Buy a Racing Post, spend an hour browsing through the stats for the course and the Signposts page, see if you can spot any interesting trends and what-not. It's far more fun that way than just lumping on a horse because somebody told you to.

Other Information Before horse racing begins horsepower will be replaced by manpower as jockeys take each other on the inaugural Sky Bet Jockeys' Dash, a 100 yard sprint on the Knavesmire. It will give racegoers the unique opportunity to see some of their favourite jockeys thundering across the turf as they battle it out to find out who is the fastest in the weighing room. Apart from bragging rights over the rest of the field, the winning jockey will receive £500 courtesy of Sky Bet, who will also give £200 to the runner-up and £100 to third home. Sky Bet will also give a donation to charity for every jockey that takes part, ranging from £50 for every apprentice to £500 for every current or former champion jockey that participates.
As part of the Music Showcase Weekend tribute act 'Killer Queen' will be performing, back by popular demand." - BHA.

OK then, here are my selections, and the forecast price from the Racing Post.

2.10 - Titus Andronicus (8/1)

Traditionally, the tip in the nursery was to back the top weight, but aside from the fact that there are joint top weights, Mazzola looks to be weighted on one reasonable run in the Woodcote, and Spring Tale's run in the Super Sprint may also give him too much weight. Anglezarke's comeback run after a lay off over 6f was quite eyecatching, and the return to 5f will suit, but I'm going for TITUS ANDRONICUS further down the weights.

He ran pretty well on his handicap bow at Haydock behind La Brigitte (reopposes tomorrow), has been consistent, and this easier track may well suit better.

2.40 - Crystal Capella (4/1)

A few of these would like the ground to ease, and I'm surprised that She's Our Lass is down to run on ground which won't suit when she's in foal. Boucheron hacked up in a 1m4f maiden at Pontefract, so this much less demanding track and drop in distance may not be the trick. Really Ransom's last win was in blinkers for John Oxx in Ireland, and they're left off here.

La Sarrazine is interesting upped in trip after easily winning a heavy ground maiden at Ripon (only raced on good to soft, or softer on turf), and carries bottom weight, but CRYSTAL CAPELLA has no worries about the ground or trip, and her run at Nottingham, previous to her odds-on win at Newcastle, has thrown up several winners.

3.10 - Campanologist (3/1)

The big race of the day, but may cut up a bit, as Many Volumes is already a non-runner, and Stage Gift and Multidimensional will only run if the ground is suitable. If Stage Gift takes his place, then we could have a sneaky Godolphin second string going in ...... but I fancy a canny ride from Frankie might get CAMPANOLOGIST up to reverse the form with Pipedreamer.

He was never going to get his own way up front in the Eclipse (where I backed the second ...... grrrr), but on this galloping track, Frankie could dictate matters from the front. Blythe Knight is a hero, but this looks beyond him. Tajaaweed reportedly wasn't ready for the Derby, and may be better than his performance there.

3.45 - Harrison George (8/1)

Typically hot handicap, with the weights headed by a Group 1 entered horse, and loads in with chances. Knot In Wood has to be respected in this sort of race, and has recent form with several of the runners, and it's entirely possible that top weight won't stop him here following his Hamilton win. Tombi, Tamagin, Express Wish and (in particular at a nice price) Lesson In Humility all appeal, but HARRISON GEORGE may not have stopped improving, and has a low weight to carry. Not a race to be heavily involved in though.

4.15 Captain Ellis (7/4F)

With the ground seemingly against Olympic Dream and Rossett Rose, and a very modest level of form show by Final Salute, the way looks clear for CAPTAIN ELLIS to get off the mark in this weak maiden.

There are two newcomers from decent yards though, so a little caution should be exercised and the market watched, but of them Cruikadyke doesn't appeal to me on breeding in particular, and Exceptional Art has shown some temperament (withdrawn for not entering the stalls).

I have a feeling that the 7/4 might be optimistic, and the selection could be odds-on, unless there's confidence behind either of the newcomers.

4.50 - Chocolate Caramel (5/2)

Only a small field for the staying handicap, but still reasonably competitive. Whispering Death's tissue price looks big at 8/1, but with no frontrunner, the pace could be slow, and that could set things up for CHOCOLATE CARAMEL to stay on late. The only female in the race (the likely favourite), Four Miracles has been running well too.

5.20 Esoterica (6/1F)

An 18 runner handicap at the end of a meeting is usually a bookie's benefit race, so to tip the fav may be foolhardy, but there you go, I'd prefer Violent Velocity with a better draw. Hiccups has a good draw and should find conditions to his liking. Viva Volta is of interest too, as the headgear is put back on after a poor run in the week, and is drawn well.

Yankee Storm could be a big price as he is pretty unexposed on turf, but ESOTERICA appeals most to me. Very consistent, and although his last win was in a first-time visor, should still run well in his usual blinkers.

For a sentimental bet, Steel City Boy runs as the rag of the field, but really shouldn't win.

So there you go, but just remember that gambling can seriously damage your wallet .....

I've been to York races about six or seven times and have had some good returns.

This, I believe, is down to their superb race cards which are a must.

Get one of these, don't dwell too long but consider distance, going, trainer and jockey.

Failing that, take the mile and a half walk down Bishopthorpe Road and go get wrecked in some of York's fandabidozie boozers. (I did this in 1989. Went 'to the races' with the pub and never even saw a horse....)
