View Full Version : Which job first? wiring, plastering, laminate flooring?
My new home needs re wiring, the walls plastering, central heating installed and I would like some laminate flooring laid. I dont know what job should be done in what order. I really would appreciate some advice as to where to start.

Central heating first, Then re-wire, Plaster, then lammy floor
Magneteer 23-04-2005, 17:18 Don't forget your central heating will need wiring up (to the new wiring). Also you will need to chase out some walls to run cable, some of which may finish up behind a radiator, so I would do the rewire first followed by the heating, then plaster, then flooring.
muddycoffee 23-04-2005, 17:47 I would also have the rewire first. Because it will potentially cause much mess to the walls where new channels may have to be chased out under the plaster. Also for safety's sake it is potentially the most pressing job.
Then I would tackle the heating, which will make further mess to some of your walls, and floors, where many floorboards will have to be ripped up. Another reason for leaving this to second is it's coming up to summer and you will need it less.
If you can get both these jobs done together, the electricians and plumbers can usually work around each other and use the same raised floorboards, which saves time and effort.
Then when the heating is settled down and not leaking or anything, and all your floors have been patched up, you can scree any concrete floors for laminate, and hardboard over floorboards ready for the laminate.

Only if they're really uneven ;)
I'd do wiring, heating, plastering and laminate in that order, but agree with Muddy about seeing if you can get both done together.
For best results, ask one to recommend the other - if they're mates they're less likely to complain about being in each other's way ;)
Hi
These guys work together and i recommend them both, just in case your looking for good tradesmen. They could do your re-wire and heating
Hope this may help

Sorry to spoil the party but i'd tend to do the plastering before the heating as you will need a good wall to hang the radiators on so: rewire, plastering, heating and flooring. Good luck!
Yes but you do the heating first and put all your pipes in etc, then plaster, then hang your rads  If you dont put your pipes in and plaster first, you then have to chop out and re-plaster

My husband is a plasterer.
He agrees with this one!First fix the plumbing, then the radiators, then plastering.
Finally , the flooring
Good Luck. When you have done all that, take a holiday!
Agent Gypo 24-04-2005, 09:18 Get your wiring and plumbing done first, then your plastering, then your floor.
It's best to get the messy jobs out of the way first.

Sorry but still stand by what i said as the pipes should never go in the wall - this is asking for trouble, nails etc. Instead they can be boxed in after so it is obvious where thay are, mostly this will not apply as they will go under the floor, but where they need to go upstairs this can be done in a cellarhead or through a cupboard where thay will not be seen. AND is it easier to install the radiators first and then run the pipes up to them as very hard to get the pipes right without... Maybe I'm getting a little pedantic now?
Thanks for all the replys, they,ve been real helpful. Im a woman on my own who has no idea about this kind of stuff and I thought I was asking a ridiculous question and that everyone reading my question would think I was lacking in common sense! Thanks again.
