Hi

I am moving to Sheffield from Middlesbrough for a new job and need to find a house pretty quickly since I will be commuting until I find somewhere.

I have picked up a property paper and have had a look through. I have a budget of up to 90k and want to get a decent sized house (preferably 2 bed) and I am hoping to get a garage or at least have off-street parking.

My main problem is that I just have no idea what areas I should be avoiding and where are some good places to look. If anyone can give me a few ideas I would be very grateful. In particular I saw some houses in Wincobank, Lower Manor and Castlebeck but I get the feeling these areas might not be so nice since the houses seem pretty cheap for what they are. I checked out the cars from the pictures as suggested in another post!

Castlebeck - renault laguna
Lower Manor - peugeot 206
Wincobank - BMW

Hope someone can help!

Emma

You should seriously consider renting before you buy.

I did.

Things worked out much better, you can get a grip on the city and not rush it

That's my suggestion too.

Wincobank isn't usually BMW country ;)

You need to look at all the cars in the street when you visit

Only you can decide the area that's likely to suit you, but tell us what you need and we may be able to help.

Are you looking to be near the nightlife? Handy for trains/trams? Near the motorway? Are schools an issue for you? etc...

You might bump into some ex-Teessiders when you get here. There seems to be a few of us.

I think the only way you're going to be sure is to rent for a while first, as someone else said. Everyone has different experiences and impressions of places. I'm sure you'll get something nice for 90K though.

Thanks guys! Have been looking at this Wincobank place, can someone tell me where this Flower Estate is because I can't seem to figure it out and a lot seems to hinge on whether the house might be near there or not!

Also, what about Parson Cross, Longley and Southey Green?

We still need to know more about you before we can say whether they are suitable

I'd back up previous messages to rent and get a feel for Sheffield before you buy - might also be worth having a word with some of your colleagues to be.

I have a car so public transport links aren't a major issue for me. Don't have kids so schools aren't important either. The most important things for me are that I want to have either off street parking or preferably a garage for my car, I need to be able to get to Chapeltown easily enough and also will be driving to Derby a lot to see my boyfriend.

At the moment I live in one of the less desirable parts of Middlesbrough but have found that the stret I am on is absolutely fine and i have never had any problems.

I know people keep saying to rent, I will be temporarily staying with my boyfriend until I sell my house here since i can't afford to pay my mortgage here and rent there as well! So I will have had a chance to speak to some people by then.

what about stocksbridge, not far from chapletown nice area and property prices there are certainly lower than the rest of sheffield.
