View Full Version : TV? Or Not TV? That Is The Question
LordSnooty 24-04-2005, 18:57 Since bidding my darling ex-Mrs Snooty farewell eight summers ago, I have managed to survive without televisual receiving equipment. That's right, boys and girls - I haven't got a telly. One of my friends (not a Lord) is also without and hasn't gone mad yet. Are there any other Forum users who are managing to get through life sans TV?
rubydazzler 24-04-2005, 19:04 i bid my darling TV farewell about a year ago ... maybe two even, when it just gave up the ghost after 15 loyal service.
I never bothered to replace it. After all ... why do I need one when I have my beloved PC to help me waste my time :help:
Ruby, dear.....I think for the whole time I've known you....over three years now.....I can't remember you ever having a TV, except for a very short time, last year I think....and, even then, the pc came first.
I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have a TV....how would I manage without my six months of 24....I spend the other six months waiting for the next series....lol
miniminch 24-04-2005, 19:21 tv is 'satans dreambox' we can all do without it - it is only a warped illusion that you can't - tv keeps peope stupid and docile - be without it - be active - be healthy

LordSnooty 24-04-2005, 19:22 Miniminch - So you've got one, then?
TV is a good thing. It keeps the kids off the streets. If I didn't have one, I would imagine I may get caught up in incidents in Rotherham nightclubs and the like, but I can't be certain.

The television has taken the place of the fireside, where families can gather round and watch the flicker... It brings us all together.

it also negates any responsibility for families to inteact, so they can slowly fall appart without anyone really knowing. Televison destroys families and fills the public with advertising and lies! It has become societies cancer and a way of instilling fear into the population and thereby controlling them, without organised religion! Pandoras Box!
...And it can cause you harm! Radiation will get you if you don't sit more than 6ft from it!!

What programme did you hear that on?
I think we just have to dispell the myth that if there was no T.V, society would be a better place. It's a benign invention that is there purely to entertain and sometimes inform.
I recognise more in your description of advertising and lies in the big, scary old world of the internet. (If you flick over to ITV the worst you will be exposed to is an advert for e-sure in between an episode of Trishia. It won't automatically try to scan your bank details or implant a program that makes you pay premium rates for watching it. It's just big, friendly, old fashioned T.V). Whereas the internet is capable of doing all that and more... and yet here we are, fully paid up subscribers to 'the most gigantic lying mouth of all time'. Happy surfing!

I have a television. Like it, i'm quite selective about what I watch and am quite happy not to have it switched on every minute of the day.
If there's nothing on I want to watch i turn it off. I'm not a great 'movie' person and rarely watch films. I prefer more factual and documentaries, but I also indulge in 'soaps' too.
TV viewer and happy
Sheffette 24-04-2005, 23:14 Sad to say I'm a lapsed non-telly owner (sort of like a lapsed Catholic except I won't go to hell, I just have it beamed into my living room.)
Bloke and I ditched the telly and rejoiced in our non-telly-dom, even bragging to our friends about our tv free life...erm listening to the radio and surfing the net.
But suddenly there just seemed so much exciting stuff on other people's televisions, so many documentaries, so many dramas....bit like when someone is reading something on the bus infront of you and you're desperate to read it too, even if its a plumbing manual.
I was lured back and splashed out on a big telly which now we, erm, don't watch. Ever.
The thing is now gathering dust in the lounge. Infact, I think if I turned it on I wouldn't be able to tell whether the ariel had dropped off the roof or it was just dirty.
Its all been an utter waste of time.
Leddi - agree on the Paxman thing. "Come On!"

