View Full Version : What/how do you recycle?
What (if anything) do you recycle and how?
I'm sure I'll have missed an option so feel free to add to my list ;)
Don't forget to choose both what and how
This thread was provoked by the Onyx thread where I said this:

Besides, if so much of our rubbish is incinerated, surely it's plastics we should be eliminating from the general waste?
I wish I could put my plastics in the blue bin, but government targets don't take account of local exceptions such as incinerators and CHP schemes, so the council are forced to play the figure-massaging game, and because paper is denser than plastic, and contributes the greater tonnage, it's paper they collect separately
I recycle my plastics and glass the hard way :(
rothschild 25-04-2005, 00:45 I have two big composting bins plus a compost heap..so all usable stuff is made into compost for our garden. We also take all woody stuffs to our local dump-it site to be "converted". A lot of newspaper is used in various ways in our household.............tho we don't buy many newspapers to begin with. Some of it goes into composting............much is used for pussy cat purposes as regards litter trays.........also as covering for tender plants on a frosty night. I shred magazines for pet bedding..but again we don't buy many magazines. Bottles and jars are put into a bottle bank. Carrier bags are re-used until they fall apart. Plastic bags have a multitude of uses..............the flimsy ones that you put your veg into are great for emptying the contents of the vacuum cleaner. I try wherever possible not to bag the fresh veg that I buy but the shop assistants aren't allways too happy rounding up the sprouts etc to weigh! lol.
Old wooly jumpers make great hanging basket liners............and pet bedding. I save up old printer cartridges and send them off for recycling...........usually some money is donated to a charity. Oh..........I also have two huge blue vats to collect rainwater off the greenhouse roof.
Wash the brush off an empty mascara and it can be used to scrub those small and awkward to reach places..................the list is endless really.
I do think that the packaging of supermarket goods has gone beyond the ridiculous! There is such a waste of resources there that if it was to stop I am sure we would all benefit.
I can remember the days of good quality plastic carrier bags............we used to put them on our feet if we had holes in our shoes!! Nowadays the shoes are thrown away and new ones bought!
There was a lot to be said for hardship...it taught appreciation.

I would like to be able to take my plastic bottle for washing liquid to the supermarket and have it refilled. I used to buy the refill cartons, but wax cartons are not recyclable. I notice they're difficult to come by now :suspect:
And don't start me on about shop assistants and carrier bags  and as for packaged veg
It's bad enough with Coke coming in plastic bottles :(
LoopyLou 25-04-2005, 06:21 All paper and card goes in the blue bin.
except white envelopes which I resuse to write the weekly shopping list on :loopy:
All glass, plastics and cans are saved in a box under the sink and taken weekly(ish) to the recycling bays at Morrisons.
All green waste is chucked in the green bin. Had a compost bin and womery at my old house, but only a small garden at my new one, so havenlt got the storage space or the need for compost.
Loopy.
Only 1 person in 19 so far who bins everything

Don_Kiddick 25-04-2005, 22:53 Litha already has a catalogue of spells against me! :hihi: I give her grief on the Rotherham chat forum too!
:D I luv Litha me I do :D
redrobbo 25-04-2005, 23:00 Feeling a little guilty now. I've stopped using the car, and now walk or catch the bus instead. This has altered my shopping habits, and I'm less likely to visit a supermarket that has the recycling bins for glass and plastics. So, they are now all going in the big bin. Don't have a garden as such, so can't compost.
So that only leaves paper in the blue bin. Must say though, that since I've started using a blue bin for paper, my big bin never gets full anymore. Same goes for my neighbours.
noseyrosie 25-04-2005, 23:50 Ooh recycling! I really like those pro-recycling ads on the TV don't you?
Anyway. We always recycle glass and paper, and compost everything, but there really really really should be facilities for plastic recycling! Oil's running out fast fast fast!!!

There are
glass, Tins/cans, Plastic bottles/food tubs - morrisons
Paper - blue bin
plastic bags...got a pile of these waiting to be recycled. Dont know newahere in hillsborough that take carriers for recycling ne1?
Of those that recycle stuff at supermarket..how many drive specifically for that purpose?
A while back we had an add for cheap compost bins...some onyx/council subsidised scheme. Ne1 still got info for this deal - now I have made space for one!
I was just wondering......
..... what happened to this thread
Don_Kiddick 28-06-2005, 04:40 Wehay!

i do try to take paper stuff to my boyfriends mums house who do have a blue paper bin, and if we have a big clothes clear out anything worth while does get taken to a charity shop/ supermarket thing.

It is just shredded, mashed/pulped and compressed into pellets.
