Is there anything else in the error message? Vxd is usually something to do with a device driver, post more details and we can probably figure out which driver is knackered so you can reinstall it

the error message should say which bit of windows, application is missing the file
if its an application, reinstall it.
if its part of windows then youll either have to use the repair option on the xp cd or reinstall xp over itself to get the missing device driver back

I thought .vxd files dated back to Windows 9x, in which case they shouldn't be required for Windows XP to run.

I suspect that an older app designed for Win 9x was installed and / or removed, and is causing this error message.

redwood - does Windows XP still boot up regardless of the error message? If so, this may be the case.

We will need definitely more info though, such as the full filename and path of the .vxd file, and any programs you've recently installed / removed.

Just the full filename would be enough to locate which app was causing this.