Unless you plug a child into separate boxes in each bedroom ;)
I'm glad some families still do 'family viewing' :)
My telly tends to stay off unless Mr Strix is home. He objected to my foruming at first, until I booted up infront of some drivvel he had on the telly - then he realised the forum was more informative and was relevant to living in Sheffield ;)
I'm forever bringing local issues and events to his notice :D
And I have to say - I've never made any new friends through the telly :( but I have through the forum :)
I just need to cure my addiction now :(
*Twinkle* 25-04-2005, 05:20 I didn't have a TV right from Aug 04 until end of March 05!!! To be honest I didn't really miss it... I only missed corrie, but I've caught up really quickly and I haven't missed that much! The reason we didn't have one was because we couldn't afford the license as we were in our first home and pots/pans/oven/fridge had to be bought first... We have one now, but to be fair I only watch it for Corrie... I don't know why I pay my license, its not like I watch BBC anyway - its utter drivel.
I have no life I admit I love my T.V!!! :( But my time infront of that screen has gone down since joining the Forum and sitting infront of a different screen.
At least now I get to communicate with the odd human or is that odd humans!!!
The Forum has saved me
All I can say , Lord Snooty , is that you , and others of your ilk ought to be MADE to have a T.V. !
How can you take part in this great nation of ours without a telly ? It's simply not good enough.
When people talk about Big Brother or the latest Pop music , what on earth do you do ? Hang your head in shame , I hope .
Have you ever watched Sex in the City ?--------and I don't mean from Fargate. No? How can you form opinions then ?
I've been glued to the telly since 1953 and the Ward Orderly here says I've still got nearly all my faculties and I'm nearly 58 !
LordSnooty, have you got radio though? If you've got a radio, you're cheating, because it's just like having a telly, but without the pictures.
Sheffette 25-04-2005, 07:56 So I log onto my daily Grauniad and lo and behold:April 25th - May 1st is TV Turn-Off week!
http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,14173,1469530,00.html
Plus , Lord Snooty,
You may not have a t.v but what about your hordes of servants and , let's face it , slaves.?
Can you honestly tell us that you have never once sneaked into your parlourmaid's private quarters to have a peep at her Kate Bush ?
Or sneaked into the Butler's domain for a quick look at his Big Brother ?
I think it's time to come clean about your latest 24" , made in Japan , and have done with it . Honesty is the best policy as Tony said to Jack Straw.
I do have a TV, but rarely watch it. I'd hate to be like my housemate who comes home from work and then spends the evening in front of the TV. It seems like a huge waste of life to me. I'd prefer not to waste ten years of my life in front of a telly letting my brain rot.
Luckily I have friends who have a similar opinion. So, when big brother is on and someone mentions it to me, I smile politely; turn to another friend to talk about something interesting and real.
I do enjoy watching the odd documentary from time to time. But, only if it teaches me something new that I'm interested in.
It also annoys me if you're in a social situation at a friend's house or something and someone puts the TV on. All of a sudden, everyone is drawn into looking at it and the conversation runs dry.
I think listening to the radio is a bit different as you can easily listen while doing other stuff at the same time. TV eats up too many mental resources.

My darling ex-Mrs Snooty was Scottish, which meant visiting her rellies every three weeks (they were not members of the aristocracy). They had their faults (someone was sent out to buy 60 Benson and Hedges every forty-five minutes, the weekly drinks bill could have cleared the national debt in Chad etc....) but I will say this for them; whenever a visitor called, the TV went off straight away - and not because they hadn't bought a licence. I think it's simply good manners to turn your TV off when someone calls. Someone you want to have a conversation with, anyway. Being unable to offer this courtesy in my own home - only because I am bereft of televisual receiving apparatus - I do it as often as I can when visiting others. They seem grateful, if a little shocked.

What a loon! Thats like saying a garden shed is just like an aircraft carrier because it's like an aircraft carrier with a garden shed on it, only without the aircraft carrier.
I rarely watch TV during the week in my hotel room. I prefer to anoy the people in the next rooms with my music! :help:
Well what did you think I meant? Mneh, blimmin' toffs. Bet you just pay someone else to watch telly for you.

But Fareast, I watched TV incessantly from about 1968 to 1983, and again between 1990 and 1997. I thoroughly enjoyed most of it, but.........I can do watching TV. I've had loads of practise and find it very easy. I know what it's like. I just feel I've done enough of it for one life time. Having reached the age of 41, I feel ready to tackle new challenges, like improving my woeful jazz guitar technique, learning the pianoforte, and trying not to eat so many doughnuts.

Au contraire. When I want my telly fix I go and stand outside Currys for a few hours. One of my servants lip reads for me and the other passes me bags of doughnuts.

If you'd have a telly, you would know that last week was national doughnut week. Think of the extra doughnuts you missed out on - ah, the power of the tragic lantern! Apparently this week is healthy eating week. (I shall ignore that though).
I could quite happily exist without a TV.... I don't think my kids would approve though as they like watching cartoons etc.
It's all reality TV drivel these days anyway...I may as well turn into a fly and mosy on down the street in and out everyone's houses.....
I still watch it though....
:wow:

I'm glad you think it's clever! I didn't say I never watch TV, just that I haven't got one myself. In fact I love watching TV at friends' houses, it's a real treat - particularly The Simpsons, which is the funniest thing since Father Ted, in my opinion. The 'Witness Relocation Scheme' one is my favourite - pure genius!
PS I am bluffing it with the apostrophies, any guidance from grammar experts would be welcome. I was hoping Kristian might give me a few tips (cue avalanche of single entendres).

