Hi all,

I know many of you will be interested in this.

We will be starting up regular 'classic' days of digitally restored/remastered films soon at Cineworld. Looking likely to be run on Monday, at least once per month. We will know more details soon, and I wil endeavour to let you all know as soon as I can. All we know so far is that we have The Abba Movie in a couple of weeks, and Grease is booked in for September. I'm harrasssing our booking department to get info on the other planned films, and really hope for some true classics.

It could be a good excuse for making occasional Film Meets for the Tuesdays, catching an old great instead of a new release (I'm making sure I'm available for Grease when that comes on....I love that film)

Alien would be a good one to see on the big screen.

I wholeheartedly agree. Managed to catch a classic screening of it a few years back (and the directors cut screening). Loved it.

Fantastic. Grease was one of the first more adult movies i'd seen at the cinema and the girl who sat next to me talked all the way through it so i'd like to see it again... despite the fact i've watched it on video/tv a million times!
Will these be an eclectic bag or picked for popularity/visual effects? I fancy some Hitchcock on the big screen.

Apparantly we are expecting what was descirbed by our film booker as "real classics" (ie not recent blockbusters, but older films digitally restored. If you think back to last years Summer of Films season we ran, then that should convey the idea well)

Looking forward to watching one of these when they're on! You'll have to let us know when they're showing nearer the time :)

Nice evening out, something to eat, drink, then an old classic film at the cinema! Sounds like a nice evening out!

Will this be the same as the frijji festival that's taken place in the london cineworld? That's been free tickets hasn't it?

No, it will be an ongoing and regular thing - confirmed that it will be on Mondays (which means I get chance to watch them myself after I finish work for the day :) )

When you say digitally restored do you mean brand new 35mm prints, or do you have the new digital cinema projection equipment?

I mean we are showing the restored versions in digital format on our digi projectors. One of the blessings of digital is that old films can be built up from the best remaining prints available, and then stored digitally for use over and over again. Apparantly the company we are using to supply the films has quite an extensive library of films on digi now.

The first official 'Classic Gold' (as they are calling them) is Grease (celebrating the 30th Anniversay of the films release) on 24th September. It is now on the system for buying tickets if anyone is planning on going.

What is the projector, I am very interested in projection technology. Christie, Barco, NEC? Seen the Christe CP2000-M DLP in operation and its totally stunning....blows 35mm out of the picture completely

very nice indeed.....I strongly recommend anyone who has not experienced digital cinema to give yourselves the experience. This wont be like a trip to the local fleapit I assure you!!!

Modern digital video projectors are light years away from those clunky old ceiling mounted dustbins you still find in pubs.....plus modern digital cinema can beat ANY 35mm print screening. I have seen them working in sync in a twin screen test auditorium using brand new 35mm print verses a digital screening, and the actual film print falls far behind......I am sure Beakerzoid will agree with me on the superb quality of the Christie, used in cinemas around the world and really THE market leader....

Beakerzoid, do you happen to know which other venues in Sheffield have gone digtal recently? or are all the rest still on rattly old Victoria 5 film projectors and rack system.....

Not sure on other digis in Sheffield. We have 2 units, one in screen 17 and the other in 20. The one for screen 17 has been set up for the Real-D 3D, which means we play 3D movies too. We also have them both set up for sattelite relay, which means we can show events such as live interviews (which we have done on a couple of special screenings over the past year) and Opera (which we ran last year and are doing again this year - live from The Met for £15 per ticket).

We have also been informed that over the coming year or so we will be getting 9 more units, with the plan for our larger screens to have them.

As for quality - the picture quality is stunning, and the sound is crisp and clear throughout. Effects driven blockbusters seem to get digi releases a lot more now, and last year Pirates of the Caribbean 3 looked amazing in digital (as did Ratatouille and Cars). Once we get more units I forsee a lot more of our films being presented in digital.

certainly worth the investment. Its a bit of a comedown after watching a digital cinema presentation and then going back to watching a flickery old 24 frames per second 35mm presentation with frame judder and gate weave and 'jump cut splices'......

I guess it saves so much time .....projectionists used to spend hours making up films for the platter system and then breaking them down again and adding all the trailors and ads, etc....on digital, its all done by computer input...no more man handling heavy spools of film and listening to those clattery projectors.....

It might be scary thought but there are test 10 digital screen cinemas in the US being run with zero staff beyond reception area, the whole presentation process being totally automated and run remotely from a central distribution office some 600 miles away...a few mouse clicks done remotely and all the screen times and film titles can be changed instantly....is this the future?

The latest digital equipment is largely self maintaining...staff are only required to change lamps and carry out occasional servicing.

Update - After the inital word that the plan was to roll out to all sites, Head Office have made the decision to trial the new digital classics at the sites who already did the Monday Classics before considering rolling out across the circuit - so in Sheffield we will not be showing them from the start.

I will check to see if Chesterfield are involved in them, and if so will confirm the screenings for y'all. I do know that It's A Wonderful Life is booked in for one of the classics in the run up to Christmas...so that'll be me travelling to another site to see that :)

Scary, and also a shame, takes the fun out of things sometimes. It was a disappointment at uni when we moved from svhs to dv, editing wasn't near as fun.

What a shame... never mind Beakerzoid - tell them you've got a Sheffield film group gagging to come and see them!

I am trying to convince them that we have an audience - after all when we did the Summer of Films thing last year we sold out nearly all of the classics then (Goldfinger especially).
