What do people think about this, and could the same argument be made for Yorkshire Pudding?

I'm not a Sheffield foodie, but I do like nice food. And I just have to say, the ones I've bought in the shop's up north are nothing like the lovely real ones I'yve tryed, from the other siyde of the meadow.

Dead nice.

Not really, seeing as Yorkshire Pudding originates from France. I don't see why a Cornish Pasty shouln't be AC. It is specific to an area of the country.

I think it is a good idea. So many other countries have taken this action to protect their products and their producers income. That is why champagne can only be made in Champagne and the rest has to be sprakling pinot noir / chardonay, and parma ham is from the parma region of italy.

It is about time we did something about it as I think it is appaling that the largest commercial producers of Cheddar cheese are NZ and Canada. We should protect our herritage and our food producers.

I can't help thinking it is all a bit silly. These other producers are not going to stop making it, they'll just call it something else. People won't stop buying it and pay for real British cheddar which'll probably cost an arm and a leg to import (to places like NZ etc) if they're used to the cheese they've bought all along anyway? Are we going to do the same with 'sandwich'? :hihi: And is Italy goint to 'copyright' pizza?

Some people want to buy a cheddar and pickle sandwich so under appelation controlle rules (if it were brought in for cheddar)the company that wanted to market it as cheddar would have to buy authentic cheddar, or just call it cheese and pickle. People know and trust the flavour of cheeses such as cheddar, red leicester etc. It is actually the case that it is often cheaper for manufacturers to buy NZ cheddar and import it to the Uk than buy UK cheddar.

Under labelling regs there are guidellines laid out on what you can and cannot call things for example a black forrest gateaux must contain the required ingredients and a farmhouse loaf is the given shape. Appelation is for things from a given region and the sandwich is named after a person and pizza is typical of all parts of Italy.

I think if the rest of Europe do it successfully we should do it. Basically they can charge higher prices for the appelation controlle stuff and protect the identity of their products, the 'copies' are often slightly cheaper but often as good if not better quality. Whereas we basically allow anyone to make our traditional products and many people are often not even aware that their Mature Cheddar has been made in NZ or Canada.

We are the same with everthing that we allow our own industries and producers to be undermined and 'sold out' to cheaper foreign producers.
