Of the one's I've seen live on TV I think I would have to go for Van Basten's against USSR in 1988 European Final.

Thing to remember about it is I had only been watching football for a couple of years or so at the time, so if I saw something similar now I would probably not be so impressed.

I can remember an amazin one Bergkamp scored at a recent international Championship (I can't remember which) but he basically brought down a 50 yard pass with one left foot touch and banged it in the bottom corner with his right. It was also the winning goal in a knockout match againt a really big team. I can't remeber who though (God, I must be getting old!)

I think that one was in that classic match against Argentina in the 1998 world cup. He was on the by line and he brought down the pass with his right foot and stopped the ball going out of play and then hit it with the outside of his right boot into the far corner from an acute angle. It was a great goal and won Holland the match 3-2 I believe.

Oooh so many to choose from!

Favourite premiership goal ever has to be Bergkamps against Newcastle a few seasons ago. He recieved a pass into the area facing away from goal, flicked the ball to his left, dummied the defender and ran around him to his right then chipped it over the oncoming Shay Given. Some say it wasn't intentional but whatever it was, it looked good!

Favourite international goal ever for me is the Van Basten goal in the euro final.

Being a Blades fan we haven't had many great goals to cheer about lately. However, the greatest in recent years had to be Browns scramer against Wednesday, because it was the Derby game it added that bit of extra sweetness to it

One of my favourite goals of the season was Des Walkers great strike for Forest in the play-off semi-final at Bramall Lane. Sheer class.

As for other favourites, take your pick from a number of Matt Le Tissier strikes.

I'd forgotten about that one. Good call.

Zola's goal against ManU in about '98 was a similar sort of thing, a drag back and some more trickery in a packed penalty area and a great shot at the end.

Wasn't quite as skillful, but it was against The Scum, which always counts in a goal's favour!

Another Zola goal I would put in with the greatest goals would be his cheecky backflip from a corner against norwich in the FA or league cup. He ran towards the near post and no one but he knew where it was going, sheer class!

For dramatic effect, Beckham's goal against Greece at Old Trafford.
The match was such a nightmare, but the ending couldn't have been scripted better.

For a similar reason, the Man Utd goals against Bayern in the CL final. I'm not a Man Utd fan, but the drama was brilliant and the look on Kahn's face - quality.

Rivaldo's bicycle kick. Not only unbelievable technique and exeuction but the consequence of it, not to mention it was the final goal of a hattrick!

Ryan Giggs goal in the FA Cup semi against Arsenal

Bergkamp turn's Dabizas and the keeper at Newcastle

Tony Yeboah's against Liverpool

George Weah against Verona, where he virtually goes length of the pitch

Chrissy Waddle's majestic 45-yard chip for Bradford against Everton in the FA Cup in '97... oh to be a City fan at Goodison that day

Class choices  I'd go for those too, but the single-most wonderful goal ever, for a Scot, HAS to be Archie Gemmell's beyond-words fabulous 1978 goal for Scotland against Holland in the World Cup Finals.

That goal meant Scotland won the match 3-2 - we beat Holland who went on to become the overall competition's runners-up that year - while Scotland exited the competition on goal-difference :(

I remember watching the match live (on tv!) with my Mum and Dad and sisters - I can't even begin to describe how I felt as Archie Gemmell made his incredible run. There was nothing left to lose - he had to Go For It. There was just that sense of perfection about the whole thing - it was so beautiful it had to end in a lovely goal. Such perfection could only have one outcome....

Time seemed to stand still - I don't think I dared breathe as I willed Archie on. Then the ball was in the net and we all yelled (even my Mum!) at the same instant! I think the whole of Scotland exploded in the same moment! Incredible.

What a goal.

I'm still not sure how I feel about it having a starring role in the film "Trainspotting", though.....:suspect: :D

Mine has to be when my little boy scored his first goal for Abbey Lane JFC....his Dad was so proud he gave him £20 when we got him home...!

Now he's older we still like to give him a £5 a goal...it makes him try harder too and is always switched on for an opportunity to get a goal and earn some extra pocket money....

I have to say the most tense exciting goal i ahve ever witnessed on tv oir anywhere was Beckhams last minute one against Greece - fantastic strike to lest we forget.

Think my fave goal of all time is probably Bergkamps 98 or 02 world cup goal against Argentina (even better!) that Yodameister speaks of.

Best goal I've witnessed? A newcastle goal against wolves in a friendly two or three seasons ago..

and as for what i thought you originally implied, whats MY best goal, a classy two touch move to get past the keeper from 7 yards out in Hallams Gym at the city campus, one tuesday morning some moons ago :D

Sheff Wed Vs. Sheff Utd- Wembley Stadium 1991- Chris Waddle, 30 seconds in.. Free kick.

The Owls went on to win 2 - 1.

:)

EDIT: Someone has already pointed this goal out, with a different date.. I can't remember if it was 91 or 93! Either way, I was there!

One of the best goals I've ever seen was a goal Terry McDermott scored for Liverpool against Tottenham. It was the last goal of a 7-0 romp, and is just breathtakingly simple.

Trying to find a clip of it on line but having no joy.

Here is a description of the goal.

N

Liverpool sent out a clear message to the rest of the 1st division with a hammering of a Spurs side that contained two players who had been World Cup winners just two months earlier. The victory, the biggest in the league since the 2nd World War, was the high point of a season when Liverpool created superlative after superlative.......
........The final goal was an all time Anfield classic. Spurs showed their naivety by sending everyone up for a corner with 15 minutes left, despite their predicament. The ball was cleared by Ray Kennedy to Dalglish and passed to Johnson, who sent Heighway clear on the left wing. His cross into the middle was headed into the net by McDermott, who had began the move by defending the far post and ran the length of the field in fourteen seconds.

On the day United opened the "new stand", playing against Suderland.

Gilbert Reece, yeah as long ago as that, picked up the ball by the corner flag in front of the Kop, crazy dribble past about half a dozen defenders, rode over sliding tackles, studs showing as was usual in those days and stuck it in the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Brilliant goal.
United won 2-1.

Just to make it a perfect day, think Wednesday lost.

i watched the ball over my shoulder and volleyed it first time through the keepers legs...oh right! rooneys volley this season against boro in the cup i think was better than the one he scored against newcastle more recently as the boro one was just sheer technique and showed how much he knows the game of football.

I cannot remember the date but it was one by Dean Saunders when he played for Villa, scored at Villa Park.

Very spectacular.

I'm not even going to mention Terry Curran's effort at Bramall Lane!

I loved Ronaldinhos goal against Chelski in the Champs league. Were there didnt seem to be any room for him to hit the nall. next thing you know its in the back of the net.

And also George Weahs goal for AC MIlan (not sure against who) where he took the ball from defence ran past everyone and scored.

Samew goes for Dalian Atkinson for Aston Villa who done a similar goal, cant remember who against again.

Im gunna say Chris Waddles for SWFC vs SUFC.
Simply brilliant, from that angle and that far out.

Everyone was complaining that he had shot from there !!! until it scorched into the corner.

This was a great strike but the somewhat sloppy defending just outside the box takes the shine off it for me. There were 2 defenders on him and they stood off and gave him too much time to place that shot.

Yes, one of my favourites also. It was against Verona I believe.

Atkinson scored a few good goals during his career. The thing I always remember most was him doing all the hard work, taking the ball past numerous players and then trying to do that little bit too much and failing to score.

Good choice, I was there when he scored, it was a stunning goal. Only he could have tried that and only he could have finished it so well.

Another good goal would have to be the Beckham one from the halfway line, the vision and precision in that shot was awesome.
