There is probably a thread about a crash at said crossroads last night. I reported it at 16:30, the accident happened after 19:00. Bad as well.

Again, the lights are off tonight, and have been for at least 3 hours, and guess what, another crash right now.

It's a busy crossroads with traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.

This happens at least once a month. A casualty is only a matter of time.

Ridiculous.

Apologies, my first post was misinformed. It seems there was also a crash at 16:00 today at the same crossroads. I was at work and have just been told about it.

That is 3 crashes at the same traffic lights in less than 24 hours due to their failure. And it's not an unexpected failure, this happens all the time.

Sorry to rant, but I have complained about this for months, and it seems now people are being taken to hospital with collapsed lungs, roads closed etc, that things are still the same a few hours later.

I will bet you anything, they are again patched up, and they go down again within a fortnight.

So what does this say about some people's theory that there are too many sets of traffic signals and they should be removed?

I'll have to differ with you here. People have collisions in these circumstances because one or more of the parties doesn't take the required amount of care.

So who exactly have you complained to and what explanation have you been given regarding the signals being off?

If the signals are off, treat as a give way. It's not rocket science.

Seems as that's been the case with at least 2 of the 3 crashes, didnt see the one earlier this afternoon but heard the other 2 from a very close proximity. Guess it doesnt that you cant really see round any of the corners either.

So, you drive to the prevailing conditions and exercise the appropriate degree of caution.

The problems at this junction are being caused by an erratic mains supply, we are working with Yorkshire Electricity to try to sort them out.

At this and any other junction where the signals are not working the Highway Code gives some sound advice - You MUST stop behind the white 'Stop' line across your side of the road unless the light is green. ... If the traffic lights are not working, treat the situation as you would an unmarked junction and proceed with great care.

If everyone followed this advice - stop at the stop line then proceed with great care - junctions with signals out would be safe. Unfortunately not everyone does, so the need to take great care (and not assume that anyone else will stop or slow down) is even more important.

If you do see some signals are not working we would appreciate a call to the 24/7 traffic signal fault line 0114 273 6666 - we will respond as soon as possible.

Someone probably got tired of waiting to turn right going up from Washington road as it can take ages because of oncoming traffic...nothing a bit of stagger would not cure

People have collisions in these circumstances because one or more of the parties doesn't take the required amount of care.Exactly... some idiot thought he'd drive through without looking... Same thing happened on Abbeydale Road South/Archer Lane in Millhouses; never saw the road so clear on a Sunday afternoon, everyone was letting one or two cars out of each direction after the other. So, you drive to the prevailing conditions and exercise the appropriate degree of caution.Exactly, traffic lights or not, one should exercise caution.
Whilst the lights were out, did anyone put them plastic signs saying light inactive? These accidents aren't due to absence of lights, it people not paying due care at a junction without lights...Someone probably got tired of waiting to turn right going up from Washington road as it can take ages because of oncoming traffic...nothing a bit of stagger would not cureIt'd certainly diminish the queue going up hill towards Nether Edge... There's always an imbecile who stays at the lights with his indicator... A while cycle wasted.
turning right without arros or lanes means driving behind oncoming vehicles, not in front... Scaredy cats.
