi also does Japanese beer - in fact how about a civilised meet there on wednesday and you can bring her along for us to try out our Japanese on ;)
shes not a student.
and she loves to sing (used to be in a covers band) so is on the look out for a karaoke bar. i have told her there are pubs that do karaoke nights but im not familiar with anywhere in sheffield that can be classed as a karaoke bar.
oh and she isnt coming til june....but i may drag her along to a meet or two.
anything else
thought there would be more replies...

Well, I'm not a student but 10 years ago I had a very nice chat with the Japanese studies department of the university about local cultural groups, etc.
The suggestion of the Universities was purely because they're the local organisations most likely to have the information you're looking for! :)
Joe
AHHHH i see

Whats in Sheffield for a Japanese girl? Why, Sheffield lads of course. [ I have heard it said that once a girl has had one of these then nothing else will do ]
Terraviva 27-04-2005, 21:06 Can't much more advice myself then what's already been given, but if you post this up in the main Sheffield chat section I'm sure you'd get a few more ideas. @ MODS - this wouldn't be considered off topic at all would it?

they must have low standards then ;) well dont worry, she's not a mail away bride......or is she :o
If she is a visitor, why not show her what Sheffield and Derbyshire has to offer.
When i go abroad, i want to see their culture, not pie and peas and beer.
Do English things, what she cannot do and see in Japan.
