I've just got myself a shiny new AMD 64 processor (running on a Gigabyte board with 1 GB memory, SATA drive and ATI PCI-e graphics card) however I am having problems installing a 64 bit operating system :( I've tried to install the x86_64 versions of both Mandrake (now Mandriva for some reason) and SuSE and in both cases the CD/DVD has run up and initialised, but once the graphical install starts the system locks and you get no response from mouse or keyboard and end up having to reboot :( Has anyone else tried to install / managed to install / found a similar problem and got round it???

I've installed 64 bit Fedora Core 2, & it went on a dream... Didn't even need the SATA drivers (unlike 32 & 64 bit XP)

What SATA chipset are you running?

It's NVRAID, which will at least work on Fedora Core 3, not sure about the others. Feel free to PM if you need any help...

I've installed Fedora so much I can do it in my sleep..

But i've identified that board as being the one for my next machine.

what graphics card have you got in it?

might be worth trying a different card, although you'll need a pci graphics card if you've got an old one lying around. (Assuming that you don't have a spare pci-e graphics card).

The fact that it locks up when it gets graphical could be related to the particular card.
Could also be worth checking that it's not overheating by that point (how long does it take to get to that point?).

I've decided to go with this card here. (http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=3K51&searchphrase=geforce%206600%20pic-e)

I've had a couple of systems do the same with a couple of different setups. Both times it was the SATA/SCSI adaptor not being detected.

Either re-compile your own linux kernel to support NVRAID, or try a version of Linux that supports it.

YAY Fedora installs nicely - the only problem now is that it had just got to the installing bootloader section and my power went so I have now lost my windows partition as the MBR and file allocation tables seem to have been killed :(
