Well I'd just taken delivery of my carpet cleaner and spent the morning doing the downstairs carpets, they are now the cream/ beige like they should be!

I can't believe how much dirt the dog must bring in with him despite me making him stay in the Kitchen and Utility until I can brush the mud off! I only did them six months ago. I decided to buy one as it was costing £20 to rent a rug doctor for 24 hours so if I do the carpets ever 4 months it will pay for itself in 2 years and it has a 5 year guarantee to I should be quid’s in :) works as well as the professional one too.

I'd recommend it to anyone who is thinking of buying one, it's a vax pets one XL and was a bargain reduced from £240 to £120 this week on their website. Though it's very heavy I think I have extra muscle in my right arm now!

does it have a model number.. like V-028. I have just been looking at some vax cleaners and it is nice to hear that they are worth having!

Give your arm a good rest now!

I had to laugh when I saw the thread title- clean carpets and dogs - in the same sentence! Is there such a thing?

Glad you've got temporary pristine flooring evie - I've got a Vax one too but I don't have too many carpets now so it doesnt get dragged out of the cellar too often- only the stair carpet, an attic rug I can bung in the washer whenever it gets grubby, a wonderful cow-hide one in the living room that is absolutely brilliant to clean - oh and the black and white wool one which is a total swine but I can't bear to part with it- currently consigned to the kitchen and one I seem to spend forever either hoovering or steaming.

It's a Vax 027P pet rapide XL (bit of a mouth full!) I could'nt find them cheaper anywhere else than on the vax site as that included delivery charge as well.

Oh that sounds pretty cool, I think eventually when I redecorate the dining room and Kitchen I will knock them through and have a completely tiled floor with underfloor heating, much easier to look after! But I do like my carpet in the front room, I could not bear to have a wood floor in there. Upstairs is fine as he's not allowed up there!

I will have to train him to wipe his paws on the way in!

When we first got it I thought I would be forever cleaning it, but it is so easy to either sweep, hoover, steam or wipe with a damp cloth - thanks to its almost flat pile. I was a bit twitchy because they are supposed to be dry clean only, but this one's been down since the kittens arrived in October and it's still looking good - Best thing I ever bought for the floor, it tolerates being trodden on by the clumsy dobermutt, puked on by furball- coughing cats and having bits of dog chew slobbered all over it- and it doesnt harbour dust or doggy odours

can I ask where you got it from? and the price...it sounds expensive :) ( the cow rug)

I'm looking for a rug for the conservatory to use in winter and something like that would be ideal, try to make it a bit more modern looking! There was a nice rug in the pier that I nearly got in the sales, luckily I did'nt get it as when I got back and measured it would have been too big.

We have the Vax Dual V andt is fabulous it never fails to amaze me how much it picks up.
I was of the same opinion evei about a rug doctor and having an older dog who is getting a little erm incontinent i definatley need it.
My only complaint is the shampoo is quite expensive but it is a little cheaper on ebay.

a couple of things to bear in mind wrt carpets and dogs...

a cotton door mat which can be machine washed helps absorb mud on the way in, but keeping paw hair trimmed to a minimum (we use a nose hair trimmer on Brude) will help leave most of the muck outside in the first place! We also have an old cotton bathmat as a secondary doormat when the weather's really wet

Vaxing puts detergent into the carpet, and the job of detergent is to trap muck, so always do a rinse afterwards to help your carpets stay cleaner for longer after a Vax day! Some customers reported they use Stardrops or 1001 carpet and upholstery cleaner as a cheaper alternative to the genuine Vax liquid

I'm a fan of steaming myself

It has a rinse option as the soap is not mixed in with the water so hopefully no sticky detergent on the floor, I made that mistake once before and ended up with a really mucky carpet :)

I've never heard of trimming paw hair I bet D would be really ticklish , he's pretty short haired but he always manages to get mud all up his tummy even though he is pretty long legged. I had a steamer but its cheap one and pretty rubbish on carpet but ok for cleaning tiles and hard stuff.

Brude's paws are ticklish, but he's had to get used to it ;)

Great universal online and it was reduced - £125 for the largest size (no way would I have paid the original price - £250), but I think they only have the pale brown ones in stock at the moment - worth checking the website and maybe Littlewoods too. The one I really wanted was the zebra print, but it hadnt been reduced. The one I got was meant to have more black in it too- if you went by the photo on their online catalogue... Here is is covered in norwegian forest cats http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/CharlieAshiachillOut.jpg

Having said that. I've fallen out with GUS and maybe shouldnt be giving them any kind of reccomendation until they stop playing silly b*ggers.

Oh and Ailsa being a short haired beastie doesnt have an awful lot of paw hair but she still manages to drag all manner of cr*p indoors and somehow, that short spiky hair gets EVERYWHERE.
