laptop info screen gone off
started with it coming on/off and tapping casing and would come back on,but when it went out you could see display faint as if the light/invertor had gone out?
but now no display?works fine on a monitor
any info please, its a i-friend laptop 2gig p4,not a high gloss or widescreen laptop ,standard,
been told its flex cable?is flex cable the one that has foil around it and connects to back of screen ?
any help or info advice welcome
thank you
Sounds like a loose connection of the inverter cable as you say - or it may be that the inverter has given up the ghost entirely and needs replacing (unlikely given your symptoms).
Have you had the screen apart yet to be able to access the cable? You will usually find the inverter in a plastic sleeve placed around the edge of the screen (top or bottom normally) - and this will have a small plug connecting to the main body of the laptop. It's possible the wire to it could be wrapped in foil but doesn't have to be (although there is normally some kind of shrouding for protection).
The only other possibility is that the backlighting in the screen has gone but I would be inclined to go down the inverter route first.
Has the laptop been dropped at any time?

hi,not been dropped screen just getting worse ,started with screen going off so would give it a little tap and was back on ,but when it went u could see the faint display etc but now can not see the faint display?
yes just stripped screen down to wires etc,can see small sleeve at base of screen bit but not lighting up when powerd up?tried wiggling wires etc to no joy flicker etc
can supply pics if it will help?
Does the small strip not lighting up look like a light filament or a small circuit board?
More likely to be the inverter then - it'll not flicker or light up as all that does is regulates the power supply to the backlight(s) in the LCD screen.
Only way really to test would be to replace and see if it makes a difference I'm afraid.

the fact that you could see the dim display without the backlight on but now cannot see anything pretty much rules out the inverter so it is most likely the display cable, i'm assuming that there is only the one cable that connects to both the inverter and lcd panel?
it could also but unlikely be the suspend switch , try giving that a tap or 2 while the laptop is on but not connected to an external monitor and see if anything happens
and yes pics please
ah, apologies! I hadn't realised you can no longer see the faint display. In which case yes there is a chance it could be the cable connection from the base of the unit to the screen. As pixellated says, unlikey the inverter given that information.
Not sure about the suspend switch though - the laptop would not output via the vga connection if it was in suspend?
