We find out for sure at 11:30 today! foxy027 22-04-2005, 07:50 Ive just heard it on the news that snooker's governing body are to say later today if Sheffield gets the nod over other cities like Liverpool and Leeds to host the championships. From what were being said Sheffield IS likely to hold onto it. Fearful 22-04-2005, 07:53 I heard the players themselves would prefer it to stay here. That's gotta hold some sway surely? scottf 22-04-2005, 08:32 Originally posted by Fearful I heard the players themselves would prefer it to stay here. That's gotta hold some sway surely? no - the players will play wherever they are told- its money thats going to make this decision!!! tosh13 22-04-2005, 08:47 Well O'Sullivan does not like Sheffield,I think he would prefer the WC be set in London,as he said the other night he would not have been bothered if he had lost, well that say's it all.I was changing my views on him thought he was growing up.I think Sheffield is the best place for the WC it is like Wembley an institution & good luck to Paul Hunter. He must like Sheffield to a certain degree as he's good friends with Naz so i imagine he'll come visit quite regularly. matsalleh 22-04-2005, 10:26 The problem is Sheffield is only a small venue which is no good for greedy sponsors.A 5000 seater venue will be no good for spectators at the back, they will need binoculars to see the table, whereas the Crucible is ideal only 1000 seats I believe. But as has been said money rules. jazz 22-04-2005, 10:31 decison is going to be announced any minute from the winter gardens! uncleheed 22-04-2005, 10:51 It will remain in Sheffield for the next five years.Official Unisol 22-04-2005, 10:51 It's staying!! Yipee!! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/snooker/4354419.stm goose 22-04-2005, 10:51 SNOOKER TO STAY IN SHEFFIELD FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS Great news for Sheffield - will be interesting to see what the 'new venue' will be http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/snooker/4354419.stm ilaria 22-04-2005, 10:53 i am so pleased i love snooker infact im watching it live online at www.bbc.co.uk/sport im watching steve davis v michael holt Captain_Scarlet 22-04-2005, 11:12 Originally posted by uncleheed It will remain in Sheffield for the next five years.Official Excellent ! I don't follow Snooker, but it's a pleasant news ! PoohBear 22-04-2005, 11:14 Thats good news. Ginner 22-04-2005, 11:26 Great news indeed. Only a shame that in the long term it looks like it won't be at the Crucible. As Hendry put it, the Crucible is synonymous with the Championships and with snooker itself. It also gives the commentators free licence to roll out all the old puns about the 'heat/pressure of the crucible'. Still if a new venue with better seating and facilities means it stays in Sheffield then so be it. alchresearch 22-04-2005, 12:00 There were plans for a 'Billardrome' There's a picture here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/snooker/4461533.stm march 22-04-2005, 12:14 That is good news. So does "Sheffield" actually make any money from hosting the snooker? That articles states 2.5m expenditure but I would have thought on top of the positive advert it provides for the city it must make money on it's own? Fudbeer 22-04-2005, 13:37 I agree that events like this have a lot of extra benefits other than the money made by the event itself. It puts Sheffield on the map and presents the city in a positve way tosh13 22-04-2005, 13:44 That is great news, who want's to play in Liverpool or Brum,Sheffield is the only place for the W.C. Minimo 28-04-2009, 08:34 Sheffield has again fought off rival bids from China and others to retain the Championships. Good news for us as it brings in some much needed investment. (From BBC Look North this morning) LukeD 28-04-2009, 09:31 Hopefully, it's the only good thing that Sheffield has. Kaizabella 28-04-2009, 09:34 That is good news. That articles states 2.5m expenditure but I would have thought on top of the positive advert it provides for the city it must make money on it's own? There's all the additional tourism, people coming and staying in the hotels, buying things from our shops, it does wonders for the Sheffield economy for a couple of weeks. This is great news. I'm not a snooker fan, but I'd be gutted if we'd have lost it. Dan_Ashcroft 28-04-2009, 10:30 This charade happens every few years just to keep Sheffield on its toes. There is no serious danger that it will leave for some time to come. Tooeg 28-04-2009, 11:23 Yes I think if I was negotiating on behalf of the snooker world, I would have used China as my other player who is trying to get it. Do you think if Mr Li or Mr Chang or whoever, really wanted it we would stand a chance. Its the same old same old every year, how good the Sheffield leaders are in retaining it. It went to the wire but we won lads. There must be a title that's not been thought of yet for the Chinese to play for. Of course if it ever went to Dubai it would be a million dollars in prize money. Indeed. One day they'll upgrade the Chinese Open to a 'Major' level event (along with the World, UK and Masters); but the world snooker final will leave Sheffield no more than Wimbledon tennis will leave south-west London. nickmunich 28-04-2009, 13:10 That's great news. It is a shame that there are empty seats at every session I have watched so far. Why don't more Sheffielders support it? Dan_Ashcroft 28-04-2009, 13:14 That's great news. It is a shame that there are empty seats at every session I have watched so far. Why don't more Sheffielders support it? Those tickets were sold - all matches always sell out long before the tournament starts. It's just if people buy a 'season ticket' (either personally or as a company) for the tournament, there will inevitably be some sessions they can't make during the event. Generally it is 'prawn sandwich brigade' corporate seats not being used. nickmunich 28-04-2009, 13:18 I went in after the Shaun Murphy match last Wednesday and bought a ticket for the semi final 1 on Friday morning, no problem at all (it wasn't a return). I was talking to an old dear the other day at the snooker and she said they don't do the season tickets anymore, she had to buy tickets for every session. sharpend 28-04-2009, 13:18 I think its only a matter of time before it goes. Apparently snooker bosses had "spoken seriously" to the chinese before bringing it back here. It's only til 2014 so they will start again in a year or 2's time renegotiating olilew 28-04-2009, 15:00 its official, its staying until at least 2014 Tyranna 28-04-2009, 17:02 I agree that events like this have a lot of extra benefits other than the money made by the event itself. It puts Sheffield on the map and presents the city in a positve way Great news about the plans for the Billiardrome. My question is; while its main purpose will be for Snooker/pool tournaments, would it also be suitable for championship matches in other indoor games such as Bridge, Chess, etc? That would mean even more benefits to the local economy.:D noel 28-04-2009, 18:32 that's a good news :) satman2222 28-04-2009, 18:43 Has that "big" chap in the blue shirt on the front row woken up yet? :hihi::hihi: petrolhead 28-04-2009, 19:10 terrific news greaat |
