View Full Version : Sheffield & Ecclesall Co-op
grannypat 30-07-2008, 21:07 Does anyone remember the Christmas parties at The Cutler's Hall held for employees of Sheffield & Ecclesall Co-op, The Arcade, Ecclesall Road?
Also the Lescar Hotel on Sharrowvale Road. Good friends were to be found at either.
grannypat 26-12-2011, 23:47 I posted the last message back in 2008 and so far had no replies. There were so many people who I used to work with at The Arcade, S & E Co-op on Ecclesall Road. We used to have Thursday afternoons out (half day closing) and go to the cinema or play snooker at the sports room on Napier Street. Am I the only one who remembers those long ago days. How sad.

scargill 27-12-2011, 10:19 what year/ years are you looking at
My dad used to be a S&E milkman, working from Archer Road delivering around Lower Walkley in late 50’s early 60’s. I remember going to dinner dances at the Arcade. Could have been around Christmas/New Year
grannypat 27-12-2011, 11:37 Hi,
Wow, no replies for 3 years and now two. Terrific. I was there as a window dresser from 1962 to 66 approx. I did know one or two of the milkmen from Archer Road but I expect it will be unlikely that I knew your dad but you never know. Some names I remember are Barbara Ball (she joined the Navy) Christine Townsend, Hazel Welch, Wendy Barford, Michael Wootten( I think that was his surname). Dear old Mr Bunting used to be in the dispatch department. David Smith, Gillian and Carol on ladies stockings, Mr Hobson and Elaine on men's department. Mrs Maisie Powell on ladies knitwear, Miss Askham who commited suicide, Pam on ladies underwear, Miss Langley on childrens clothes.Mr Clark was in charge of the window dressing department. Dave Athorn was a milkman from Archer Road. Do any of these names ring a bell????

My dad was Ted Holmes, his brother Stan worked in the bottling plant at Archer Rd. Both are no longer with us and I never knew any of their work mates.
JACK HEWITT 28-12-2011, 10:31 Hi Granny Pat
For the life of me I cannot remember my Mom's number until now it just came in an instant then when I want to remember it I cant recall it as kids we had great fun getting chased around the arcade by the staff we would start off in the shoe department to the left hand side of the Ecclesall rd entrance run through that then all over the place going up and down in the lift near the funeral dept then run out on to the Cemetery rd entrance obvious you will remember the cash track that ran all around the shop what a novelty that was HAPPY DAYS.

Sounds like something out of, "are you being served"
I remember starting work in 1963 aged 15 years, use to pass the shop every day, perhaps you could have been doing the window display?
I worked at Hoffmans the garage next to the S & E, do you remember it?
grannypat 29-12-2011, 19:34 Hi RX 2,
Yes, It's quite possible that I might have been in one of the windows which you passed.
Yes, I remember Hoffmans as both my mum and my aunt used to work there on the petrol pumps. I can't remember exactly which years they were there but I think it was probably just before you strated there. My mum was Madge Owen and my aunt was Ina Hobson. Do the names ring any bells.?
