View Full Version : Do you eat the skin on a jacket potato?
I had to ask a friend why they didn't eat the skin of their jacket potatoes as I considered it to be the best part and the response I got was why do we peel the skin off the potatoes when cooking chips? And for that reason it was considered bad to eat!
So, what is your view on this?
Disco_Cat 24-04-2005, 19:45 I's say it was the best bit, but posts have to be more then two words.
cobaltblue 24-04-2005, 19:46 What's the point if you don't eat the skin?!?!?! I have a friend that just scoops out all the potatoe and leaves the skin like an empty shell .... what a waste!!
The jacket's the best bit, especially if it's nice and crispy.....the skin also contains the most vitamins, so it's good for you as well.
I've eaten chips from unpeeled potatoes....nothing wrong with them either.
Yes i agree the 'jacket' is the best bit. Especially if they had been baked with rock salt and a good quality extra virgin olive oil!.
All the vitamins, ruffage and goodie bits are in the skin!

Agree on both. I dont peel any potatoes. They only get done by Nomme if he wants mash ( so bout twice a year :hihi: ).
LittlestLass 24-04-2005, 20:11 The skin is the best bit, but only if it's crispy - microwaved jackets are just plain wrong.
Applegrim 24-04-2005, 20:15 It's the best bit, I leave mine till last, then put either a bit of butter in or a bit of cottage cheese and onion. My husband doesn't eat his though
Of course. It's good for you, and it's the best part. The only places who peel their potatoes here are the fast food restaurants. French fries made with unpeeled potatoes are terrific.
Try making mashed potatoes or potato salad with red potatoes, and leave the skins on. Yum.

*Twinkle* 24-04-2005, 20:30 Yeah I eat the skin off jacket tata's only if they're cooked in salt in the oven... Microwave ones are convenient, but the skin isnt worth eating :gag:
spiffymonkey 24-04-2005, 20:49 I eat the skin on Jacket's. Mmmm... skin
Except the ones we used to get at work. When the potato is so overcooked that there is actually more skin that icky brown mush inside, then I'll just give it a miss ;)
Don_Kiddick 25-04-2005, 09:26 I never peel potatoes whether chipping, scolopping mashing or leaving whole as bolied. The skin imparts it's own flavour & as has been previously posted  is the best bit.
Now anyone not tried this yet I recommend doing Sweet Potatoes as baked spuds - just treat them in the same way!
Mmm:P mmM!!
Ousetunes 25-04-2005, 09:35 You're amking me hungry! I love the skin, probably more than the potato itself, especially if it's quite tough (overcooked). It tastes wonderful. Beans on a jacket spud, simple but lovely.
Not eating the skin is akin to buying fish and chips and not eating the batter/skin of the fish.
Hungry now.
A.B.Yaffle 25-04-2005, 09:40 I agree the skin is the best part of the potato. I even prefer to leave the skin on when I mash them!

Yep, I agree! Don't peel them, just cut them into large wedges (never tried them whole?) and put them in the oven with some oil on - oooh they are sooo good!
As for jacket potatoes, sometimes I eat the skin, sometimes I don't ! Don't know why really. I don't know why people don't like the skins whe done in the mcrowave, they're yummy when all kinda squidgy!
Mmmmm, hungry now too!
muddycoffee 25-04-2005, 09:47 I once heard that the most healthy part was underneath the skin, so you lost that part if you peeled. Once a week or so I go to Pedro's Grand Potato on abbeydale road, where he always has an oven full of excelent baked potatoes, and a vast selection of fillings to try.
Also Sweet potatoes are excellent roasted, and quite filling. Unlike normal potatoes, you can make an excellent job of baking them in a microwave, and all that is required is a tiny bit of butter, as a whole one is enough to satisfy anyone's appetite for hours.
melthebell 25-04-2005, 17:58 ive just eaten a jacket potato WITH skin not an hour ago for my tea :)
hardcore me lol
I actually prefer the skin of the potato as do a lot of others!!!!
I was told it was the best part for you...like the crusts of bread but not sure if that was just a ploy to get you to eat it all when I was younger???