So we can assume that instead of being offended if someone leaves the TV on when you visit, you actually go round specifically to pike at their telly?! Excellent saving of the licence fee, my Lord!

I am never offended. Pooface.
redrobbo 25-04-2005, 20:42 So far, I make that LordSnooty, miniminch and Rubydazzler who go without a t.v. Well, add redrobbo to the list!
I haven't possessed a telly in over a decade now. It's utter drivel most of the time. Soaps, Big Brother, I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, Trisha, Songs of Praise - the list is endless!
I do miss Wimbledon fortnight, the Simpsons, and a few other programmes, but this is a small price to pay for the freedom of not being glued to a box.
I have had many interesting exchanges of letters with the TV Licensing Authority, who seem to regard me as some kind of freak and view my disclaimers of not owing a tv set with deep suspicion. I challenged them to search my house at a date and time of their choosing, and asked them to pay the cost of a license fee to my favourite charity when they discovered that I do not possess a demon box in my house! They finally gave up pestering me several years ago.
I have been going on holiday to a remote mountain cottage in Snowdonia several times a year for nearly 30 years now. It has no electricity supply, and hence, no telly. What bliss! When friends accompany us on a first visit, they always ask the same question - 'but what shall we do in an evening without a telly?' They soon re-discover the art of conversation, playing cards and games, and evening walks. We also watch the sun go down behind the mountain peaks whilst sipping wine.
When they get home, they then play the video recorder to catch up on Eastenders and Coronation Street. I'm still hoping that one day, one of my friends might get home and chuck out the telly instead!
PS However, since getting rid of the demon box, can anyone satisfy my curiosity - did they ever manage to dig Ena Sharples out from under the rubble of the viaduct?

wow - your pilgrimage sounds heavenly and replenishing! When I had a telly I used to watch news 24 (24hours a day) I was scared to go out - Now i dont even know if theres a war on or a terrorist has struck or is about to strike! I couldnt do anything before except worry (thats why the government puts us on red alert - fightened people are easily manipulated) the difference is I dont worry now! A mate a work told me about the tsunarmi and I thought a new bar had opened on west street!
LordChaverly 25-04-2005, 22:07 I want a 42" Plasma. The new High Definition Panasonic 500s out next month look like TVs to die for.
Red Robbo,
Hear , hear !
I used to watch telly , I should think the average number of hours a week and then in 1988 I started working abroad. I thought , " God how can I manage without the telly ? "
Well , the withdrawal symptoms only lasted a week -----then bliss ! . More time for conversations , going out , reading and writing letters----more time for real people.
I' m ashamed to admit that when I do return to the U.K. I do get hooked again to some degree , but luckily not to my pre-1988 extent. I find the problem is that there are some excellent programmes , dotted about , and it takes a lot of self-control to switch off between the good ones.I never miss it though when I know I CAN'T get it.
I watch maybe 10 programs a year. I see no point personally as even the informative ones tend to be bobbins nowardays

I understand where your coming from, but TV can be a good "get away" sometimes. I mean i dont watch TOO much but i watch quite a bit i guess. And its nice just to switch off from reality sometimes and watch some drivvle(sp) that is on the box nowadays.
On the other hand, looking at the people who dont watch it, has lack of TV watching got anything to do with addiction to the internet/forum for example?? Its just those who have posted before me are all in the above 1000 posts category?!?
Television is little more than a cognitive contraceptive. A vast majority of the programs are chewing gum for the mind, and even most of the documentaries border on patronising, offering information in bite-size pieces that are more suited to a primary school audience.
I find it a shame to witness people talk about various programs, and their characters, as if they are real people and real lives. Is your own life so shallow, so boring, that you have to adopt virtual and surrogate friends? Is this the only thing the masses have in common: the lowest common denominator that the majority can converse about?
I can think of myriad, infinitely better ways to "escape" the stresses of the real world, than staring at accelerated electrons impacting on a phosphorescent screen for hours at a time...
TV. The glorified, apathy inducing cathode-ray tube.
DragonofAna 10-11-2005, 06:47 I do not watch television. Haven't for quite some time now. From what I remember it was all pap and repeats anyhow. Too much to do without wasting time watching television - though occasionally I will watch a DVD on an evening.

throw away your television
Jimbob1989 10-11-2005, 07:07 I watch it sometimes, but not much. Parents watch it a lot more, I tend to watch the news channels when something big is happening or if I need to know about something for my political studies. Realy don't like things like big brother :loopy:
