If Microsoft themselves fdon't know when it's out I doubt anywhere else will.

It'll be out when it's out is all I can say atm.

Even if MS did publish the release date on their site, it's probably be made up anyway. I've already heard of several release dates, as Rich says, it'll be here when it's here.

I'd expect it to be available several years later than Microsoft's promised delivery date.

Wasn't Windows 2000 (known at the time as NT5) 5 years late?

Longhorn expected 2005 (http://www.computerworld.com/softwaretopics/os/story/0,10801,70381,00.html) - article dated 2002

Microsoft: Longhorn to arrive in 2005 (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-1000281.html) - article dated 2003

Gates points to 2006 Longhorn release (http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/03/29/HNgateshorn_1.html) - article dated 2004

I see a pattern developing :D

Longhorn hasn't even been handed out to their beta testers yet so i doubt we'll be seeing it this year. If i had to guess (well Microsoft do!) i'd say late 2006/early 2007.

I thought Longhorn was supposed to be 64-bit but i read this week that it will now be 32-bit compatible too :)

Also...
IE7 will probably be later this year. Due to Firefox's increasing demand, Microsoft have not only changed it's mind about bringing out a new browser but they have brought the release date forward too.

The betas are around know, theyve been kicking around on various P2P networks and newsgroups for a while. Theyre just not very good.

I'd be inclined to agree on this time scale for the release of LH. More due to the source code being leaked last year (M$'ll have to change bits of their code to make the released sorce invalid/erroneous).

Don't give a .... about whether they release IE7 or not (it'll still not be standards compliant, and still need a SP to fix bugs/vulnerabilities/exploits etc).:D

Releasing IE7 is too little, too late from Microsoft. Mozilla are releasing better versions of Firefox every few months now (i'm currently using version 1.0.4).

Maybe this time Microsoft wont win the war?

I thought the latest version was 1.0.3?

Unlikely. Micro$oft will probably cripple Longhorn so it won't work with Mozilla

Firefox 1.0.4 (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-aviary1.0.1/) beta

Then someone will crack Longhorn within an hour (like they do with anything Microsoft) and we'll be back to normal proceedings ;)

I've had the Longhorn beta for ages, never installed it though hehe. I think there are sites with screen shots and other information knocking about.

That is interesting; optimised for an AMD CPU.

I thought the Wintel Mafia would never split

(Wintel = Microsoft Windows + Intel)

Just found out that all the programmers have had to basically bin Longhorn and go back to the drawing board.

There are rumours of a new beta version being ready by June, although i can't see it somehow.
