OK, for the last few days I've been off in the car taking the dog to cycle tracks out in the peak (no dogs), now I'm wanting to stay a bit closer to home, as 30-45 mins in the car to get there is not great :( The problem is I don't like him wearing his muzzle (he's on lead) when running next to the bike as I feel it's stopping him panting as well as he should. So I'm in a bit of a dilema, he's not safe if another dog runs up to us without it on and I'd love to do a few laps on the bridlepath in Abbey woods (lots of dogs)..... I'm going to have to have another think about this one.

Anyway, when I ponder that one for a bit has anyone got any other suggested bike paths in or around Sheffield that are wide enough for me and the dog? ( I'm not that wide...you know what I mean:lol: )

Stone lane in Woodhouse, and Shirebrook Valley - and they're relatively dog free

at the very least you can usually spot another dog a mile off

Have you tried a baskerville muzzle Evei? They allow panting and water drinking

I've just got in from the woods took us 2 1/2 hours to get there around a few times and back, did'nt enjoy it much, too many other dogs, the bike acts as a good sheild! We met what looked like a staffy/ beagle cross on the way back that seemed like he was having fun pulling his owner along! D was not too bad at this stage I think he was knackered

Thats the type of muzzle I have but it does not allow his tongue to stick out properly, like he holds it when he runs, a size any bigger and I think he's have it off in his frenzy to get to another dog! He can drink with it on and eat treats but I generally take it off once we are in dog lead teritory:) I will have to look into getting one made for him I think.

I'l have to try them two rides, I think I'm getting lazy not walking!

I'm not sure how close it is to you but the Wharncliffe woods (between Oughtibridge and Stocksbridge) has some pretty wide tracks including the Trans Pennine Trail along the bottom is quite empty and has reasonable line of sight along most tracks. I run my dog on a bike on lead there, mine hates wearing a muzzle and it definely stops him panting properly in this weather. Let me know if you want any more info about it.

I went on the transpenine route on Monday night, but the only entrance I could find was the Dunford Bridge one, so details of Wharncliffe woods entrance would be great :)

What kind of dog do you have? if it's anything like mine he just runs with his mouth wide open and his tongue near his feet

Thanks

hello,

I would recommend parking on Platts Lane, near the Intermet factory:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=platts+lane+sheffield&sll=53.438634,-1.528323&sspn=0.004691,0.009656&ie=UTF8&ll=53.441446,-1.530147&spn=0.018763,0.038624&t=h&z=15
and Plank gate is the TPT.

There is a top car park off the Woodhead road near Grenoside but it tends to get used more by dog walkers, although probably not too many and not normally the irresponsible type either. Theres lots of proper mountain biking in the woods too!

I've got a Sprollie - collie springer cross, he's not very good with other dogs so stays on his lead. I try not to get him too hot but he certainly can't pant properly in a muzzle, there are quite a few streams and puddles in Wharncliffe which is good.

I can recommend a behaviorist as well!

That’s great! I have a behaviourist at the moment, but pm the name and number anyway. It's good to have a recommendation, I think he may need someone who specialises in this area, as the one I have has been very good in general but not too hot with the dog aggression problems.

Gave that track a go today, It was quite hard work going as it seemed all uphill, which is quite hard when you can't get any speed up with the dog, but coming back was nice and easy! (Plus I've only just got back into the bike riding since last summer so my legs are still struggling a little)

I enjoyed that one :) I think I will have to go there again, it was nice and straight like mentioned , so you can see miles ahead and he found some puddles to splash around in....He's loving water now, just got to find some that is sloping gently, clean and deep enough to see what type of swimmer he is.... he's obviously never been in water before I got him, then again looking at his reactions to things on walks I don't think he'd come across much

We got back for 1pm so was out the sun when it eventually made a proper appearance ,caught a few very light showers in the morning, only managed an 1 1/2 hours one way then came back, as it was getting hotter. I'm going to have to order a trans penine cycle route map I think!

Thanks for the suggestion it was great.

glad you had a good ride, some of the other tracks in the woods are quite wide if you go uphill even more from the start.
