jamesf1982 30-07-2008, 10:14 AM does anyone know of a decent tapas restaurant in sheffield?
Ive had good tapas when working away but never seem to be able to find a good tapas restaurant in sheffield.
Not really looking for a restaurant chain, looking for a nice "family run" restaurant with good quality fresh cooked tapas.
Its for a special occasion!!!
ANy ideas?

pete_jim 30-07-2008, 10:23 AM The Mediteranean (sp?) on Sharrowvale Road used to have a Tapas menu for the early diners better ring and check if they still do it, and there's Platillos in Leopold Square. Both independently run not 'chains'.
haddockman 30-07-2008, 10:44 AM Is La Mancha on West St. tram stop any good? It always looks nice when I've looked!
thomaspaine 30-07-2008, 10:49 AM there is one on trippet lane called cubanas , i have been there several times with my partner , i would recommend that
Unisol 30-07-2008, 10:51 AM You could always try Platillo's (http://www.platillos.co.uk/flash/index.php) in Leopold Square which we have always found to be excellent.

I would second that! As good as any Tapas I've had in Spain.
Unisol 30-07-2008, 12:25 PM Yeah, nice place too.
Fantastic staff everytime we've been.

We went here a few weeks ago, on a Sunday evening. Pretty boring stuff really, everything seemed very oily, and some of the dishes weren't as flavoursome or spicy as we expected.
There was also a "drainy" smell every now and again wafting from the kitchens. :gag:
timcobbold 30-07-2008, 01:07 PM Spinrocs in Crookes was very good. Ive not been in since new management took over but ive heard its still very good
I wasn't very impressed with La Mancha, ordered about 6 dishes between 2 of us and the only one either of us thought was any good was the chicken burritos.
I love Cubana though, if you go between 5-6.30 (I think) it's cheap as well.
Val@Spice 31-07-2008, 01:54 PM Spice are having an event at Cubana next week, so the joint will be heaving. One of our popular nights. Excellent food and lots of it.
jamesf1982 31-07-2008, 07:36 PM thanks for the replies sounds like Platillos is my best option then. i thought it was part of a chain- clearly i was wrong!
ill go down and give it a try
cheers again

I was in there last night with a big party and we thought it was great. Must go again with Mrs F. and order lots when I don't have to share it :hihi:

I love it there, the food is really good and I would rate it one of the better tapas places I've been too. The veggie stuff is brilliant, though I do think that the meat dishes seem to lack in flavour compared to them, which is strange as I'm a big meat eater and normally prefer meat dishes.
My favourite has to be the red pepper and goats cheese one. I took my mum there after going a few times with big parties and it was nice to choose my own dishes though (I don't eat fish) we had 7 dishes all together + bread and dip and could not eat all of it, I think 5/6 would have been enough.
I think Spinrocs is still pretty good if you don't want to go into the centre.
pete_jim 01-08-2008, 10:23 AM Went to Platillos last night and it was tremendous, couldn't fault a thing.

I could only fault the whopping bill :help: Worth it though.
My boyfriend and I took his younger sisters to Platillos last night and weren't overly impressed. The selection of dishes was good (though not all that spanish) but that's about all. My boyfriend commented on how clearly I was speaking when I made the reservation but they still wrote my name 'Mary' down as 'Mars' which was a bit bizarre but funny. We ordered 9 dishes between us and whilst some of them were nice enough the meatballs were just like the ones I had from cans as a child, the patatas bravas was nothing compared to Cubana's and we weren't impressed with most of them and my cocktail was horrible (I love cocktails and liked all the ingredients inside it just wasn't made well), most if not all the food was cold aswell. The waitress was a bit clueless and when collecting out plates at the end accidentally threw some tomato sauce covered cutlery at my boyfriends back and spent ages trying to work out what to do about it (eventually gave me some wet tissues which disintergrated) and then seemed really grumpy with us (presumably she was embarrased). I also thought the music was far too loud and made it very difficult for us to hear each other. It wasn't a horrible experience by any stretch but having gone on the back of reviews on here we were disappointed and won't go again, especially as there are so many other places to go.

I agree. Was a great place to eat. Was VERY impressed.
Sivila 05-08-2008, 01:09 AM Can anyone help?
There is another thread on this on the same page as this thread! Have a look at that. Personally I rate Cubana and don't like Platillos or La Mancha.
LJB23 05-08-2008, 05:09 PM La Tasca is a bit hit and miss. Went to a birthday party there are there were about 16 of us and the food was nice. But just me and my partner went and it was rubbish. Cold food and warm wine. This was the meadowhall one.
