View Full Version : My display is really dark when looking at photos
Can anybody help me. When i view photos taken from my digital camera...in fact any digital camera, they are very dark on my screen and i've got to lighten them individually to be able to see them. I have my monitor turned up to full brightness so its not that. Also the photos are fine on other peoples computers.
Can anyone suggest what it could be and give me simple (i'm not all that great with computers) step by step instructions on what to do to put it right. Thanks!

If your photos are fine on other computers I don't know what to suggest. How bright is bright on your computer?
What does This (http://www.PhotoShare.co.nz/PhotoShareGallery1/100193/104931/IMG_30136140.JPG) look like on your computer ?Canon A80 straight from camera.
I could see what the photo was of, but still very dark
Brightness & contrast on the monitor could be set wrong?
Failing that, goto Control Panel and select Display. Then goto Settings, then Advanced. There may be a tab for adjusting the coloUr where you are able to mess with the gamma settings etc.

Try calibrating your monitor, it is quite a bright photo with a range of colours and contrasts.
sscsux thanks! However when i adjust it so i can see my photos, the rest of my windows are far too bright to look at!!
Any other ideas??
Matsalleh how do i calibrate my monitor...sorry i'm hopeless with computers!!?
It could be that your screen resolution is set too low for the size of your monitor....I found with TFT monitors the highter the resolution the better, including setting the dpi high as well.
Otherwise, it sounds like you need to adjust your contrast.
I had this problem with some pics I took last year at the end of the Great River Race in East London....because I was taking my pics facing approximately south-west, and the sun was setting in the west, all the pics came out dark, and I had to use Photoshop or something similar to make them brighter.

It is just a means of adjusting your monitor to show a range of colours, sounds like you have already done that if your windows are too bright. If you can put your windows back to the colours that you think are right,do that. You should have some buttons (usually on the front of your monitor) which allow you to adjust position, brightness, contrast of your monitor. It is now probably a camera (or operator) fault. What sort of camera is it?How do you set the exposure etc ?
Annx...what setting dpi should i be trying? what resolution?
Its not my camera as my photos are fine on other computers, and other people photos are still dark on my screen.

Try this :-

slw2201, you will have to experiment, which is what I did....it depends on the size and type of monitor you have.
