just putting a computer together for my parents...and the amd processor chip wont slot into place...this is not a problem i had even considered wud crop up.

when i put it in place 3 of the four corners slot in...but one wont.?? being so fragile i dont fancy tryin to force it in.

any1 had a problem like this? im not sure if there is a fault with the chip or the motherboard or its just me missing something simple.

both chip and motherboard are brand new.

opinions welcome.....and needed!

They are designed to only fit one way and when you have it right they should drop straight in - though your motherboard manual may lie! I've just built a socket 939 AMD machine and the motherboard manual was trying to get me to install the chip backwards :o

Oh and they also come in two (at least) different socket types - I'm assuming you have the same socket chip and motherboard?

Id guess youve either bought the wrong cpu type for the socket on the motherboard, or youve got a bent pin somewhere, or youve forgot to lift the socket lever up first.

i have tried it everyway round..and matched up the pins so each one corresponds to a hole...ive lifted the lever...and the motherboard and chip are pretty much same as i have in my own computer..thats why its so confusing. i purposly bought things so i wouldnt have compatabily problems. :( hmph.

im no techie...maybe there is some compatablity thing ive missed? if any1 has any ideas let me know. its odd that it fits in 3 corners and its just 1 that doesnt go in.

Check to see all your pins are straight and clean...

And check that theres nothing in the holes in the socket. Lift the lever, turn the board upside down and give it a shake, see if anything falls out.

done all the above :(

i will try to get a few people i know to suggest things or have a look. grrrrr pain!!

everything is ready!! and this bit shud be the easiest!!

thats the problem with putting computers together...finding out if youve done something wrong or if its something that is faulty.

i mite have to take my own computer apart and use bits from it to do a bit of trial and error (which i REALLY dont want to do)

thanks for the replies...any1 with any more ideas please let me know

You will most definately have a bent pint somewhere, remember they only have to be a gnats out of line.

sometimes it is also possible to lift the lever a bit too far try lifting it just short of the vertical

Excellent advice above. they fit only one way and its obvious by looking and the corner pins.

Sounds like a bent pin.

Take the motherboard out and fit the processor whilst outside the case. It should literally drop into the slot with the lever up. If its outside the case you can see where its not going into the slot.

Contact ebuyer and tell them they have sent you a dud.

It does sound like a bent pin but when you said you have rotated the processor and tried to fit it to the socket - and it's not going in at one side .....is it always the same side of the processor (indicating a bent pin) or is it the same side of the socket itself (would indicate an obstruction in one of the holes of the actual socket).

The alignment problem could be with the socket itself and not the actual processor. The reason I say this is I know a guy that used to put clear glue in some of the holes for reason I won't go into on this forum, lol. I hope you never bought your mother board from him :o
